Food Security in Africa: Interview with African Union Chairman and Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika
In this exclusive interview, Farming First's Dr. Lindiwe Majele Sibanda, CEO of the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN), discusses the future of African agriculture and food security with African Union Chairman and Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika.
President Bingu wa Mutharika offers a new vision for Africa, calling on African leaders to recognise that the continent's abundant and rich resources should allow Africans to be able to feed themselves.
He discusses how the agricultural successes of Malawi can be scaled up to achieve Africa-wide food security and eliminate hunger within five years.
President Bingu wa Mutharika proposes six key target principles and resources which should be prioritised to overcome the food challenges in Africa:
• Food Databanks
• Energy
• Infrastructure
• Seed Security
• A framework for future leaders
• Sharing knowledge
To address the impacts of climate change, President Bingu wa Mutharika suggests that by creating green belts, the continent's land and water resources can be more sustainably managed.
