Finland 
i/ˈfɪnlənd/ (
Finnish: Suomi; Swedish: Finland (help·info)), officially the Republic of Finland, is a Nordic country situated in the Fennoscandian region of Northern Europe. It is bordered by Sweden in the west, Norway in the north and Russia in the east, while Estonia lies to its south across the Gulf of Finland.
Around 5.4 million people reside in Finland, with the majority concentrated in the southern region. It is the eighth largest country in Europe in terms of area and the most sparsely populated country in the European Union. Finland is a parliamentary republic with a central government based in Helsinki and local governments in 336 municipalities, and an autonomous region of the Åland Islands. About one million residents live in the Greater Helsinki area, which consists of Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen and Vantaa, and a third of the country's GDP is produced there. Other larger cities include Tampere, Turku, Oulu, Jyväskylä, Lahti and Kuopio.

Colin Steele McRae, MBE (5 August 1968 – 15 September 2007) was a Scottish rally driver born in Lanark.
The son of five-time British Rally Champion Jimmy McRae and brother of rally driver Alister McRae, Colin McRae was the 1991 and 1992 British Rally Champion and, in 1995, became the first British person and the youngest to win the World Rally Championship Drivers' title. He still holds that record.
McRae's outstanding performance on the Subaru World Rally Team enabled the team to win the World Rally Championship Constructors' title three times in succession in 1995, 1996 and 1997. After a four-year spell with the Ford Motor Co. team, which saw McRae win nine events, he moved to Citroën World Rally Team in 2003 where, despite not winning an event, he helped them win the first of their three consecutive manufacturers' titles. He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to motorsport in 1996.
McRae died in 2007 when the helicopter he was piloting crashed near his home. The accident also claimed the lives of his son and two family friends. In November 2008 he was posthumously inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame.

Helsinki (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈhe̞l.siŋ.k̟i] ( listen); Swedish: Helsingfors, pronounced [ˈhɛlsɪŋfɔʂ] ( listen)) is the capital and largest city of Finland. It is in the region of Uusimaa, located in southern Finland, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, an arm of the Baltic Sea. Helsinki has a population of 616,042[7][3] an urban population of 1,176,976 (31 December 2012)[8] and a metropolitan population of 1,361,506, making it the most populous municipality and urban area in Finland. Helsinki is located some 80 kilometres (50 mi) north of Tallinn, Estonia, 400 kilometres (250 mi) east north east of Stockholm, Sweden, and 300 kilometres (190 mi) west of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Helsinki has close historical connections with these three cities.
The Helsinki metropolitan area includes urban core of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and surrounding commuter towns.[9] It is the world's northernmost metro area of over one million people, and the city is the northernmost capital of an EU member state. After Copenhagen and Stockholm it's the third largest city in the Nordic nations.
Helsinki is Finland's major political, educational, financial, cultural and research centre as well as one of northern Europe's major cities. Approximately 70% of foreign companies operating in Finland have settled in the Helsinki region.[10] The nearby municipality of Vantaa is the location of Helsinki Airport, with frequent service to various destinations in Europe and Asia.

Arriving in Helsinki and visiting Lonna Island | Finland Vlog Day 1

Surprise! We're back in Finland! After a long overnight flight from Toronto to Helsinki with Finnair we arrived and checked into the Katajanokka Hotel (Jail Hotel) nearby the market square.

