Luton (i/ˈluːtən/ LOOT-ən,local /ˈluːʔən/) is a large town, borough and unitary authority area of Bedfordshire, England. Luton and its near neighbours, Dunstable and Houghton Regis, form the Luton/Dunstable Urban Area with a population of about 258,000. It is located 20 miles (30 km) east of Aylesbury, 14 miles (20 km) west of Stevenage, 30 miles (50 km) north-northwest of London, and 22 miles (40 km) southeast of Milton Keynes.
Luton is home to League Two team Luton Town Football Club, whose history includes several spells in the top flight of the English league as well as a Football League Cup triumph in 1988. They play at Kenilworth Road stadium, which has been their home since 1905.
London Luton Airport, opened in 1938, is one of England's major airports. During the Second World War it doubled as an RAF base.
The University of Bedfordshire is based in the town.
The Luton Carnival, which has traditionally been held on the Whitsun May bank holiday, is the largest one-day carnival in Europe. It has for the past two years been held on the Sunday instead. In 2012, it was moved to July to coincide with the Olympic Torch Relay and celebrations.
Fort Luton was built between 1876 and 1892 south of Chatham, Medway, South East England. It is one of the five late Victorian land front forts built to defend the overland approaches to Chatham. It is the smallest of the Chatham forts and was built near to the village of Luton.
The fort was ordered under the auspices of the 1859/60 Royal Commission on the Defences of the United Kingdom, but it was deleted by Parliament in an attempt to save money and divert funds to the construction of the sea forts, and the Land Front Forts of Milford Haven, Plymouth, Cork and Portsmouth/ Isle of Wight Fortresses. The 1869 'Report on the Construction Condition and Costs of Fortification' criticised the lack of landward protection for Chatham, yet it was not until 1872 that the Treasury relented and the land was purchased. Even so, it was not until 1876 that the order was given by the War Office, after approval by Parliament for construction to commence. The original design was by William Jervois, but as by 1876 he had been promoted to major general he had no further part in its planning. The work was surveyed and "pegged out" on the ground that same year. In 1877 work on the building started, using convict labour and the light railway to bring up the materials from Borstal Creek jetty.

The third and final part of our footage from this investigation. Fort Luton was built between 1876 and 1892 on a site overlooking the Luton Valley near Chatham. It was the smallest one of five ‘Outer Ring’ forts that were built to defend the landward approaches to Chatham Dockyard. It was built using convict labour with the materials being transported up from a jetty on Borstal Creek via a light railway. Built too late for service it was never armed or manned permanently but was used for siege trials, the last being in 1907. During WWI the fort was used as a transit barracks for troops en-route to Europe and after the war it was used as a store. In 1938 work commenced on converting the fort into a Gun Operations Room (G.O.R.) and in August 1939 it opened as G.O.R. for the 27th AA Brigade ...
