Welcome to Plagues, Pandemics and Power
Welcome to Plagues Pandemics and Power! I am your instructor. I go by either Prof. Lang or Dr. Lang. I am very happy that you have chosen to join us this semester's course and am using this welcome video to tell you a little bit more about myself and about my availability to you this semester. I was born in Concord Massachusetts and I currently live in western Massachusetts so I am teaching from a very very satellite location across two time zones to you. I received my PhD in medical sociology from Brown University and you may be saying to yourself, "what is medical sociology?" Well I'll tell you; medical sociology is the systematic study of healthcare systems, healthcare bureaucracies, provider-patient interaction, healthcare disparities and the individual experience of sickness, wellness and disease. We will be using concepts from medical sociology this semester in our work together so you will begin to learn more and more about this field as we continue on. You may also be wondering what's on my head. It is a Quaker bonnet. I wear because I am a Quaker. It's a religious observance, something like Jews wearing a yalmuke or some Christians wearing the cross. So this is sort of my cross on my head. I teach because it is the thing I love to do most in the world. I teach this course because I find a field of epidemic disease fascinating and I love sharing this excitement for the field with people. I also look forward to getting to know each of you. I knowledge there are ...

Health And Health Care In Developing Countries: Sociological Perspectives
xxsurl.com Health And Health Care In Developing Countries: Sociological Perspectives In this seminal collection of articles on health care in the Third World, sociological perspectives are applied to medical issues in revealing ways. Fourteen essays (all but two of which are original to this volume) examine the social production of health, disease, and systems of care throughout the developing world. The volume covers a range of areascentral Africa, Nigeria, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, Nepal, China, United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Mexicoand a broad scope of topics, from emergency care, the AIDS epidemic, and women's health care, to public health programs and national health care policies.Contributors address the central question of whether health systems in developing areas should emphasize the role of clinical medicine and individual physicians or community and preventive medical resources. The major health problems faced by these societiesinadequate sanitation, infectious disease, high infant-child mortality, and a lack of family planningindicate the greater need for health educators and public health workers despite many poor nations' desire for Western doctors. Other topics that are examined include the process of seeking medical aid; the relationship between traditional and modern medicines; medical education, hospital care, and communication between doctors and patients in developing countries; and the relevance and application of sociology in Third World settings ...

Occupational Medicine Ethical Concerns in the Early 1900s
a look at ethical issues still faced by occupational medicine professionals. In the early 1900s, doctors who worked for companies were generally regarded with suspicion by both workers and by the medical profession. The original film, Doctor in Industry (1946) produced by the General Motors Corporation is an epic history of industrial medicine in the first half of the 20th century, showing how manufacturers and the medical profession came to terms with one another. It is available for downloading at the Internet Archives.
