THE KING'S SON & THE EMPEROR'S DAUGHTER complete (90 minutes)
a 90 minute collage of text, music and images, based on the lives of rabbi nachman of breslav and salon hostess rahel varnhagen. the lives of these two historical persons overlapped during the first decade of the 19th century. rabbi nachman of breslav founded the breslav hassidic sect in the ukraine, and rahel varnhagen was a salon hostess of the jewish enlightenment movement, known as the "haskalah", in berlin. i combined their biographies and imagined what might have happened in reality and in fantasy if nachman showed up at rahel's salon and attempted to bring the assimilating jews there back to the fold of orthodox judaism. the 90 minute show begins in the style of naturalism and evolves into an expressionistic fantasy being woven by the two main characters, in which nachman projects onto rahel the role of "the shekhinah" ( female aspect of god and also the jewish people in relation to god), while rahel projects onto nachman the role of messiah. so we end up at the end of the show with a fantasy marriage of the jewish people and the jewish messiah at the end of days, without forgetting for a moment that in real life these two never met and as a matter of fact rahel converted to christianity and married the german protestant nobleman august varnhagen.
IN THE ESSAYS THAT FOLLOW THE SHOW HAS ITS ORIGINAL NAME, "RAHEL! RAHEL!". I CHANGED THE NAME AFTER I DISCOVERED ON THE NET THAT PAUL NEWMAN MADE A MOVIE WITH THAT NAME BACK IN THE 1960'S.

APPRECIATING MY MUSICAL SHOW
"RAHEL! RAHEL!"
1. GENERAL THEORY
Of course, the best way to begin to appreciate most works of art is just to experience
them a few times and form your own conclusions. The opinions of the creator of an
artwork are merely incidental at that stage of the process. And certainly once an
artwork is created it takes on a life of its own, just like a child more and more slips out
of the control of its parents. Nevertheless, I think we will agree that this particular
artwork is unique in its form, what it seeks to accomplish, and the demands it makes on
its audience. "Rahel! Rahel!" is an ambitious project which reaches out beyond the
realm of art and grapples with major issues of religion and philosophy. Whether I as
the author have succeeded in my project is for you the audience to decide, but since
my artwork is intended to operate on several different levels I feel it appropriate for me
to lay out for you the plan of what might be there for you if I have succeeded in carrying
out my original goals. Just as I did not compromise in creating the piece, I will not
compromise here in discussing the piece. If you don't "get it", maybe I failed and there
ain't nothing there to "get" in the first place. Or if you don't "get it", maybe you need to
do some homework on your own, or just give up on it and go do something else more
appropriate for your talents.
Nachman of Breslav wrote "my Torah is entirely 'b'hinot' ". "B'hinot", in Hebrew, means
"aspects of", "associations", "points of view". For example, if I think of vanilla ice cream
then I can associate to that idea chocolate ice cream, or cows, or a forest of vanilla
beans somewhere in Madagascar. In other words, there is no limit to the range of
possible associations I might get. Nachman might have said instead, "my Torah is
entirely induction", and then we would contrast inductive logic to deductive logic.
Deductive logic begins with a single idea and like an upside down tree follows the
ramifications of that idea out into the myriad subdivisions and corollaries of that idea.
Scientific textbooks usually are written deductively. Inductive logic begins with the vast
realm of concrete living awareness experiences and step by step moves up the upside
down tree back to a single encompassing idea that strives to somehow include all of
the original experiences in its breadth. Francis Bacon in the 14th century championed
inductive logic. Theologically speaking, Breslav kabbalah is inductive thinking, while Chabad kabbalah is deductive thinking. Nachman begins with a wide range of Torah
texts and trusts in associative links to get to his main points, while Shneur Zalman,
author of the Chabad "Tanya", writes an orderly textbook in which he systematically
lays out his major and minor premisses. But both authors are using the same tree style
thinking. Nachman moves up the upside down tree, while Shneur Zalman moves
down the upside down tree, the kabbalistic tree of life on which the "sefirot" (points of
view) are hanging like Christmas tree ornaments. For philosophy in general, this tree

