Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata (FULL) - Piano Sonata No. 14
Facebook page: www.facebook.com The Piano Sonata No. 14 in C♯ minor "Quasi una fantasia", op. 27, No. 2, by Ludwig van Beethoven The sonata has three movements: Adagio sostenuto. Allegretto (click to go at 6:00 min). Presto agitato (click to go at 8:05 min). Adagio sostenuto The first movement, in C♯ minor, is written in an approximate truncated sonata form. The movement opens with an octave in the left hand and a triplet figuration in the right. A melody that Hector Berlioz called a "lamentation", mostly by the right hand, is played against an accompanying ostinato triplet rhythm, simultaneously played by the right hand. The movement is played pianissimo or "very quietly", and the loudest it gets is mezzo forte or "moderately loud". The adagio sostenuto has made a powerful impression on many listeners; for instance, Berlioz said of it that it "is one of those poems that human language does not know how to qualify. The work was very popular in Beethoven's day, to the point of exasperating the composer himself, who remarked to Carl Czerny, "Surely I've written better things. Allegretto The second movement is a relatively conventional scherzo and trio, a moment of relative calm written in D-flat major, the enharmonic equivalent of C♯ major, the more easily-notated parallel major of C♯ minor. Franz Liszt described the second movement as "a flower between two chasms."[citation needed] The slight majority of the movement is in piano, but a handful of sforzandos and forte ...

Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata (animated score, 1st mvt.) piano solo
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) Q:Can I get free sheet music for this piece? A: Yes, you can download the score shown in the video from here: www.musanim.com Q: What do the colors in the bar-graph score mean? A: The colors indicate the "pitch class" of the notes; that is, every C# is a certain color (blue), every E is a certain color (olive green), etc. The piece is in the key of C# minor, so there's lots of blue and green, especially at the beginning and end. The choice of colors is based on the "circle of fifths," which you can read about here: en.wikipedia.org This method of coloring notes is described more here: www.musanim.com Because this form of coloring reflects tonality, the places where the piece moves into another key are easily visible; here's a picture of the whole piece: www.musanim.com BTW, the colors are more distinct in the high-quality version of the video. Q: Who is playing? Who are you? How long have you been playing the piano? A: See this: www.musanim.com Q: I want to learn to play the piano; what advice can you give me? A: I've put some suggestions here: www.musanim.com Q: What did this sheet music look like back in Beethoven's time? A: Here is a facsimile of the first edition, printed in 1802. www.musanim.com Q: What do the light/dark areas in the bar-graph score show? A: They show the effect of the damper pedal. Q: What do the x's in the score mean? A: Those are double-sharps. A sharp goes up one semitone (F to F-sharp) and a double sharp goes up ...

Liszt - Piano Sonata in B minor, S. 178 (1854) [André Laplante]
Piano Sonata in B minor, S. 178 (1854) This is the sonata for solo piano by Hungarian composer Franz Liszt (1811-1886). He composed it between 1852 and 1853 while traveling across Europe as a performing virtuoso, publishing it one year later with a dedication to Robert Schumann in return for dedicating his 1836 Fantasie in C, Op. 17 , to Liszt. Although the sonata is played as one continuous movement, it has three distinct sections: following a solemn invocation based of one of the principle themes, there is a stormy opening section marked Allegro energico, which introduces four other main motifs; next, there is a slow, meditative though emotionally fraught Recitativo section corresponding roughly to the development; then, the brisk Allegro energico tempo is resumed in a grand fugato that weaves together a few of the principle motifs, leading into a recapitulation of the first section and a more tranquil final coda. Rachmaninoff 1st Piano Sonata Op28 Mov.1 Valentina Lisitsa
No recording, no matter how perfect, can do a justice to this sonata. The sheer power and strength of this enormous stream of sound, Amazon river of piano writing, doesn't translate well into limited bandwidth of even the most hi-def capturing. It's best left to concert halls. I hope those of you who have a chance will visit Dortmund in a couple of weeks , April 17th to be exact : tinyurl.com There is lots of Scriabin, more Rach and some Liszt...but this piece is a true centerpiece of a program. And this it the only occasion for me to play it live this year. So, grab your chance :-) lol Few words about the piece- being Op 28 , it has far more famous and popular pieces for its neighbors: 2nd Symphony, Third Concerto, Cello Sonata...Since no Hollywood movie ever borrowed either a melody or a plot fro this piece, it remains largely as unknown and unappreciated as it was when "born". Rachmaninoff, being extremely insecure about himself and his art, asked for an opinion of several friends. Of course, being real friends ( lol) they didn't pass a chance to say that the piece is too long, too boring and too difficult. Rachmaninoff subjected it to several bodily mutilations- again, acting on "helpful" friends' suggestions, cutting out good 10 minutes = 25% of the original piece. He later said about inflicting similar cuts in 2nd Symphony that he feels like he is cutting his own live flesh... One of those friends, Konstantin Igumnov, delivered the debut performance of the mutilated ...

