Callanish | Exploring the Hyperborean Temple of the Far North | Megalithomania
An exploration of one of the most impressive megalithic sites in Britain. Located in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, on the Isle of Lewis, Callanish (Calanais) was built around 5000 years ago, has a central circle of 13 stones with a menhir in the middle, and is surrounded by 4 avenues, shaped like a celtic cross. It has legends of the 'Shining Ones' with feathered robes building the site, as well a references to a mysterious cuckoo linked with the summer solstice, is aligned to the 18.6 year metonic moon cycle and is part of a massive complex of megalithic sites that stretch across the island. In legend, St Kieron turned giants to stone and that is how the circle was created! We visited the site during the equinox 2020 and were greeted to perfect weather. Callanish IV, Callanish standing Stones, Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides
The Callanish IV stone circle (Scottish Gaelic: Ceann Hulavig) is one of many megalithic structures around the better-known (and larger) Calanais I on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides (Western Isles), Scotland.
Callanish IV is around two miles southeast of the Callanish Stones, about 180 metres west of the unfenced B8011 road.
The stone circle forms a pronounced oval measuring 13.3 by 9.5 metres. Only five stones currently stand, but there could have been as many as thirteen. The stones range in size from 2 to 2.7 metres.
In the centre is a dilapidated cairn. A small slab, 60 centimetres high, is set on edge within the cairn

Callanish IV Stone Circle | Isle of Lewis | Outer Hebrides | Scotland
Ceann Hulavaig is the alternative name for Callanish IV which translates as ‘Head of Hula Bay’.Callanish IV is one of the lesser known and lesser visited sites out-with the main Callanish site.
It is unknown if Callanish IV was contemporary with Callanish I. The ancient people layed out Callanish IV as an ellipse ring which is shaped like a rugby ball. The ellipse is roughly 13m by 9.5m in length.
Five lichen covered Megaliths still stand in the present day from possibly five millennia ago. A gap in the west arc suggests a missing stone, it is likely there were more standing stones in the ellipse when the site was originally conceived, perhaps they are awaiting discovery in the future.
The type of stone the Megaliths are made of is Lewis Gneiss, these are around two tonnes in weight and between 2m and 2.7m high, the broad face of the stones faces into the interior. Three of the stones have pointed tops while the other two in the east section have flat tops.
The axis of Callanish IV align’s with the main Callanish site about one and a half miles away to the north west. Inside the circle is a 3.7m diameter round cairn of small boulders, a mini slab set on edge can also be seen. The sunken boggy interior is due to peat clearance in the 1850’s.
The ceremonial complex at Callanish is one of the finest in Scotland. Another example of a prehistoric complex is Kilmartin Glen in Argyll and Bute which is also very worth a visit for the casual tourist or dedicated Megalithomaniac.
Callanish IV is in the Garynahine area, twelve miles west of Stornoway which is the main town on the Isle of Lewis. Public access is granted and a short 200 meter walk from the B8011 road will take you to the circle. Callanish II and III stone circles are also close by.
