Alfred the Great (Part 1 of 3).
Alfred the Great -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- King Alfred's struggle. By 870 the Danes had overthrown the kingdoms of East Anglia, Northumbria, and Mercia, and were preparing to do the same to Wessex. Standing in their way was a young king of Wessex, Alfred by name. At first the fight went badly for Alfred; some of his allies found it more expedient to cooperate with the Danes, and in 877 he was pushed back to a small corner of the marshes around Athelney, in Somerset. The tale of the griddle-cakes. It is this time, at the low ebb of Anglo-Saxon resistance to the Danes, that is commemorated in the folk tale of Alfred and the griddle cakes. The story goes that Alfred was so low in his fortunes that he was forced to travel anonymously and seek lodging in a peasant woman's hut. Told to mind the cakes cooking on the fire, Alfred let his thoughts wander to his troubles. The cakes burned, and the peasant woman gave her king a good scolding for his carelessness. True or not, the story illustrates the depth to which the young Alfred had sunk in his battle with the Danish invaders. From that point on, however, things began to look up. Alfred's triumph. Alfred came out of the Athelney marshes and surprised the Danes under Guthrum at Edington, in Wiltshire. After a thorough victory for Alfred, Guthrum was chased back to his base at Chippenham, where he was besieged for two weeks. Eventually Guthrum surrendered, and agreed to ...

Alfred Deller sings "Shall I Come, Sweet Love, to Thee" - Thomas Campion
Video footage of the great English countertenor singing Thomas Campion's Elizabethan love-song. Robert Spencer, lute. Link to My Alfred Deller playlist: www.youtube.com Shall I come, sweet Love, to thee When the evening beams are set? Shall I not excluded be, Will you find no feigned let? Let me not, for pity, more Tell the long hours at your door. Who can tell what thief or foe, In the covert of the night, For his prey will work my woe, Or through wicked foul despite? So may I die unredrest Ere my long love be possest. But to let such dangers pass, Which a lover's thoughts disdain, 'Tis enough in such a place To attend love's joys in vain: Do not mock me in thy bed, While these cold nights freeze me dead.

Lazarus, Come Forth!
One of the great spectacle moments in golden age cinema. Max Von Sydow raises the bar on miracles in George Stevens take on Christ's ministry and crucifixion. Though lifted from his score for THE ROBE, Alfred Newman's hauntingly powerful music perfectly portrays the complex mix of shock and reverence that defines the scene.

TS Eliot "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" Poem animation
Heres a virtual movie of the great TS Eliot reading his amazing many faceted poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" commonly known as Prufrock, is a poem by TS Eliot, begun in February 1910 and published in Chicago in June 1915. Described as a "drama of literary anguish," it presents a stream of consciousness in the form of a dramatic monologue, and marked the beginning of Eliot's career as an influential poet. With its weariness, regret, embarrassment, longing, emasculation, sexual frustration, sense of decay, and awareness of mortality, Prufrock has become one of the most recognized voices in modern literature.Composed mainly between February 1910 and July or August 1911, the poem was first published in Chicago in the June 1915 issue of Poetry: A Magazine of Verse. Because the poem is concerned primarily with the irregular musings of the narrator, it can be difficult to interpret. Laurence Perrine wrote, "[the poem] presents the apparently random thoughts going through a person's head within a certain time interval, in which the transitional links are psychological rather than logical".[16] This stylistic choice makes it difficult to determine exactly what is literal and what is symbolic. On the surface, "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" relays the thoughts of a sexually frustrated middle-aged man who wants to say something but is afraid to do so, and ultimately does not.[16][17] The dispute, however, lies in to whom Prufrock is speaking, whether he is actually ...

