Leopold Stokowski conducts Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony (2nd mov) at Carnegie Hall, in 1947
Leo was a ROCKSTAR in the Forties. Originally English, he grew his hair into a long white mane and SPURNED the baton (and in doing so, created front-room conductors World-wide, who did likewise, to records!) He worked right up to his death, at 95. If the music sounds familiar - it was mined for the love theme from "Vanishing Point" and Paul Hogan's TV show theme.

Liszt B minor Sonata Pt.1 Barere Rec. 1947
David Dubal,in his book "The Art of the Piano," describes Simon Barere"s 1947 live Carnegie Hall performance of Liszt's monumental and masterly crafted B minor Sonata as "fabulous." I wholeheartedly agree. But I would also add that it is played in the grand Romantic style of a pianist such as Anton Rubinstein, had he ever performed it in public. Performances such as this are anathema to pianists who concider music to be a science rather than an art. Had this been Simon Barere's only recorded performance, it alone would place him in the Parthenon of great pianists.