Beethoven Piano Sonata #1 In F Minor, Op. 2, No. 1 - 1. Allegro by Daniel Barenboim
The first movement, in 2/2 time, is in Sonata form (typical for the first movement of a Sonata). The first theme is driven by a Mannheim Rocket, very similar to the opening of the first movement of Mozart's Symphony No. 25. The second theme, in A-flat major, is accompanied by eighth-note octaves in the bass (usually with dominant harmony). There are two codettas; the first consists of a series of energetic descending scales in A-flat major, and the second is a lyrical passage marked con espressione. In this second codetta and in the second theme Beethoven makes interesting use of mode mixture as the right hand parts borrows from the parallel minor. The development opens with the initial theme, but is mostly dedicated to the second theme and its eighth-note accompaniment. The retransition to the main theme uses its sixteenth-note triplet. The recapitulation repeats the material from the exposition without much change, except that it stays in F minor throughout. There is a short coda. A tense, agitated feel is ubiquitous throughout the movement. If played at speed, where one quarter note equals 126 to 138 macrobeats per minute, this movement can be challenging to perfect.

Mozart - piano sonata no. 14 in C minor KV 457 (1/3) [by Vadim Chaimovich]
Mozart - piano sonata no. 14 in C minor KV 457. Movement 1. MOLTO ALLEGRO pf. Vadim Chaimovich Relation to Beethoven's "Pathétique" Of this sonata Köchel said "Without question this is the most important of all Mozart's pianoforte sonatas. Surpassing all the others by reason of the fire and passion which, to its last note, breathe through it, it foreshadows the pianoforte sonata, as it was destined to become in the hands of Beethoven." Indeed, Mozart's sonata feels in several ways prophetic of Beethoven's great C minor sonata Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, "Pathétique" (which it predates by roughly fifteen years), and both works share a similar overall plan. Listeners will note that Mozart's theme in his spacious second movement is remarkably similar to that which Beethoven used in his own "Adagio cantabile" second movement. Rudolf Serkin - Schubert, Piano Sonata in B flat
Rare video of Rudolf Serkin. Rudolf Serkin (March 28, 1903 -- May 8, 1991) was a Bohemian-born pianist. He was born in Cheb (Eger), Bohemia (now Czech Republic) to a Russian-Jewish family. Hailed as a child prodigy, Serkin was sent to Vienna at the age of nine, where he studied piano with Richard Robert and, later, composition with Joseph Marx making his public debut with the Vienna Philharmonic at 12. From 1918 to 1920 he studied composition with Arnold Schoenberg and participated actively in Schoenberg's Society for the Private Performance of Music. He began a regular concert career in 1920, living in Berlin with violinist Adolf Busch and his family, which included a then three-year-old daughter Irene, whom Serkin would marry 15 years later. Throughout the 1920s and early 1930s, Serkin performed throughout Europe both as soloist and with Busch and the Busch Quartet. With the rise of the Nazi party in Germany, Serkin and the Busches left Berlin for Switzerland. In 1933 Serkin made his first United States appearance at the Coolidge Festival in Washington, DC, where he performed with Adolf Busch. In 1936 he launched his solo concert career in the US with the New York Philharmonic under Arturo Toscanini. The critics raved, describing him as "an artist of unusual and impressive talents in possession of a crystalline technique, plenty of power, delicacy, and tonal purity." Although Serkin himself admitted to having some problems with his octave technique, his technical ...
