Francois Hollande turns down CAR President's plea for help
www.euronews.com The President of the Central African Republic has called on foreign powers to fend off rebels who are quickly seizing territory and closing in on the capital. Speaking to crowds in Bangui, Francois Bozize made a particular plea for help to France, the country's former colonial power. This came a day after dozens of protesters who were angry about the lack of assistance threw rocks at the French embassy in the capital and stole a French flag. French President Francois Hollande has ruled out any such intervention: "If we have a presence, it's not to protect a regime," he said. "It's to protect our nationals and our interests and in no way to intervene in the internal business of a country, in this case the Central African Republic, those days are over." The landlocked nation of around four-and-a-half-million people is roughly the same size as France. Bozize had earlier called on long time Ally Chad for help, who had agreed to send in 2000 troops, but it is unclear if they have all arrived or if they would be capable of halting the rebel advance. The country has seen a number of violent changes of government since gaining independence in 1960. There are around 200 French soldiers in the country but the French Defence Ministry says they are only there to offer technical support and training. Paris is instead encouraging peace talks between the government and the rebels. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

CAR appeals for aid to fight rebels, France refuses
www.euronews.com The Central African Republic (CAR) has called for international help as it struggles to push back rebel forces that now control much of the country. President Francois Bozize has asked for military aid from Washington and Paris. His country was a French colony until 1960 and France has 250 troops stationed there. But French President Francois Hollande says he has no plans to intervene, explaining that his soldiers are in place only to protect French citizens living in the Central African Republic. A rebel coalition, named Seleka, launched its offensive against the government earlier this month. The insurgents now control the north and centre of the country and are edging closer to the capital Bangui. Seleka claims Bozize's government has not stuck to peace deals signed between 2007-2011. The ill-equipped state army has provided little challenge to the rebel forces. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

Chadian Troops Intervene in Rebel Insurgency
Chad has sent troops to the Central African Republic to fight rebels who have seized Bria, a key mining town in a diamond-rich region. The president of the Central African Republic Francois Bozize reportedly asked the neighbouring country for help after his own army failed to repel the attack. The rebel coalition accuses Mr. Bozize of failing to comply with terms of a peace treaty signed in 2007. The Central African Republic has had series of rebellions and coups since independence in 1960.

CAR president 'will share power'
CAR president 'will share power' The chairman of the African Union arrives in Central African Republic to a warm welcome three weeks into an armed rebellion that's swept the nation. Thomas Yayi Boni touched down in Bangui on Sunday for talks with the republic's president Francois Bozize. The meeting appeared to yield results as Bozize announced he was ready to share power with the rebellion leaders. SOUNDBITE: FRANCOIS BOZIZE, CAR PRESIDENT, SAYING (French): "Following this meeting we will surely be able to put in place a national unity government to manage this country which has suffered so much." The alliance of three armed rebels groups has largely swept aside government defences. The rebels accuse Bozize of failing to honour a 2007 deal to pay their members for laying down their arms. Bozize, who was himself swept to power in an uprising nine years ago, is pledging not to stand for re-election in 2016. He also says he's ready for peace talks being organised by regional leaders, without preconditions.
