DEVDAS - K. L. Saigal, Jamuna
Devdas (Saigal/Barua), son of a zamindar, and Parvati (aka Paro) (Jamuna), his poor neighbours daughter, are childhood sweethearts. Status and caste differences prevent their marriage and Devdas is sent to Calcutta while Paro is married of to an aged but rich widower. In Calcutta the hero meets the prostitute Chandramukhi (Rajkumari/ Chandrabati Devi) but remorse drives him to after and (after long train journey in which he attempts to run away from himself) he comes to die infront of his true loves house. Saratchandras classic novel which touched a sensative nerve with its implied criticism of the spinlessness of the fedual elite, later became a favourite source for films after Saigals influential performance. The weak and narcissitic hero, esp. as played by Saigal (confirmed by his major hit song Dukh ke din ab beetat nahin), later grew into a Wrether-type cult figure as the story, first filmed into the silent period by Naresh Mitra (1928) was remade in Hindi by Bimal Roy with Dilip Kumar (1955) and twice in Telegu (by Vedantam Raghavaiah in 1953 with A. Nagashwara Rao; and by Vijayanirmala in 1974 starring Krishna). The film has become a mythological reference point for Hindi melodrama: in Ramesh Saigals realist Phir Subah Hogi (1958), Raj Kapoor is taunted for being a Devdas and Guru Dutt used the story as an undercurrent both Pyaasa (1957) and Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959). Bimal Roys hypercative camera and sophisticated lighting techniques (e.g. the use of green filters to create a negative effect of black shy above white bushes and grass) contrasts with the static acting style, generating an uncanny emotional resonance reinforced by the dynamic, even destored editing. Baruas Hindi version is strictly a remake of the orginal Bengali in which Barua played the lead. This version was believed lost until a print was recently discovered in Bangladesh. Saigal who plays Devdas in the Hindi version, had a sensational walk-on part in the Benglai film as one of the visitors to a brothel, singing Kahare je jodtha chai and Golab juey uthuk phuttey. This was his Bengli debut and the procedures, unsure of his accent and whether a non Bengali singing Bengali songs would be acceptable to the audience, got the author Sarathchandras personal approval (as his argument in favour was apparently that Bengalis were not the only people who frequented brothels). Saigal later acted in several Bengali films at New Theatre Most contemporary critics mention the use of parallel cutting, suggesting this technique had a startling impact at the time. The montage of Devdas crying out in derilium, Parvati stumbling and then Devdas falling from his berth in the train, was described as a telepathic sequences, sometimes commended for its essential Indiannes in conveying fates dominion over individual destiny. Ritwik Ghatak admired the film greatly and often used it to teach film students about cinemtography. Loosely a Romeo-Juliet tyrpe story with both the leading stars in blisfully 'cupid' form. Dilip looking young and handsome, impish, daring and boyish. While Kamini Kaushal appears very innocent and alluring. The romance is close to life. The Direction of the film is excellent. The comical antics of David and others are very 1948ish. Looking closely we realize how much the eyes and body language can contribute to a film. Moral values hav changed since this film was made but the innocence, ignorance and reckless abandon of love still prevail. It has not yet aspired that a hero so boyish and lost like this young Dilip has appeared on the ndian screen. Its a Romeo Juliet style with spices extra!! PROFILE:- Dilip Kumar (December 11, 1922 - 87 years ) Dilip Kumar is regarded as arguably the greatest actor ever to grace the Indian silver screen. His performances have been regarded as the epitome of emoting in Indian Cinema. Though he has done all kinds of films - he balanced a lightweight Shabnam (1949) with the intense Andaaz (1949), the ultra-serious Daag (1952) with the swashbuckling Aan (1952), the heavy Devdas (1955) with the entertainer Azaad (1955), he is mainly remembered as the King of Tragedy. He was born in Peshawar (now Pakistan) as Yusuf Khan in a Pathan Family of 12 children who later moved to Maharashtra as fruit merchants. From being the assistant manager in an army canteen, he set up his own fruit stall. In Bombay, he was given his first break by Devika Rani, who cast him as the hero of Bombay Talkies Jwar Bhatta (1944). He attained stardom with Jugnu (1947) opposite singing diva Noorjehan. The success of Shaheed (1948) and Mela (1948), a Devdas type of film set Dilip Kumar off in a chain of films were he played a doomed lover - Andaaz (1949), which made him a superstar, Babul (1950), Jogan (1950), Deedar (1951), Udan Khatola (1955) and of course Devdas. But at times his heavy mannerisms acquired in his tragedy roles gave his characters a heavy-handedness that could be quite difficult to take - like in Devdas and particularly in the adaptation of Wuthering Heights - Dil Diya Dard Liya (1966). Playing mostly serious roles however began to take its toll on him and on psychiatric advice he switched over to do more light-hearted musical films and what's more actually appeared quite at home in them. (Azaad, and Kohinoor (1960) Mughal-e-Azam (1960) and Ganga Jamuna (1961) marked the peak of Dilip Kumar's career. But though his performance as Salim in the former has often been rated as among his best ever, he actually looks strangely uncomfortable in the film. Ganga Jamuna however was a flawless performance and perhaps the greatest of his career. His Bhojpuri dialect in the film was perfect and it was shocking he lost the Filmfare Award that year to Raj Kapoor for Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai (1960). He married actress Saira Bano in 1966 and was absolutely brilliant in the comedy Ram Aur Shyam (1967) essaying a double role and displaying razor sharp comic timing but his career ran out of steam in the 1970s. Taking a break from acting, he made a grand comeback in character roles with Manoj Kumar's Kranti (1981) and Ramesh Sippy's Shakti (1982) where his larger than life author-backed role confirmed his legendary status. It was yet another brilliant performance. To quote one of the writers of the film, Salim Khan..."We were amazed that he has given a whole new dimension to the character we had written. It happens very rarely that you have a competent script and the film goes beyond what you imagined...Dilip Kumar understood the character and enhanced it his own way."- published: 22 Aug 2013