Along the way we noticed several things have changed in the city! Firstly, in the market square port area there is the addition of the impressive new Ferris Wheel (or Observation Wheel) called the Finnair Sky Wheel. Also, as we traipsed downtown we noticed people eating their lunch in the sky! This massive crane lifts people into the air where they can eat their meal with impressive views over the city. Officially it is called 'dinner in the sky.'
With sweat pouring down our foreheads we decided to take a rest and attempt to get over our jet lag - neither of us slept well on the flight for some reason. Checking in at over 30 degrees it was the hottest day we've ever experienced in Finland.
After catching some much needed rest we joined a group of bloggers boarding a ferry bound for the recently opened island of Lonna. Lonna island, formerly a military island, is a quaint little island located nearby Suomenlinna.
For dinner we enjoyed typical Finnish summer dishes including grilled fish, potatoes and various kinds of vegetables.
Overall, it was the perfect way for us to spend our first day back in Finland and with a good night's sleep we'll be ready to hit the ground running tomorrow :)

Surprise, surprise, surprise!
We are back in Finland almost one year to the day that we left. This is awesome. This is one of my favorite countries in all of Europe. Most people when they arrive sometimes they go and freshen up. They might splash a little water on their faces or maybe go to the washroom after a long nine hour flight. But no. What is the first thing that I do - get my Salmiakki candy. I've been craving this for over a year and I've already ate half of the bag and I'm having even more now. So good!
What we're about to show you is called dinner in the sky. You are going to see some people sitting up on a table, just hanging from a crane. Look for yourself!
The port area or market square appears to be even bigger and busier than last time year. It is just bustling with activity and there is a Ferris Wheel right over there.
A bit hot and tired are we? Oh my gosh, so sweaty and tired. I need a shower and a bed. And you know what - this is easily the hottest day we've ever experienced in Finland. Yes. It is over thirty.
We're back in jail. We stayed here last year. We did. Let's check out the room. Come on in.
This room here used to be a jail cell which explains why the windows are so high up, so the prisoners couldn't escape. Also, they have really thick curtains here in Finland and that is because during the summer the sun just stays up a really long time. You wouldn't be able to sleep otherwise.
We're back in Finland on an eight day adventure and we plan on shooting a daily vlog. Basically what we want to do is just show you exactly what we're doing and what it is like to be in Finland in the summer - both in the city and outside in the countryside doing more adventure types of activities.
We just arrived at Lonna Island. This used to be a former military island and it has just opened to the public this summer, so we're going to check it out.
It was a really cool meal. We had grilled fish and potatoes. And that is just like the quintessential Finnish summer meal.

Arriving in Helsinki and visiting Lonna Island | Finland Vlog Day 1
Surprise, surprise, surprise!
We are back in Finland almost one year to the day that we left. This is awesome. This is one of my favorite countries in all of Europe. Most people when they arrive sometimes they go and freshen up. They might splash a little water on their faces or maybe go to the washroom after a long nine hour flight. But no. What is the first thing that I do - get my Salmiakki candy. I've been craving this for over a year and I've already ate half of the bag and I'm having even more now. So good!
What we're about to show you is called dinner in the sky. You are going to see some people sitting up on a table, just hanging from a crane. Look for yourself!
The port area or market square appears to be even bigger and busier than last time year. It is just bustling with activity and there is a Ferris Wheel right over there.
A bit hot and tired are we? Oh my gosh, so sweaty and tired. I need a shower and a bed. And you know what - this is easily the hottest day we've ever experienced in Finland. Yes. It is over thirty.
We're back in jail. We stayed here last year. We did. Let's check out the room. Come on in.
This room here used to be a jail cell which explains why the windows are so high up, so the prisoners couldn't escape. Also, they have really thick curtains here in Finland and that is because during the summer the sun just stays up a really long time. You wouldn't be able to sleep otherwise.
We're back in Finland on an eight day adventure and we plan on shooting a daily vlog. Basically what we want to do is just show you exactly what we're doing and what it is like to be in Finland in the summer - both in the city and outside in the countryside doing more adventure types of activities.
We just arrived at Lonna Island. This used to be a former military island and it has just opened to the public this summer, so we're going to check it out.
It was a really cool meal. We had grilled fish and potatoes. And that is just like the quintessential Finnish summer meal.

Heading back to Finland - and specifically Helsinki - was our greatest surprise this summer. As the capital city, it has the attractions any big city offers, yet it somehow retains plenty of small town charm. One of the main reasons is that you're never far from nature. Hop on a bicycle or kayak and you within a few kilometers you'll feel as though you're all alone at one with nature.