Michael Chekhov: THE MASTER CLASSES (Complete 1955 recordings)
The great Russian actor, director and teacher Michael Chekhov (1891-1955)...nephew of the famous playwright Anton Chekhov gives his final testament on theatre and the art of acting personally from his lecture hall in Hollywood, California from the last year of his life. He was Konstantin Stanislavsky's (1863-1938) greatest disciple (from 1912 to 1918) and went on to further and surpass his master's techniques and ideas. He incorporated world philosophy and spiritual ideas (called Anthroposophy) into his art which he stumbled upon in 1918 from the famous German philosopher Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), whom he met for the first time a few years later, in 1922. This is as close as one can get to personally knowing Rudolf Steiner himself through one of his greatest pupils. Chekhov quietly continued his Anthroposophical theatre work up until his death on Sept. 30, 1955. Some of Chekhov's many students include: Anthony Quinn, Gregory Peck, Jack Nicholson, Marilyn Monroe, Ingrid Bergman, Jack Palance, Anthony Hopkins, Elia Kazan, Clint Eastwood, Gary Cooper and Yul Brynner. Chekhov's colleagues, friends, and associates include: Sergei Rachmaninov, Max Reinhardt, Stella Adler, Edouard Schuré, Alfred Hitchcock and Marie von Sivers (Marie Steiner). This 5 hour collection of lectures is divided into four parts: 1) Characterization 2) Multi-Layered Acting - Avoiding Monotony (starts @ 1:15:05) 3) Awakening Artistic Feelings - Love (starts @ 2:32:37) 4) Guiding Principles - Overcoming ...

Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. He trained as an actor and director in New York with Salem Ludwig and with Donna DeMatteo for playwriting. For Mani, the decision to work in the film industry guided his academic decisions from an early age. He attended a Toronto high school renowned for excellence in the arts, and was accepted into one of the highly competitive film program at Ryerson university. It is notable that he went to Ryerson with an already well-established career in theatre, film, television and commercial work, and a range of multi-faceted achievements including producing, cinematography, casting, writing, directing, acting, and editing. On his own he added stints in New York and Los Angeles with leading acting teachers, as well as learning the grace and style of many forms of dance and athletics. With courses perceptively, he has also recognized the importance of acquiring an understanding of the business side of the industry, and the varied aspects of technology and production. There are some people clearly born to follow the path they have chosen from the start. Mani Nasry has the passion to succeed, the curiosity and ingenuity required to lead and collaborate in an industry known for its impact and appeal, and the strength of character and work ethic to immerse himself in finding and telling an unforgettable story.

SILENCE OF DEATH directed by Mani Nasry (16MM FILM) 1ST YEAR RYERSON UNIVERSITY STUDENT FILM
IMDB PAGE
www.imdb.me/maninasry
This Scene expresses- FEAR- noun: an emotion experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger (usually accompanied by a desire to flee or fight). noun: a feeling of anxiety and agitation caused by the presence or nearness of danger, evil, pain, etc.; timidity; dread; terror; fright; apprehension. Terrify not your soul with vain imaginary fears. By realizing that you are the one feeding the fire, you can start to take control of your fears. Panic is a vicious cycle that can be broken. When you start to have irrational fears you need to take action quick. Eleanor Roosevelt once said: "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing, which you think you cannot do." We must stop running away from things that frighten us, face our fears head on, and do the thing we fear the most. Most of the time we'll find out that the "thing" was not that scary after all. Our imaginations had behaved like a super fertilizer and grown a grotesque monstrosity in our minds. Remember, our imaginations are incredibly powerful. They can work against us, creating horrible images that leave us paralyzed with fear and they can also work for us, building a world where everything we do is an adventure, a miracle. And the most amazing thing is that we hold the power to control our minds - we allow fear to dominate our lives or we choose to dominate fear. Those are our only two choices.

The Wolfe Tones - Let the People Sing
Music has been a big part of Irish life from day one. The High King of Ireland, Cormac MacArt (AD 254-277) was know as 'Ceolach' meaning musical. He was surrounded by musicians and singers. The Great music school of St.Gall was founded by the Irish Abbot Meongal. Ireland became a musical school for people across the sea in ancient times. The Saxon Kings recieved their tuition from the Irish. Irish settlers in Wales introduced the Welsh to Celtic minstrelsy and taught them the music of Erin. The English were also musically inspired by the ancient Irish. Alfred the Great sought help from the Abbot of Clonmacnoise to set up musical universities like the Irish had. John of Salesbury once said in 1099 -"there would be no music at all but for the irish" The first book on the theory of music in the english language was written by a Dubliner William Bathe in 1584. Irish music was loved and inspired the people. Some lords used music to inspire men to fight. The Norman invaders detested this so much they passed laws banning Harpers, Bards, and ballad singers. This music survived all of that and is alive to this very day inspiring people in song. Songs about opression, the Great Famine, Foreign occupation can all be heard today. Many would like it to be silenced.... Let the People Sing!
