There is increasing consensus in the outlook for busying weather activity around the south peninsular coast during next week.
European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts sees a well-marked low-pressure developing off Tamil Nadu coast early in the week.
STORMY SEAS
US National Centres for Environmental Prediction has projected that storm conditions might develop here during this time.
These are likely to resemble the scenario when tropical cyclone Nilam had hit the coast just south of Chennai earlier last week.
The forecast showed a circulation from South Bay of Bengal spinning towards the Tamil Nadu coast around the same area that Nilam made landfall. A couple of other models, however, said that the system might hit Sri Lanka coast first before gliding into the Palk Straits but within earshot of Tamil Nadu coast.
IMD OUTLOOK
Two US Navy models — the Global Forecasting System and Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System — too have put the seas under storm watch.
A leading Asia-based storm tracker too had joined this outlook on Thursday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) projections also points towards some development in the Bay of Bengal, but not officially declared yet.
IMD has said that an easterly wave is expected to hit the Tamil Nadu coast to the accompaniment of rains for the State and adjoining Kerala. Easterly waves have often in the past carried rain-heads upfront that have gone on to develop as low-pressure areas or even storms.
OVERNIGHT RAINS
Meanwhile, a prevailing westerly wave has brought overnight rain to many places over south Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
One or two places over Karnataka have also received showers during the last 24 hours ending Friday morning.
Satellite imagery in the afternoon showed rain-bearing clouds massing up over parts of south Kerala, south Tamil Nadu, South Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. Rain or thundershowers may break out at many places over south Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Lakshadweep on Saturday.