With its long days and short nights, summertime is a great time to be in Helsinki. This was our second visit to the Finnish capital, and we were excited as ever to experience it for a couple of days. With summer in full swing, we enjoyed dinners al fresco, boat trips to nearby islands, and lots of walking around town. Here's a look at how we spent our time in Helsinki:
This is a city that comes alive during the summer months, and it was great enjoying all the events taking place in the city as well as relaxing outdoors. We loved revisiting Helsinki and we discovered so many new places that we had completely skipped over the first time around.

Finnish Archipelago Travel Guide

One of the highlights of visiting Finland was our opportunity to be based in the Finnish Archipelago region for several days at a lovely little cottage guesthouse in Dalsbruk - also known as Taalintehdas. From there we had the opportunity to do adventure sports activities such as sea kayaking, canoeing, bicycling and hiking where we spotted wilderness. Moreover, the laid back pace of life and ample free time ensured we had a chance to sample Finnish cuisine such as rye bread, salmon, cream cheese, Finnish beer, Finnish chocolate and other delicacies such as Finnish pizza with smoked salmon! Finnish food was an immediate hit with our taste buds.
Nearby we had the chance to go island hopping by boat visiting around Kimito Island in the Kimitoon region. Some of the top highlights
From the town of Kasnas we caught a ferry heading to Rosala - home to a fascinating Viking Center. From there we continued on to Bengtskär lighthouse - the most remote lighthouse I've ever visited.
Prior to leaving we made sure to shop at a Finnish supermarket where we picked up Salmiakki, Salmiakki beer and Karl Fazer creamy milk chocolate.
Overall, it was a great change of pace from the chaotic city life we're used to Southeast Asia. We had a chance to relax and enjoy the wonderful scenery and hospitality in the Finnish Archipelago.

Helsinki, the Daughter of the Baltic, the Gibraltar of the North, a dividing line between east and west and a modern and liberal minded metropolis. Founded in 1550 by Swedish king Gustav I as a as a trading centre and in 1812, Csar Alexander I made it the capital of the Principality of Finland.
The Senaatintori is located in the centre of the city. The square is dominated by a monument and surrounded by a number of fine Neo-Classical buildings. Csar Alexander II included public, ecclesiastical and academic buildings in the square, including government offices, a cathedral and university.
Uspenski Cathedral is situated at the city's southern harbor and is the largest Russian Orthodox church in both western and northern Europe. Built in 1868 according to traditional Russian design its exterior is of red brick and it is crowned by 13 gilded domes.
The Finlandia Talo is Helsinki's concert and congress centre, a work of art that encapsulates the building and design philosophy of Alvar Aalto, one of Finland's most prominent architects of the 20th century. The white-colored opera house was completed in 1993. It was a daring project as the city's treasury was empty! But music reigned supreme and today the building is an important part of the city's cultural life.
Helsinki is a captivating city and has rightly been declared Europe's capital of culture.

