Lockheed U-2 Flight - 70000ft (2 Seat TU-2 Trainer)
If you have any questions about this vid, please have a read of these notes first. =) It covers the most frequently asked ones. - Yes, it's James May, aka, Captain Slow of Top Gear fame. - No, this isn't from an episode of Top Gear. This was from a TV special called "James May On The Moon", which was made to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landings. James May has made several series that are completely unrelated to Top Gear. - The music is called "Flight" performed by Ty Unwin especially for this show. I'm sad to say that it is not currently available on its own. - The chase cars on take off and landing are a standard part of U-2 operations. They are there to assist the pilot, especially on landing. A combination of fragile and unstable rear landing gear, the aircrafts reluctance to descend and a high approach attitude that gives the pilot poor visibility of the ground has made the U-2 very difficult to land and so another U-2 pilot follows behind in the chase car to quite literally talk them down for the last few feet. A fair word of warning. I've been maintaining this video for over 3 years now and my patience for bad Call of Duty and drug jokes has worn rather thin. Either will have a pretty high chance of being deleted and the user blocked. When you get half a dozen of those comments a day, it becomes nothing more than spam. Please try to keep it clean and family friendly. In the spirit of the video. Check out www.youtube.com For clips from the ...

Lockheed U-2 USAF Aerospace Power
Courtesy: United States Air Force Mission The U-2 provides high-altitude, all-weather surveillance and reconnaissance, day or night, in direct support of US and allied forces. It delivers critical imagery and signals intelligence to decision makers throughout all phases of conflict, including peacetime indications and warnings, low-intensity conflict, and large-scale hostilities. Features The U-2S is a single-seat, single-engine, high-altitude/near space reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft providing signals, imagery, and electronic measurements and signature intelligence, or MASINT. Long and narrow wings give the U-2 glider-like characteristics and allow it to quickly lift heavy sensor payloads to unmatched altitudes, keeping them there for extended periods of time. The U-2 is capable of gathering a variety of imagery, including multi-spectral electro-optic, infrared, and synthetic aperture radar products which can be stored or sent to ground exploitation centers. In addition, it also supports high-resolution, broad-area synoptic coverage provided by the optical bar camera producing traditional film products which are developed and analyzed after landing. The U-2 also carries a signals intelligence payload. All intelligence products except for wet film can be transmitted in near real-time anywhere in the world via air-to-ground or air-to-satellite data links, rapidly providing critical information to combatant commanders. MASINT provides indications of recent ...

THIRTEEN DAYS- large exploding RC Lockheed U-2
On 27 October 1962. In flight from McCoy AFB, a U-2 was shot down over Cuba by two SA-2 Guideline surface-to-air missiles, killing the pilot, Major Rudolf Anderson, Jr. Anderson was posthumously awarded the first Air Force Cross. Grant McCune Design Designed and built 3 Lockheed U-2 spy planes for the movie "Thirteen Days" two were loaded with explosives for the scene where the aircraft is hit by a surface to air missile, both were powered by Jet Cat miniature jet engines The third was a beauty that you see in all the close ups, it had all the details of the original all the way down to the static ports, vents and even real glass over recessed cameras in its belly. for the shoot it was tail mounted onto a motion control platform the performed the needed moves for the camera. we shot the flying aircraft at Victorville airfield.

Lockheed U-2 Flight - 70000ft Altitude
Read the important facts before watching the video! You can see why the U-2 is considered the most difficult plane in the world to fly. Each pilot has a co-pilot, who chases the plane on the runway in a sports car. Most of the cars are either Pontiac GTOs or Chevrolet Cameros - the Air Force buys American. The chase cars talk the pilot down as he lands on bicycle-style landing gear. In that spacesuit, the pilot in the plane simply cannot get a good view of the runway. Upon takeoff, the wings on this plane, which extend 103 feet from tip to tip, literally flap. To stabilize the wings on the runway, two pogo sticks on wheels prop up the ends of the wings. As the plane flies away, the pogo sticks drop off. The plane climbs at an amazing rate of nearly 10000 feet a minute. Within about four minutes, it was at 40000 feet, higher than any commercial airplane. We kept going up to 13 miles above Earth's surface. You get an incredible sensation up there. As you look out the windows, it feels like you're floating, it feels like you're not moving, but you're actually going 500 mph. The U-2 was built to go higher than any other aircraft. In fact today, more than 50 years since it went into production, the U-2 flies higher than any aircraft in the world with the exception of the space shuttle. It is flying more missions and longer missions than ever before, nearly 70 missions a month over Iraq and Afghanistan , an operational tempo that is unequaled in history. The pilots fly for 11 ...

Lockheed U-2 Carrier OPS Declassified
In early 1964 Bob Schumacher conducted a number of trial landings and take-offs from the USS Ranger and a number of other CIA pilots, including Jim Barnes, became carrier qualified. The target for the U-2G was the French nuclear test site, situated at Mururoa Atoll in the middle of the South Pacific, well out of the range of a land-based U-2. Consequently, in May 64 a U-2G operating from the USS Ranger photographed Mururoa Atoll and until 1968 three of the CIAs fleet of U-2s and a number of pilots were always carrier capable, although few actual sorties were ever flown. Surely the most amazing and humbling views to be seen by any human on a regular basis. The view from a U-2 cruising at 70,000ft as the sky above turns black and the curvature of the Earth is visible.
Despite first flying over 50 years ago, the U-2 continues to serve in the USAF, having outlasted its Mach 3 replacement, the SR-71 (also from Lockheed).
The only people to have gone gone higher on any sort of regular basis were SR-71 pilots.
Astronautics have, of course, gone higher still, but certainly not on a regular basis.
There is a special message at the end of the video that I hope can be taken to heart by all.

Lockheed U-2E/F inflight refueling (EXTREMELY RARE)
This is extremely rare video of a Lockheed U-2E/F being refueled inflight by a Boeing KC-97L. In an effort to extend the range of the U-2 already considerable range, a number of aircraft were fitted with air-to-air refuelling (AAR) equipment -- the AAR capable U-2A was re-designated the U-2E and the AAR capable U-2Cs were re-designated the U-2F. However, although the AAR U-2s were capable of flying for 14 hours and over 7000 miles, this took little account of pilot fatigue and although an additional oxygen cylinder was installed on these aircraft, little use was made of this capability. It was also decided to see if the U-2 could operate from an aircraft carrier. A U-2 was equipped with a strengthened tail and an arrestor hook. A set of wing spoilers was also added to ensure the aircraft could actually land accurately on the flight deck, rather than floating over the arrestor cables and the carrier capable aircraft were re-designated U-2Gs. One aircraft, Article 349, was AAR and carrier capable and was the only U-2H.
