Haast's eagle-New Zealand giant eagle
--- English --- Giant eagles not the stuff of legend. The Haast eagle, (Harpogornis moorei) the largest, most powerful, eagle the world has known, the females weighing as much as 13-15 kilograms, with wings spanning almost three metres and its talons (claws) were about 7.5cm long. Images of Haast's eagle are found in rock paintings drawn in the 13th and 14th century. Haast's eagle has been known to science since 1871, (Frederick Fuller- Johann Franz Julio Haast. Cantorbery), but until recently virtually nothing was known of how it may have lived, or how it was related to other kinds of eagles. Elsdon Best records that it was a legendary bird, reputed to carry off and devour men, women and children. The Haast's eagle was likely extinct by 1400 AD, although there are a few 19th century accounts of sightings of very large birds of prey in mountainous areas. The Haast eagle succumbed to the environmental damage resulting from Polynesian colonisation. It became extinct probably several hundred years ago, along with the Moa, (Dinornis) its main food source.

The Big Three: Eagles
These are the big three of the eagle world. The Harpy, the Steller's, and the Philippine Eagle. Each known by their magnificent size, awesome strength and power. They are feared by other animals in their environment, making some, like the Philippine Eagle, as the top predator in its ecosystem. Sadly, these incredible birds are no exemption to the list of animals in danger of vanishing forever. The continued destruction of their habitat poses a big stress in the survival of their species. The plight of these eagles are uncertain and are in the brink of extinction. We already have lost the Haast's Eagle, the worlds' largest eagle. Are we going to do the same with these last big three?
