Pu'ukohola Heiau
Pu'ukohola Heiau, one of the last major temples built in the Hawaiian Islands, was constructed by Kamehameha the Great from 1790 to 1791. Arguably one of the greatest leaders in Hawaiian History, Kamehameha became the first person to unite the warring islands into the Kingdom of Hawai'i. Puukohola Heiau played a crucial role in the unification of the Hawaiian Islands, for Kamehameha built the temple as a result of a prophecy that came through a priest named Kapoukahi. This kahuna, or priest, told Kamehameha that if he were to build a heiau on the hill known as Pu'ukohola, and dedicate it to his familys war god Kuka'ilimoku, he would be able to conquer all of the islands. www.nps.gov/puhe/ 62-3601 Kawaihae Rd Kamuela, HI 96743-9720 (808) 882-7218

Pu'ukohola Heiau - An ancient Hawaiian Historical site
The stone "Heiau" at Puukohola is one of the last major sacred structures built in Hawaii before outside influences permanently altered Hawaiian life . Constructed in 1790-1791 by Kamehameha 1, this Heiau, or temple, played a crucial role in the ruler's ascendancy. It endures as one of Hawaii's most important historical monuments. By 1790, Kamehameha, whom many believed destined to rule all of the Hawaiian islands, had invaded and conquered Maui, Lanai and Molokai. Yet he was not able to lay full claim to his home island of Hawaii because of opposition from his chief rival and cousin Keoua Kuahuula. While on Molokai, Kamehameha sent his aunt to seek direction from the prophet Kapoukahi, who told her that Kamehameha would conquer all the islands if he build a large "Heiau" dedicated to his family war god Kukilimimoku atop Puukohola, "Hill of the Whale." Evidently, it worked. Kamehameha I became the first ruler to unite the islands under one royal house. The Hawaiians were familiar with human sacrifice. Victims unfortunate enough to encounter the altar known as Hale o Kapuni Heiau, became the subjects of an unusual and elaborate ceremony. The altar is accessible during low tide, but at high tide becomes submergedÖ in shark infested waters, no less. We see the dorsal fins of the blacked tipped reef sharks occasionally, in the water around the old temple site. I get the creeping sensation that there is a residual memory at work in the shark's habits. They were once the ...

'Ahu'ena Heiau Temple in Kailua Village, Big Island Hawaii
Written directed and produced by Donald B. MacGowan; Narrated by Frank Burgess; Original Musical Score by Donald B. MacGowan. Ancient ruins? Human sacrifice? If you are the kind of person who enjoys the excitement of archeology, then this next spot on your tour around the island maybe just what you are looking for. Centuries ago the inhabitants of this region built a series of sacred temples, or heiaus, which were originally used for the purpose of sacrificing human beings to their war god, Kuka'ilimoku. This particular archeological site is called Ahu'ena Heiau, which in Hawaiian means "Hill of Fire". Take a moment to stop here for a look, who knows what you may find. Who knows what spirits you my encounter. In any event, as you take the time to examine the reconstructed grounds of this particular heiau, keep in mind that to this very day these are places of sanctity and solace for many of the native Hawai'ians. As with all such places, remember to respect this setting as well by not removing anything whatsoever from the site. Meanwhile, as you ponder in your minds just what it is you're looking at, consider a little history...

A Royal Battle, A King Sacrificed: Ke'eku, Big Island Hawaii
On the grounds of the Keauhou Beach Hotel are the remains of a heiau that served as both a luakini heiau (place of human sacrifice) and pu'uhonua (place of refuge). Built by the Hawai'ian Ali'i Lonoikamakakahiki in the 16th century, Ke'eku Heiau is one of the most famous religious sites in the State of Hawai'i because of its veneration in folk tales involving the 16th century wars between the Hawai'i and the Maui. The Heiau has walls an impressive 6 to 11 feet thick, and measures 150 by 100 feet in area. There are two stone features on the heiau's raised stone platform said to represent the defeated Maui Ali'i' Kamalalawalu's black and white war dogs, Kapapako and Kauakahiok'oka. Carved into the rock in the inter-tidal region in front of this heiau is an impressive set of ki'i pohaku (petroglyphs). Due to geological subsidence of the island over the past several hundred years, these petroglyphs are visible only at low tide, or by mask and snorkel. There is one large anthropomorphic petroglyph in particular that is said to represent the sacrificed Maui Ali'i, Kamalalawalu. To reach Ke'eku Heiau, park either in the Kahalu'u Beach Park or at Keauhou Ohana Beach Resort. From Kahalu'u, walk onto the Keauhou Ohana Beach Resort property through the gateway in the fence between them and follow the asphalt path to the pool deck, through the lobby of the resort and join the paved path that runs along the end of the Resort driveway. From the Resort parking lot, walk up the drive to ...

