Blackburn monoplane Type D 1912
www.shuttleworth.org Robert Blackburn was born on the 26th March 1885 and became one of Britain's first aircraft designers and builders. His first aeroplane to fly did so at Filey in 1910 and he then produced several designs over the next two years. The basic 1912 machine was called the Mercury or the Type D monoplane. It was quite an advanced design for the time with all surfaces fully covered and an engine cowling around the top part of the engine. Although the design looks modern it still retains wing warping as the method of lateral control. The Collection's Blackburn monoplane was the seventh Mercury monoplane built. It was built in October 1912 to the order of Cyril Foggin, who learnt to fly at the Blackburn School at Hendon. It first flew in December 1912 in the hands of Harold Blackburn and was demonstrated by the company during the first part of 1913. Cyril Foggin first flew his new aeroplane on March 24 1913, but the aircraft was still used as a demonstration model by Blackburn. The aircraft was also used by Harold Blackburn to fly copies of the Yorkshire Post newspaper from Leeds to York between July 23-25 1913. The Blackburn Monoplane was then modified to have rounded wing tips and was fitted with a new design of undercarriage. It was then acquired by Montague Francis Glew, but he crashed the Blackburn at Wittering, Lincolnshire in 1914. The outbreak of the First World War led to the Blackburn being abandoned and forgotten. It was discovered in 1937 by Richard ...

Planes & Models Giant Scale 1909 BLERIOT mono plane.
This is a huge scratch built giant scale plane that was built right here in Israel. The plane is flying with a Gas engine Quadra 75cc with 24X12 wooden prop. The plane is a very slow flyer as you can see from the video. Built and designed by Yoav from Ein Yahav. Took 6 moths to built her.

Deperdussin 1910 Monoplane
This popular model of Deperdussin was produced in quantity and was a great improvement over the earlier Bleriot type machines. The Deperdussin had enough power and reliability to be able to make sustained cross-country flights and was also ideal for training. As such, Deperdussins equipped several flying schools. The Deperdussin had distinguished careers in the pre-war era as a training machine and also as a successful cross-country racer. One example came third in the 1911 Daily Mail Circuit of Britain contest. The Deperdussin type was available throughout the course of its life with several different engines, and seating arrangements. Versions of the Deperdussin were used by the military during 1912 and up to World War One. The Collections Deperdussin is believed to have been the 43rd example to have been built and was used at Hendon as a training machine until it was damaged. It was then put up for sale and was acquired by Mr. AE Grimmer who repaired the aircraft and flew it from the polo ground near Bedford. Richard Shuttleworth acquired the aircraft in 1935 and restored the aircraft to pristine condition at Old Warden. It flew again in 1937 and with only a period of storage during the Second World War has flown regularly since that time. The Deperdussin was featured in the film "Those Magnificent Men and their Flying Machines". As with most Edwardian aircraft the Deperdussin is very susceptible to weather conditions and so is only flown when conditions are just right ...

Blériot XI monoplane
½ scale Bleriot -- built by Roy Salter and flown by Dave Johnson. A short clip from the 1 hour 'Boys with Big Uns' DVD available at www.ModelAirplaneVideos.com Designed by Louis Blériot and Raymond Saulnier (of Morane-Saulnier), the original Blériot XI was a light and sleek monoplane constructed of oak and poplar. The flying surfaces were covered with cloth. The aircraft's original configuration included a REP engine spinning a four blade metal propeller which proved to be unsatisfactory. Blériot decided to use a basically simple 25 horsepower Anzani 3 cylinder radial engine with much better results.

Fairey Long Range Monoplane
In 1926 a proposal was made that the RAF should attempt a non-stop flight to India. This would not only be operationally significant, but enormously prestigious to the service if successful. It would at the same time establish a new world long-distance record. The chosen vehicle for this attempt was the Hawker Horsley, then entering RAF service as a day and torpedo-bomber. A production example was modified with strengthened landing gear to carry the additional weight of an extra 3955 litres of fuel accommodated in new wing and fuselage tanks. On 20 May 1927 Flt Lieut CR Carr (later Air Marshal Sir Roderick) and Flt Lieut LEM Gillman took off for India, only to be forced down in the Persian Gulf after completing 5504km: a new long-distance record that was beaten in less than 24 hours when Charles Lindbergh landed at Paris after his 5778km solo flight across the North Atlantic. Two later but unsuccessful attempts were made with the Horsley. Consequently the Air Ministry decided to obtain a purpose-built long-range aircraft to make a new attack on the record: the Fairey Long-Range Monoplane was the result. A clean, high-wing cantilever monoplane of low wing loading, it was of composite construction and fabric-covered. The high-efficiency wing, which incorporated a triangulated-tube internal bracing system devised by Hollis Williams, also contained tanks for more than 4546 litres of fuel. In this aircraft (J9479) Sqd Ldr AGJones-Williams and Flt Lieut NH Jenkins flew from ...
