Breathtaking Bernina Express: An extraordinary train experience in Switzerland (1/9)
The Bernina Railway is a single track metre gauge railway line forming part of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). It links the spa resort of St. Moritz, in the Canton of Grisons/Graubünden, Switzerland, with the town of Tirano, located right next to the Swiss border in Italy, via the 2253metres/7600feet high Bernina Pass. It also ranks as the highest adhesion railway in the Alps, and - with inclines of up to 7% - as one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world. On 7 July 2008, the Bernina Railway and the Albula Railway, which also forms part of the RhB, were recorded in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, under the name Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes. The whole site is regarded as a cross border joint Swiss-Italian heritage area. The most famous trains operating on the Bernina Railway are known as the Bernina Express. The Bernina Express is an express train connecting Chur in Switzerland with Poschiavo and Tirano in Italy, by crossing the Swiss Alps from north to south. The trip on the Bernina Express through this World Heritage Site is a 4 hour railway journey across 196 bridges, through 55 tunnels and across the Bernina Pass on the highest point at 2253 metres in altitude. The line followed by Switzerland's Bernina Express is a masterpiece of engineering works. Its combination with the surrounding landscape is what constitutes its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This video shows the departure of the Bernina Express in Tirano (Italy ...

Bernina Express - Bernina Railway - RHB
Infos: Infos: www.gartenzug.ch English: The Bernina railway line forms the heart of the Unesco World Cultural Heritage listing and is regarded as one of the world's most spectacular routes. The Bernina Express passes by the gigantic Morteratsch glacier, climbs without the help of cogwheels across Europe's highest railway Alpine pass, the 2253-metre-high Bernina, and winds down to Poschiavo along daring loops. Passengers travelling on to Tirano will experience a further exclusivity in Brusio: an exposed helical tunnel. The "Kleine Rote" (small red one) is the heart of the Albula/Bernina UNESCO World Heritage listing, which also includes the surrounding cultural landscape with its pristine villages, ruggedly-romantic landscapes and primordial Alps. Rhätische Bahn: Bernina
Mit der Rhätischen Bahn von St. Moritz (1770 m) über den Bernina Pass (2256 m) bis nach Poschiavo (1014 m). The salient feature of the Albula/Bernina landscapes is the Rhaetian Railway. The Albula railway was completed in 1903, the Bernina railway in 1910. The Albula railway was recognised as a masterpiece of engineering from the outset. The Bernina railway (St. Moritz Tirano) immediately became the model for many projects throughout the Alps and the recognised standard for several railways that were built later. Today it holds a unique position worldwide: it is the highest altitude transalpine railway in Europe and one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world. he surrounding landscape is an essential feature of the exceptional importance of the Albula and Bernina line, emphasising the direct link to the qualitatively unique railway structures as the railway runs through a very varied, rich cultural landscape. The railway engineering structures merge with the exceptional topography in a single spectacular whole. The choice of alignment was motivated by the wish to make the route particularly striking for tourism ie to emphasise the attractions of the landscape. The cultural features of past and present thus interact with a natural landscape of an alpine to high alpine character and 1 of spectacular beauty. On 13th June 2007 the governing body, RhB World Heritage Site, was founded. This organisations purpose is to coordinate between the institutions involved in the ...

Bernina Express
Recorded August 15, 2011: One of the most spectacular ways to cross the Alps. The Bernina Express is the highest and steepest train that runs in Switzerland. This winding mountain railway connects northern and southern Europe without the use of any toothed-wheel mechanism. A particular high-point of the ride is the panoramic view from the Bernina Express, as it passes mighty glaciers. The train makes short work of the 55 Tunnels, 196 bridges and slopes of up to 70 millimetres per metre of incline that are found along its route. The physical high-point of the RhB is Ospizio Bernina, at 2253 metres above sea level. Since summer 2008, the section between Thusis and Tirano has been classed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Paul Steedman and his team took H0m gauge model railway 'Rhatia' to the 'Narrow Gauge West' exhibition at Shepton Mallet recently. I took along a train of the neighbouring 'Bernina Bahn' (also metre gauge and part of the RhB), for Paul to run for a change. My thanks go to Paul and his team for not only allowing "foreign stock" on their layout but for letting me loose on the controls, too. It was great fun! ;^D Thanks guys; hope you like the vid.
