  New South Wales (abbreviated as NSW) is a state of Australia, located in the east of the country. New Zealand briefly became a part of New South Wales when it was annexed by Britain in 1840.   LaPaglia was born in Adelaide, South Australia, the son of Maria Johannes (née Brendel), a secretary, and Gedio "Eddie" LaPaglia, an auto mechanic and car dealer. LaPaglia's mother was Dutch and his Italian father immigrated from Bovalino, Calabria at the age of eighteen. His younger brother, Jonathan LaPaglia, is also an actor, and his other brother, Michael, is a car wholesaler in Los Angeles.^{[citation needed]} LaPaglia attended Rostrevor College.
  LaPaglia first began his venture into dramatic art in his late teens, when he enrolled in an acting course at the South Australian Castings Agency (SA Castings) in Adelaide. The two and half year course was to be supplemented with a further three months, which would have included a "boot camp" and a trial listing with SA Castings.   Joyce Carol Oates (born June 16, 1938) is an American author. Oates published her first book in 1963 and has since published over fifty novels, as well as many volumes of short stories, poetry, and nonfiction. Her novel them (1969) won the National Book Award, and her novels Black Water (1992), What I Lived For (1994), and Blonde (2000) were nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. As of 2008, Oates is the Roger S. Berlind '52 Professor in the Humanities with the Program in Creative Writing at Princeton University, where she has taught since 1978.
  Oates was born in Lockport, New York, the daughter of Carolina (née Bush), a homemaker, and Frederic James Oates, a tool and die designer. She was raised Catholic but is now an atheist. A brother, Fred Junior, was born in 1943, and a sister, Lynn Ann, who is severely autistic, was born in 1956. Oates grew up in the working-class farming community of Millersport, New York, and characterized hers as "a happy, close-knit and unextraordinary family for our time, place and economic status". Her paternal grandmother, Blanche Woodside, lived with the family and was "very close" to Joyce. After Blanche's death, Joyce learned that Blanche's father had killed himself and Blanche had subsequently concealed her Jewish heritage; Oates eventually drew on aspects of her grandmother's life in writing the 2007 novel The Gravedigger's Daughter.   Montgomery was born in Sydney, Australia, one of five daughters of Nicola (née Montgomery), an executive and market researcher, and Phil Donahue, a restauranteur. Her parents named her and her sisters (Rosie Thorn, Daisy Yellow, Lily Belle, and Marigold Sun) after flowers, and their brother after Jethro Tull.
  Montgomery hated school, being expelled from six private academies before finally dropping out at age 15 to pursue stage acting and to also travel around Bali with her then-boyfriend. Montgomery emigrated to the United States at age 18, arriving in Florida to meet a boy whom she'd met when he was an exchange student. After five days, she realized "I couldn't stand him" and then took a bus to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.