Mo'okini Heiau: Warrior Kings and Human Sacrifice on Hawai'i
Narrated by Frank Burgess; Produced by Donnie MacGowan; Brought to you by Tour Guide--Our GPS Tours put Hawaii at your fingertips! Have you ever seen anywhere as stark, impressive, primitive and ancient, yet still able to raise the hackles on your neck? Here, untold thousands of people were sacrificed to worship a new god, the war god Ku. Mo'okini Heiau stands today at the north end of Hawai'i, the well preserved remains of a terrible luakini heiau built by the powerful Tahitian kahuna Pa'ao in the 11th or 12th century. This heiau was the first temple of human sacrifice in Hawai'i and the first site in Hawai'i to be preserved as a National Historic Landmark under the Historic Sites Act of 1935. Mo'okini Heiau is now part of Lapakahi State Historic Park; as Mo'okini is an active Heiau and visitors are reminded to stay away if religious observances are being celebrated. Built on the site of a much smaller heiau, Mo'okini Heiau (lit. "many lineages") is said to have been raised in one night by as many as 15000-20000 men passing stones hand to hand from Pololu Valley, 14 miles distant. Born nearby, Kamehameha the Great was brought to this heiau for his birth rituals. To reach the enormous but especially well-preserved heiau, drive to near the 20-mile marker and turn onto the road to the Upolu Airport, heading left past the airport at about 2 miles. The unpaved section of the next 1.6 miles of road may require 4WD, but at any rate, one must park at the gate and walk 5 minutes ...

PU'U O MAHUKA HEIAU (Hawaiian Temple) HD "Waydes World Hawaii"
"CHILD FRIENDLY" We headed to the North Shore of Oahu today and went to the top of Waimea Valley at Pu'u o Mahuka Heiau (Hawaiian Temple). Just so everyone knows, one of the BEST PLACES to watch BIG WINTER SURF at WAIMEA BAY from the front pillbox in this video. This Temple is the largest on Oahu and covers almost 2 acres. The name is translated as "hill of escape". Undoubtedly, this heiau (temple) played an important role in the social, political, and religious system of Waimea Valley which was a major occupation center of O'ahu in the pre-contact period. This was a place where human sacrifice took place. The Hawaiian themselves stoped human sacrifice in the 1800's. There are plenty of places to venture off to on this short hike around the two acres. Follow the red dirt trail all around the temple. You will be able to hike the Waimea ridge line for some amazing views and picture taking. If in winter watch out for Humpback Whales breaching off Waimea Bay. Bring water and sun block, This hike may be short but there is only small amounts of shade and it is very hot up here. ENJOY and ALOHA!

Hula at Ulupō Heiau Ho'ike 2011
Ulupō Heiau is in our windward town of Kailua on O'ahu. This performance is our part of the Ulupo Heiau Ho'ike held July 23, 2011. The heiau is the platform of stones visible behind the dancers and the tents. For those especially interested in the ka'eke'eke, that number begins about 12 minutes into the performance.

Pulemelei, Samoa's Pyramid/Heiau
This is the largest stone structure in the Pacific. Located on the island of Savaii, it is so ancient that people arent sure what it is anymore. But its bigger than any Heiau in Hawaii and the top is about half a football field in size.

Maka O Hule Heiau, the Stonehenge of the Big Island, Hawaii
Maka O Hule Point: Navigational Heiau at Mahukona Point Near mile marker 15 on the Akoni Pule Highway is a unique navigational heiau of standing stones arranged to point to Tahiti and the other Polynesian islands. Sometimes referred to as "the Stonehenge of Hawaii", this one of a kind temple is reached via a short, easy stroll long the dirt road leading north, away from Mahukona Beach Park on the Kohala Coastline. Lovely vistas along deep, cerulean and clear coves lead to a short scramble up an obvious dirt trail to the heiau. Among the stones, one can sense the reverence and wonder of the Hawaiians as they initiated their novice navigators in this sacred spot of stones pointing along unbroken vistas to Tahiti, the Marquesas and the other Southern Islands. This is a spot for contemplation and awe. Wonderful and startling sunset photos with the stones in the foreground can be taken here, but be respectful and do not walk within the temple precincts. This heiau is most easily accessed from Mahukona Beach Park, although one can also hike down from the makai, or ocean side of the Akoni Pule Highway near mile marker 15.
