Hatching of a Mojave Desert Tortoise
Visit the USGS Multimedia Gallery (gallery.usgs.gov for this video and others. This four minute short movie depicts the hatching of a Mojave Desert Tortoise. This is the continuation of a sixty million year process for this threatened species. One of the surprising moments in the movie is when the hatchling tumbles from its shell and is propped up by its yolk. This is an evolutionary adaptation where the young absorb the yolk over several hours and they then use that nutrition to sustain themselves during the first few months of their lives. This is an especially handy adaptation as the young tortoises hatch in late summer when temperatures can exceed 110 degrees making the search for food especially difficult. The images shown here are part of a larger movie expected to be released by the USGS in November, 2009. That program will depict the USGS research program on the Desert Tortoise and the role of that research in managing desert environments to allow the species to recover and escape the threat of extinction. This movie was produced by the USGS Western Ecological Research Center and USGS Western Region Office of Communications in cooperation with the Las Vegas based Desert Tortoise Conservation Center, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the Nevada Department of Wildlife and the San Diego Zoo.

New Report's USGS. With LINKS
Bizarre 2012 earthquake signals birth of world's newest tectonic plate After millions more years of similar earthquakes, the ruptures will begin to favor a particular path, giving rise to a new plate boundary, and separating today's existing plate into two. "Here, they really do seem to go along perpendicular faults, and we haven't seen anything like that with a big earthquake," he said. However, he said, the weird rupture pattern reflects the weird geological circumstances at play in the neighborhood where the earthquake hit. The April 11 earthquake occurred in a region that is giving birth to the Earth's newest tectonic plate. Record-Breaking Burmese Python (17 feet, 7 inches, 87 eggs)
gallery.usgs.gov Sound starts at: 0:53 Big Ol' Gal This female Burmese python broke the records for her length -- 17 feet, 7 inches -- and the number of eggs she contained: 87. She was first captured in Everglades National Park by USGS researchers in the spring of 2012, when they followed a "Judas snake" -- a male python with a transmitter -- and found her nearby in the bushes. USGS scientists then outfitted her with two radio transmitters, a GPS device, and a motion-sensing device before releasing her back into the wild. The second radio transmitter was a failsafe, ensuring she wouldn't "go wild" again. The snake remained in the wild for 38 days and then was removed and euthanized. The information from this snake's every move -- each pitch, roll, and yawl -- was recorded by the motion detector, allowing biologists to piece together her behaviors, including her kills. Biologists plan to use detailed information about the snake's biology and activity patterns to develop control methods for this invasive species. Pythons are effective at blending in the tall marsh grasses that give the Everglades its nickname, "The River of Grass," making it hard to spot the pythons even when they are being radiotracked. Click here for more information on USGS python research and read our most recent python-related press release.

Sea-Level Rise, Subsidence, and Wetland Loss
More information on the USGS Multimedia Gallery: gallery.usgs.gov This video describes causes of wetland loss in the Mississippi River Delta. Rapid land subsidence due to sediment compaction and dewatering increases the rate of submergence in this deltaic system. The construction of levees along the lower Mississippi River also has reduced delivery of sediments to coastal wetlands, which have been deteriorating as soil surfaces sink and wetland plants are subjected to excessive flooding. Other factors that have contributed to land loss include construction of canals and periodic hurricanes. Sea-level rise can lead to movement of saltwater inland, but coastal plants tolerate salinity through several morphological and physiological mechanisms. The causes of wetland loss are complex and not the result of any single factor. Natural and anthropogenic factors have combined with global processes such as sea level rise to cause wetland loss in the Mississippi River Delta.

USGS SHUTS DOWN SERVER (Mirror)
The USGS is deliberately hiding earth change data pointing to the approach of the ELEnin Dwarf Star. Take careful notice that the Earth is beginning to show signs of activity similar to before the March 11, 2011 alignment where Earth axis shifted 4 inches and aquifers around the world shifted along with the 9.0 Japan Quake. The reason is that Earth was orbiting towards the dwarf star on the first half of the nearside orbit in the winter. That caused an increase in earth change activity that calmed down once Earth began orbiting in the same direction to match orbit at 1.8 AU on April 25, 2011. Earth reached outside orbit position on May 28, 2011, when the dwarf appeared motionless in the sky to the lower left of 44 Leo; and the Earth began the backside orbit heading that made ELE appear to move from right to left in the nighttime skies. Now ELE is beginning to close rapidly on the Sun to reach maximum velocity on 9/11/2011, which is causing the increase in solar flare activity that will transition into solar storms between September 5 and 11. While Earth is still orbiting away from ELE, we are making the turn in the transition between summer and fall; as ELE is coming to perigee position. ELE will begin rapid closure on the Earth in the next 30 days to a position that is about one third the distance to the Sun by September 26-27, 2011 at the coming alignment. We should expect the Earth to begin reacting violently to ELE's approach, until the Earth core reaches maximum ...

USGS Science: Walrus Haul-Out 2011
Female Pacific walruses and their calves traditionally spend summers far from shore, diving for benthic invertebrates over the shallow continental shelf waters of the Chukchi Sea. These female walruses and their calves prefer to rest between forage bouts on sea ice drifting above their feeding grounds. However, in recent years loss of summer sea ice over the continental shelf has forced many walruses to travel to the northwest coast of Alaska where they haul-out on shore to rest. This large herd of walruses hauled out near Pt. Lay Alaska in August of 2011.

Tsunami Alert for Philippines The USGS Did not report this update
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology rated the earthquake at between magnitude 6 and 7, while the US geological survey said it was magnitude 6.7. Photograph: Rolex Dela Pena/EPA One child died and a local tsunami alert was issued after a magnitude 6.7 earthquake followed by two aftershocks struck off the Philippines island of Negros on Monday morning. The Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said it warned residents along coastal areas to be on the watch for unusual waves as it raised a tsunami alert at level two but did not order evacuations. The institute warned structurally weak buildings may sustain damages. The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said that based on all available data a Pacific-wide tsunami was not expected. People rushed out of schools, malls and offices during the quake. Officials in some areas suspended work and cancelled classes. A child died when a concrete fence of a house collapsed in Taysan town in Negros Oriental province, said Benito Ramos, who heads the Office of Civil Defence. A mall in San Carlos city in neighbouring Negros Occidental province was damaged when its windows were shattered by the shaking, he said. The quake was also felt in Cebu, where it lasted about 30 seconds. The Philippines is located in the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where earthquakes and volcanic activity are common. A 7.7-magnitude quake killed nearly 2000 people in Luzon in 1990. The quake was about 6.2 miles underground and centred three ...

Mount St. Helens' Runaway Glacier: A time-lapse video of Crater Glacier
gallery.usgs.gov From 2005 to 2010, the US Geological Survey-Cascades Volcano Observatory operated a remote camera on the northwest flank of Mount St. Helens. Looking into the crater, the camera captured hourly photographs of volcanic dome growth during the 2004-2008 eruption. The station also captured the advance of the west arm of Crater Glacier as it moved northeast around the 1980-1986 and 2004-2008 lava domes, joined with the east arm of the glacier, and pushed northward onto the crater floor. The time-lapse sequence links individual photographs to produce a video of the movement of Crater Glacier, showing the glacier's remarkable run-away response to volcanic dome growth.
