Details:
In 2013 Muñoz travelled to the Ilemi Triangle (disputed land between Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan) where she lived with the Turkana nomads for two months and experienced the complexity of nomadic pastoralist life. While in Turkana Josefina tried to define how we perceive space in the absence of permanent constructions.
Transient [inspired by Turkana] presents a selection of drawings, photography, light boxes, and installation work depicting the notion of impermanence. Through the usage of diverse media and processes, Muñoz explores the idea of private space, ownership, and mobility, highlighting at the same time the splendor of one of Kenya’s most secluded cultures.
The body of work presented in the exhibition was created through Artist in Residence programs in: Kuona Trust (Nairobi, Kenya), Nafasi Art Space (Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania), and Tafaria Foundation (Aberdares, Kenya).
The video features comments by Josefina Muñoz (Chilean mixed media artist), Lydia Gatundu Galavu (Curator of Contemporary Art at Nairobi National Museum), Sylvia Gichia (Director of Kuona Trust Center for Visual Arts in Kenya), and Konrad Paulsen (Ambassador of Chile in Kenya).
Produced by:
A collaborative production between Berea ( www.berea.co.ke ) and Botanika Films ( www.botanikafilms.cl ).