Founded in 1550 by Swedish king, Gustav Vasa, as a trading centre, in 1812 Tsar Alexander The First made it the capital of the Principality Of Finland. Turku is the oldest city in Finland and is the country’s first capital city from where Finnish culture was born. It is still evocative of the Middle Ages. The sea, a magnificent island landscape and picturesque timber houses are typical of one of the oldest cities in the Gulf Of Bothnia, Uusikaupunki. It was there in 1712 that a peace treaty was signed between Russia and Sweden and this small, quiet town has a long maritime history. Further north is a town of seafarers and traders, Kokkola, of which the old town boasts the largest number of timber built houses in Finland. The cleric, Anders Chydenius, once lived here and laid the foundation of Liberalism, the freedom of both religion and trade. Oulu is the flourishing centre of Northern Finland. Along with its many green areas this city by the sea comes alive during the spring and summer months. Despite the harsh climate, tropical plants are popular in the city. The hilly landscape of the spacious Pallas Ounastunturi National Park is located in the north west, close to the Swedish border. Yellow-green reindeer moss and dense layers of many other varieties grow on the seemingly endless hills of primeval stone and gneiss. The plant life of this region always surprises those who encounter it for the first time. Finland is a country that boasts more lakes than any other. Surprise! We're back in Finland! After a long overnight flight from Toronto to Helsinki with Finnair we arrived and checked into the Katajanokka Hotel (Jail Hotel) nearby the market square. http://nomadicsamuel.com/photo-essays/helsinki-travel-guide http://nomadicsamuel.com/video-blog/arriving-helsinki-visiting-lonna-island Along the way we noticed several things have changed in the city! Firstly, in the market square port area there is the addition of the impressive new Ferris Wheel (or Observation Wheel) called the Finnair Sky Wheel. Also, as we traipsed downtown we noticed people eating their lunch in the sky! This massive crane lifts people into the air where they can eat their meal with impressive views over the city. Officially it is called 'dinner in the sky.' With sweat pouring down our foreheads we decided to take a rest and attempt to get over our jet lag - neither of us slept well on the flight for some reason. Checking in at over 30 degrees it was the hottest day we've ever experienced in Finland. After catching some much needed rest we joined a group of bloggers boarding a ferry bound for the recently opened island of Lonna. Lonna island, formerly a military island, is a quaint little island located nearby Suomenlinna. For dinner we enjoyed typical Finnish summer dishes including grilled fish, potatoes and various kinds of vegetables. Overall, it was the perfect way for us to spend our first day back in Finland and with a good night's sleep we'll be ready to hit the ground running tomorrow :) Arriving in Helsinki and visiting Lonna Island | Finland Vlog Day 1 Surprise, surprise, surprise! We are back in Finland almost one year to the day that we left. This is awesome. This is one of my favorite countries in all of Europe. Most people when they arrive sometimes they go and freshen up. They might splash a little water on their faces or maybe go to the washroom after a long nine hour flight. But no. What is the first thing that I do - get my Salmiakki candy. I've been craving this for over a year and I've already ate half of the bag and I'm having even more now. So good! What we're about to show you is called dinner in the sky. You are going to see some people sitting up on a table, just hanging from a crane. Look for yourself! The port area or market square appears to be even bigger and busier than last time year. It is just bustling with activity and there is a Ferris Wheel right over there. A bit hot and tired are we? Oh my gosh, so sweaty and tired. I need a shower and a bed. And you know what - this is easily the hottest day we've ever experienced in Finland. Yes. It is over thirty. We're back in jail. We stayed here last year. We did. Let's check out the room. Come on in. This room here used to be a jail cell which explains why the windows are so high up, so the prisoners couldn't escape. Also, they have really thick curtains here in Finland and that is because during the summer the sun just stays up a really long time. You wouldn't be able to sleep otherwise. We're back in Finland on an eight day adventure and we plan on shooting a daily vlog. Basically what we want to do is just show you exactly what we're doing and what it is like to be in Finland in the summer - both in the city and outside in the countryside doing more adventure types of activities. We just arrived at Lonna Island. This used to be a former military island and it has just opened to the public this summer, so we're going to check it out. It was a really cool meal. Early on Friday, the terrorist group dragged at least 11 men from homes in Miringa, a remote village in the Nigeria’s northeast Borno state, and executed them in the presence of villagers. According to AFP, the men had allegedly escaped forced conscription by the armed group. The Syrian army backed by the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah launched an assult on the city of Zabadani, near Damascus, in a fresh push to seize the last rebel stronghold along Lebanon’s border. It's only the second time after Kuopio in 2005 that the Inline Hockey World Championship takes place in Finland and the Finns couldn't have selected a better year after winning the last edition one year ago in Pardubice, Czech Republic....