1985 Oct 26th Sahaja Culture USA
1985-1026: Sahaja Culture, New Jersey, Ashram, USA
Today I was thinking of talking, telling you about the Sahaja Culture.
Now we are formed in dharma, Vishwa Dharma. But it must have a culture. So far in all the religions there is no combination of religion and culture. No religion has. That's why everywhere you find different cultures. Say in India, people who follow Hindu religion have different cultures in different places. They are living in Lucknow, or say in U.P., they have a Muslim culture. More Islamic style. They'll eat in one plate, do all kinds of things which normally a South Indian won't do, and the South Indians have a different culture from Maharashtrians. So even in a religion like Hindu religion where culture is important, very important, we find varieties. So the cultures get influenced by the neighboring cultures or surrounding cultures, and that's how people get lost.
When you establish a religion like this, Vishwa Dharma, it's not like any other religion. It's the real religion within us, and this reality comes to us because now we are one with the Spirit. So when we talk of Sahaja Culture, it is the culture of the Spirit.
Now what is a culture? First of all let us see what is a culture is. So the culture is the pattern of behavior we have with others. Is a common pattern of behavior we are supposed to have with others. Like in English language, for example, we'll say "Thank you". Even if somebody murders, you may say, "Thank you". Or the person who murders you can say, "Sorry". On the phone one may say, just if they say something you can't hear, "Sorry?" Every time, "Sorry". As if "sorry" is a word so easily to be used. I mean if you are sorry, why are you sorry for that? "Sorry?" On the phone they used to first say, "I beg your pardon?", was sensible; but now I find everybody, A to Z, says, "Sorry?" I mean, it has no meaning, because what are you sorry about? Says "Sorry?" For everything they are sorry. Or we can say in English language, when we speak, "I'm afraid". You see, it's very common, "I'm afraid". What are you afraid of? The whole world is afraid of you.
So this is the culture, what we talk of, any culture as such, becomes artificial, is not spontaneous, doesn't come from reality. It has no meaning; sometimes it is pointless, absolutely pointless to stick to certain cultures. So the culture of the Spirit doesn't change. It's universal, and is higher than any other culture. Apart from that it integrates all the essences of all the cultures.
So it emanates from the spirit. Now, spirit has two sides. One side which you see, the another you don't see, like the moon. The side you see is outside with other people, other Sahaja Yogis, other people, other societies, which are not yourself, absolutely. The other side you don't see is the relationship with God Almighty, relationship with your Mother. If the other side is not all right, the behavioral side outside could become artificial, could become crooked and not Sahaj. So it's the other way round than any other culture. To know any other culture what do we go? We see how they talk, what is their language, how they speak, how they behave: all the outside things we get. We must know "thank you" if we want to know English language, must know "thank you", "please", all that. But if you want to know the Sahaja culture, you have to know your Mother, and you have to know God Almighty. And the relationship between your Mother and the God Almighty has to be absolutely perfect. Then there's no problem. But that, the relationship, if it is not all right, you cannot have artificial Sahaj culture. That is one thing for sure. Artificial Sahaj culture is not all right. I would say that India has, in its basics, the culture of the spirit, India has; because for traditions and traditions in India, and for ages, people have been seeking the truth. Spiritually they are endowed, because of the saints. They are blessed specially because they have been seekers, not of material things, but of the spirit. Specially in Maharashtra, we should say, because the Kundalini is there always like a magnet. People are attracted because Shri Ganesha being the magnet, attracted towards God and spirit. So they form a pattern, but there is lot of artificiality in that also has grown. We must admit that there is lot, lot of artificiality, falsehood, nonsense that has grown into it, because the religion fell into the hands of, spiritual religion fell into the hands of gross, horrible so-called Brahmins who were not realized souls. So the whole culture has become so nonsensical sometimes that you don't know where to look.
But to have the culture, first of all, culture is developed through meditation, by facing yourself. First of all you should face yourself, how you feel about your Mother and about God Almighty. First of all, how much liberty you take of your Mother? How much granted, take for granted your Mother? She's a Mahamaya. Even the first "M" is difficult t

Heliogabale and war of principles (enhanced version)
(The English translation is below)
Video i made with a Phone
(The English translation is below)

RAAKH (Ashes to Ashes) Teaser
Bombay, twenty years ago, a twenty-four year old from Carter road, Bandra got together with a slightly older beardo from Byculla, put together a team and realised their dream...
Most of us, were first timers (you may recognise some of the names in the credits below) and there was an innocence, an energy that brought us all together. Every day of shoot, of post-production was pure unadulterated joy and was somehow untouched by the cynicism that marks our trade.
RAAKH is presently unavailable to rent or buy and has never (officially) been on Tv. Asif & I are working on a twentieth anniversary edition. Till then, here’s a small snippet, enjoy
and welcome to 20 10!
Aditya B.
Here's a New York Times, Reader Review from June 18th, 2008:
Aamir as Aamir at his adamant best-Ashes to Ashes.
This dark movie is set in the bizarre twilight zone of the degenerate and venomous world of the Bombay underworld ,where there is only one vice that rules-might is right,
it's protagonists search for their own existence in alignment with their ideals for justice and an uneven fairplay and use each other as pawns in a game of violence and corruption .
Amir is a rebellious scion of a well to do muslim family who in a rash act of rage provokes the gang rape of his hindu girlfriend by a group of mafia men .
The graphic unsentimentality of the act at night in a desolate public spot is chilling .
The relationship breaks up ,the girl shuns him and her indifference to any mode of justice drives the youth to extremes ,he elopes and lives with social outcasts, where he is helped by a rather shady cop who works outside the parameters of judiciary.
Amir is totally natural and very affective as the angry, violent and impulsive youth ,this is his definitive best act as yet and he needs to go back to his roots as this was his second movie itself, his raw dynamic talent resounds in every scene and the minimalist cinema with expressionist photography enhances his violent deadly role,he is matched by the rather insanely dishonest cop played by Pankaj Kapur and Supraya Pathak as the rape victim who blames him for the incidence in a powerful role, the police are indifferent as there are no witnesses and the victim will not report the crime ,although it is acknowledged .
the brilliant young director has a frustrating setting for a social comment on a grim subject, the perception of acquisition of justice and the means to aquire it , both are unimportant as the net result is more violence and the act leads to anarchy and nihilism, this is a very profoundly affective cinema beautifully shot with minimal dialogues and light , the brooding shadows reflect the title itself which refers to the ashes of the remnants of the living characters in a metaphor as their existence has been reduced to a void which can never be filled .
The finale is bleak and the desperation of the human existence is shown to be damned forever with no hope of redemption , the conclusion is left open to the audience .
This is an anthology of violence , justice and lost youth within the framework of an unjust social hypocrisy where law is invalid and might is right , that might be unreasonable but it could be a universal truth , nevertheless Aditya and Amir create a dark masterpiece which goes beyond it's baroque , brooding beauty with hypnotically lit frames that remind you of the psychological impact and spirituality of the works by Caravaggio and La Tour , an eerie light that explores the human soul and questions it's conscience , the answer is inconclusive but still great cinema .
