Tough Guise: Violence, Media & the Crisis in Masculinity
www.mediaed.org While the social construction of femininity has been widely examined, the dominant role of masculinity has until recently remained largely invisible. Tough Guise is the first educational video geared toward college and high school students to systematically examine the relationship between pop-cultural imagery and the social construction of masculine identities in the US at the dawn of the 21st century. In this innovative and wide-ranging analysis, Jackson Katz argues that widespread violence in American society, including the tragic school shootings in Littleton, Colorado, Jonesboro, Arkansas, and elsewhere, needs to be understood as part of an ongoing crisis in masculinity. This exciting new media literacy tool-- utilizing racially diverse subject matter and examples-- will enlighten and provoke students (both males and females) to evaluate their own participation in the culture of contemporary masculinity.

MEN & FEMININITY
oh, just another one of those sex negative double standards... everyday i'm tumblin' - lacigreen.tumblr.com be my fwend? http tweet me! - www.twitter.com A big thanks to Anna for making this video more accessible with English and French captioning! VIDEO SUMMARY In this video I talk about the aversion to femininity as expressed through product marketing, increased violence toward male bodied people who are feminine, and shaming of women who are very feminine. I urge everyone to question these notions and explore the sexist sentiments underlying them: that masculinity is more valuable and femininity is shameful. Do what you want, be what you will, and to hell with the gender police. ;)

SASHA GREY
“For my film portrait of Sasha Grey, I wanted to focus on her expressive and psychological transformation into a cinematic actor, separate from the cues that have associated Sasha with her previous career as a performance artist working within the adult film world.” –Richard Phillips
Shot on location at the John Lautner Chemosphere House off Mulholland Drive, the film showcases Sasha as a perpetually evolving figure. Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick (“Basic Instinct,” “Fatal Attraction,” “Wall Street,” “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps”) dressed Sasha for the part in an array of lingerie and military inspired garments to highlight the dual nature of her masculine / feminine persona. Looking over the roadside from the vantage point of one the most legendary residences in modern and cinematic history, Sasha reflects on her relationship to the San Fernando Valley landscape- the location of some of her most noted adult performances. Back inside the circular vortex of the Chemosphere, Sasha's inner dialogue projects an equally diaristic and imaginary self-portrait that pushes beyond the extremes of her past filmography and into her new future.
“Sasha Grey,” along with Phillip’s first short film, “Lindsay Lohan,” will be included in "Commercial Break," presented by the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture, Venice, Italy, June 1 - 5, 2011, concurrent with the 54th international exhibition of the Venice Biennale.

A Richard Phillips Film
Directed by: Richard Phillips and Taylor Steele Director of Photography: Todd Heater Costume Designer: Ellen Mirojnick Creative Director: Dominic Sidhu Art Director: Kyra Griffin Editor: Haines Hall Color mastering: Pascal Dangin for Boxmotion Music: Chelsea Wolfe
About Richard Phillips
Phillips’ strikingly distinctive paintings are drawn from found imagery that deal with the marketability of man, his wishes, ideas, actions, identity, sexuality, politics, and desires. Images he translates into drawings and then paintings executed through a traditional process. In doing so, he makes use of the iconic quality of pictures, which the media and art use daily – each according to its own agenda. Perhaps more so than any other contemporary painter of his kind, Phillips’ imagery has achieved a level of pop recognition outside of the artworld with fashion, media and film collaborations, including Gossip Girl, MAC Cosmetics, The Art Production Fund, Visionaire, and a recent guest judge appearance on Bravo’s new TV series “Work of Art: The Next Great Artist”. Phillips’ most recent exhibition, Most Wanted at White Cube in London, features ten larger than life celebrity portraits set against red carpet step and repeat backdrops.
Born in Massachusetts in 1962, Richard Phillips lives and works in New York City. He has exhibited extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe including Gagosian Gallery, New York; the Kunsthalle Zürich; Le Consortium in Dijon; Max Hetzler, Berlin; and White Cube in London.

