Kerbal Space Program - #057 - Full Space Plane Mission
Welcome back to Kerbal Space Program! In this video game you're responsible for building, launching and flying rockets in your own fledgling space program on planet Kerbin. The newest update to Kerbal Space Program version 0.18 adds more rocket parts, spacecraft docking and an overhauled computer guidance system.
Having botched the space plane orbit-to-runway landing in the last episode, some of you were interested in seeing a full mission with that spacecraft design. In this episode the dude abides these requests as we follow through launch, rendezvous, docking and hopeful pinpoint landing of our delta-wing space plane with Buzz Kerman!

Public domain film slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockwell_X-30
The Rockwell X-30 was an advanced technology demonstrator project for the National Aero-Space Plane (NASP), part of a United States project to create a single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) spacecraft and passenger spaceliner. It was cancelled in the early 1990s, before a prototype was completed, although a lot of development work in advanced materials and aerospace design was completed. While a goal of a future NASP was a passenger liner capable of two hour "trips" from Washington to Tokyo, the X-30 was planned for a crew of two and oriented towards testing.
Development
The NASP concept is thought to have come from the "Copper Canyon" project, in Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), running from 1982 to 1985. In his 1986 State of the Union address, President Ronald Reagan called for "a new Orient Express that could, by the end of the next decade, take off from Dulles Airport, accelerate up to 25 times the speed of sound, attaining low earth orbit or flying to Tokyo within two hours."
Research suggested a maximum speed of Mach 8 for scramjet based aircraft, as the vehicle would generate heat due to atmospheric friction, which would thus cost considerable energy. The project showed that much of this energy could be recovered by passing hydrogen over the skin and carrying the heat into the combustion chamber: Mach 20 then seemed possible. The result was a program funded by NASA, and the United States Department of Defense (funding was approximately equally divided between NASA, DARPA, the US Air Force, the Strategic Defense Initiative Office (SDIO) and the US Navy).
McDonnell Douglas, Rockwell International, and General Dynamics competed to develop technology for a hypersonic air-breathing SSTO vehicle. Rocketdyne and Pratt & Whitney competed to develop engines.
In 1990, the companies joined under the leadership of Rockwell International to develop the craft to deal with the technical and budgetary obstacles. Development on the X-30, as it was then designated, continued until 1993, when it was terminated amid budget cuts and technical concerns.
Design
The X-30 configuration was a highly integrated engine. The shovel-shaped forward fuselage generated a shock wave to compress air before it entered the engine. The aft fuselage formed an integrated nozzle to expand the exhaust. The engine between was a scramjet engine. At the time, however, no scramjet engine of the kind was close to operational.
The aerodynamic configuration was an example of a waverider. Most of the lift was generated by the fuselage by compression lift. The "wings" were small fins providing trim and control. This configuration was efficient for high-speed flight, but would have made take-off and slow-speed flight difficult.
Temperatures on the airframe were expected to be 980 °C (1800 °F) over a large part of the surface, with maximums of over 1650 °C (3000 °F) on the leading edges and portions of the engine. This required the development of high temperature lightweight materials, including alloys of titanium and aluminium called gamma and alpha titanium aluminide, advanced carbon/carbon composites, and titanium metal matrix composite (TMC) with silicon carbide fibers. Titanium matrix composites were used by McDonnell Douglas to create a representative fuselage section called "Task D". The Task D test article was four feet high by eight feet wide by eight feet long. A carbon/epoxy cryogenic hydrogen tank was integrated with the fuselage section and the whole assembly, including volatile and combustible hydrogen, was successfully tested with mechanical loads and a temperature of 820 °C (1500 °F) in 1992, just before program cancellation.
Despite progress in developing the necessary structural and propulsion technology, NASA still had substantial hurdles to overcome. The Department of Defense wanted it to carry a crew of two and even a small payload. The demands of being a man-rated vehicle, with the instrumentation, environmental control system, and safety equipment, made X-30 larger, heavier, and more expensive than required for a technology demonstrator. The result was a cancellation of the X-30 and a move toward a more modest hypersonic program that culminated in the unmanned X-43 "Hyper-X", which is essentially an unmanned scaled-down X-30. A large, detailed scale mock up of the X-30 was built by engineering students at Mississippi State University's Raspet Flight Research Lab in Starkville, Mississippi. The mock-up is on display at the Aviation Challenge campus of the U.S. Space Camp facility in Huntsville, Alabama...

The old MAKS Russian Space Plane might be new again - 2010.0
We're spreading rumors about a old yet new Russian Space Plane on your Spacevidcast for April 28th, 2010.It seems that unmanned space planes are all the rage these days. The Air Force recently launched their X-37B and last Friday Russia hinted that they may revive one of their long dead space plane programs. The Russian Multipurpose Aerospace System or MAKS is an innovative space plane that had its development frozen in 1991. In response to the US Air Force's recent launch of the X-37B, the Russian aerospace designer Vladimir Skorodelov has said that this could spur Russia to restart their own defunct Space Plane program. The Russian Shuttle is much like the X-37B, about the same size, same style, it is unmanned and can't get to orbit on its own. Back when it was designed in the 80's the Russian shuttle would launch aboard an An-225 airplane carrier, much like Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnight carrier. Unlike Virgin Galactic the MAKS vehicle will sit atop the airplane, not below it.The interesting thing about MAKS is that there is both an unmanned and manned configuration of the vehicle. Actually, there are three versions of MAKS on the table: MAKS-OS which is the manned orbital plane. MAKS-T which is designed to inject heavy payloads in to orbit. And finally MAKS-M which is a completely reusable unmanned space plane.

US secret 'space plane': X-37B starts Star Wars?
A secret space plane that has been years in the making is now set to launch into the final frontier. The United States Air Force plans to launch the X37B orbital test vehicle tomorrow, to perform a series of tests. Is this the beginning of the United States going above and beyond in space exploration or the beginning of the militarization of space?

Kerbal Space Program - Sub-Orbital Space Plane
Welcome back to Kerbal Space Program! In KSP, you're responsible for building, launching and flying rockets in your own fledgling space program on planet Kerbin. A new version (0.15) of Kerbal Space Program was just released, which adds a collection of new parts to build with, including wings and jet engines for designing SpacePlanes!
Today, inspired by Virgin Galactic's White Knight Two and Space Ship Two design, I attempt... ATTEMPT... to create my own piggy-backed sub-orbital space plane to kick-start the commercial space tourism industry of Kerbin! Many, many lives were lost as a result.

Using a Spaceplane as a Reusable Launch Vehicle in Kerbal Space Program 0.18
We've seen lots of videos of people putting planes in orbit in the past, but this one manages a complete launch profile, it gets into space, launches a space probe and then returns safely to a touchdown on Kerbin. The spaceprobe then performs a mission to the Mun. The only part of the spacecraft which isn't reusable is the clamp used to hold the payload on the back of the plane, this gets discarded.
This design is a heavily modified version of the Aeris 4A with the docking system removed and a completely redistributed tank system to help with the chronic spinout issues.

Kerbal Space Program 0.18.2 - NO MODS, ALL STOCK PARTS
Spiritwolf Corp. has presented its new VTOL pattern spaceship to Kerbin's leaders in response to growing concerns of alien invasion. Recent discoveries concerning disturbing artifacts found within the Kerbol System have left the super-powers rattled, and Spiritwolf intend to capitalise on the situation. The VTOL - Isprit MkIV is a light fighter (diplomatically unarmed upon sale) designed to meet the alien horde head on, boasting superior maneuverability and off-world functionality.