Mater Suspiria Vision's "Seduction of the Armageddon Witches." Available in early June via Мишка Records as a limited 300 edition blue vinyl 7-inch.
"This is the first video of Mater Suspiria Vision that is not made by Cosmotropia de Xam
The theme that unites the whole story is the duality of humans: femininity and masculinity. Inherently, the video explores how to get a foothold in this present time: restoring the importance of femininity in men, and the importance to women in a society governed by the largest patriarchy, the Catholic Church.
The apple brings to mind "Adam and Eve". Rather than Satan's temptation for knowledge, this symbol for me has a special meaning of purity. The woman, or the female side, emerges victorious at the end of the video, because she can "mix" with this purity. While the man, because of his violence, is not able to hold the apple in his hands and destroys it. Also this purity is related with the mankind approaching to their animal side"
DIEGO BARRERA
"Extraordinary"
JONATHAN CAOUETTE
"This new video is written and directed by Diego Barrera and takes the themes of Mater Suspiria Vision to an exciting new level. Two of my personal favorite directors, Parajanov and Jodorowsky come to mind as we move away from CdX's appropriated cult-horror and into Barrera's vision which delves into the realm of Transcendental Cinema."
PENDU {EEUU}
"Taking pages from the books of Matthew Barney and Alejandro Jodorowsky and combining them with MSV's unique aesthetic, Spanish video artist Barrera crafted something haunting, beautiful, and foreboding."
MISHKA NYC {EEUU}
"in leuchtende Farben getauchten Tableaus, die barocken Altarbildern nachempfunden sind, interpretiert Barrera den Sündenfall der biblischen Schöpfungsgeschichte neu. Die verbotene Frucht ist auch hier ein Apfel, während Adam von einem gepiercten Jesus-Darsteller verkörpert wird und Eva wie eine Mischung aus Muttergottes, Lolita und Hexe gestylt ist."
SPEX MAGAZINE {GERMANY}
"Un lenguaje cargado de referencias religiosas que son distorsionadas ante historias surrealistas dentro de un halo de modernidad onírica. Con ciertos ecos a la propuesta de Iamamiwhoami, el video potencia la atmósfera nutriente de la composición, una extrañeza abrumadora que no dejará indiferente a nadie."

POP POP BANG
A collaboration between creative director Anna Burns and the photographer Thomas Brown. Through the use of various mediums the pair have curated an exhibition that explores the masculine world of B-Movies and juxtaposed it with the traditional British landscape. Using the themes of said movies – girls, guns and explosives – and twisting it against a very British backdrop these two challenge not only the premise of each subject but also the use of their chosen medias. The duo created a wall of umbrellas displaying elements of the classic B-Movie and located them within three landscapes – one being the forest, then London’s docklands and finally the grounds of Suffolk Manor house.

Cold Steel New AK-47: "Masculinity Perfected" by Nutnfancy
The original Cold Steel AK-47 knives were masculine: chunky blades with broad clip blades. They featured their older style of "Ultra-Lock" and handles were offered in 100% aluminum (7.6 oz) or steel-lined G10 (6.6 oz but more expensive). Examples I studied were often loose in lockup and definitely too heavy for this size/type of blade. I felt uncompelled to get one and my previous 10 initial tabletop review of the type sufficed for TNP. Enter 2010 and the re-designed AK-47 knives, full size and Mini. They represent huge improvement in the design. Utilizing strong NON-STEEL LINED G10 handles, they achieve lighter carry weights at 5.4 and 2.8 ounces respectively. Though no steel is present in these rounded and ergonomic handles, I expect high durability in use. This lightness alone is transformational to the design and for me opens upon POUs such as backpacking (especially for the Mini AK-47 blade). The new 2010 full size AK is a tactical folding knife with an improved blade ground, hollow grinding, razor sharpness, the Cold Steel wavable thumplate, and excellent deployment speed. The new Mini AK-47 has the same features in smaller form and makes a great EDC/Utility blade. Its pocket deployment capability is rare among lightweight, smaller EDC blades. The ambi clip is also improved: solid now with no "Wizard of Oz" issues noted. It holds strong, is low enough profile but still suffers from aggressive G10 underneath that will shred pocket fabric over time. I rec' performance ...

Pretty Masculine THE APP!!!!!! BY Mike Ruiz
Pretty Masculine is now available at the Mac App Store for iPad! - bit.ly NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED SONG - KDX 125 BY THE PETSHOP BOYS In his most recent iteration of the "Pretty Masculine" project, Mike Ruiz now delves further into his subconscious. As he continues to explore the inner recess of his psyche, "Pretty Masculine" extends out into the ethos and speaks to the photographer's digital audience, incarnated as an App. In so doing, we get to enjoy the fruits of his labor in a most palpable manner. This newest effort is more than a continuation of the "Pretty Masculine" printed book. The App is an all-encompassing experience, one that allows us to witness the full scope of the creative process. Through the App, we are able to visit with the artist at work. We are virtually side-by-side at the shoots with the models, learning about their varied and sometimes unexpected interests and goals. We also follow practically every creative step with the makeup and body-painting artists. As we navigate through this experience, we get to meet many of Mike's collaborators through behind-the scenes-footage and interviews. In some instances, we are also able to see many of the images come to life right before our eyes. We, with the touch of our tablet, are also able to interject our own creativity. This whimsical new App also allows us to upload and then manipulate our own images, and apply a variety of elements to our own photographs and hence, "Pretty Maculine-izing" the ...

This is a movie of an artwork called 'The Divine Masculine'. It is a representation of the Divine Masculine energy that is finally emerging again.
