Durga Narayan Bhagwat (1910–2002), popularly known as Durga Bhagwat was an Indian scholar, socialist and writer. Sophocles
Sophocles ( Sophoklēs, his name was very likely pronounced ; (c. 497/6 BCE - winter 406/5 BCE) was the second of the three ancient Greek tragedians whose work has survived. His first plays were written later than those of Aeschylus and earlier than those of Euripides. According to the Suda, a 10th century encyclopedia, Sophocles wrote 123 plays during the course of his life, but only seven have survived in a complete form: Ajax, Antigone, Trachinian Women, Oedipus the King, Electra, Philoctetes and Oedipus at Colonus. For almost 50 years, Sophocles was the most-feted playwright in the dramatic competitions of the city-state of Athens that took place during the religious festivals of the Lenaea and the Dionysia. Sophocles competed in around 30 competitions; he won perhaps 24 and was never judged lower than second place; in comparison, Aeschylus won 14 competitions and was defeated by Sophocles at times, while Euripides won only 4 competitions.

Majha (Punjabi: ਮਾਝਾ, ماجھا; Hindi: माझा ''Mājha'') is a region of the Punjab comprising the modern districts of Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Tarn Taran in the Indian State of Punjab and the districts of Narowal, Lahore and Kasur in the Pakistani Province of Punjab. The term previously applied to Panjabis living north of the Sutlej. Historically, Majha comprised the older settled parts of the Bari Doab (in particular Sheikhupura) and the Rechna Doab (in particular, Gujranwala), the newer settled parts belonging to the ''canal colonies''. Major towns in the region include Amritsar, Batala, Majitha, Sri Hargobindpur, Dera Baba Nanak, Qadian, Pathankot, Rawalpindi, Gurdaspur, Narowal, Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib Gujranwala, Sialkot, Wazirabad, Gujrat, and Tarn Taran Sahib. The people of Majha are known as 'Majhis' or 'Majhhis'.
The largest part of Majha called the ''Bari Doab''. It lies between two of the five great rivers of the Punjab: the Ravi and the Beas(Ba- For Beas, and -ri for River Ravi). As such, Majha lies in the heart of the ancient Punjab region. No wonder then, that one meaning of Majha is 'the central plains' or 'the central country'.

Purushottam Laxman Deshpande () (8 November 1919 – 12 June 2000) was a Marathi writer from Maharashtra, India. He was popularly known by his initials ''पु. ल. ("Pu. La.")''.
Deshpande was also an accomplished film and stage actor, music composer, harmonium player, singer, and orator.
Biography
Purushottam was born on 8 November 1919 in Gaodevi area (Krupal Hemraj Chawl) in Mumbai to Laxman and Lakshmibai Deshpande. His then family moved Vile Parle before finally settling in Pune for work purposes.Purushottam received his college education at Fergusson College in Pune and Willingdon College in Sangli. On 12 June 1946, he married Sunita Thakur, an accomplished author herself. She is most known for her book "''Aahe Manohar Tari''". She acted in some of his plays in the past. They had no children.
For some years, Purushottam worked as a college professor in Belgaum in Northern Karnataka and as a school teacher before embarking on his career in writing, multiple fields of acting, directing, and composing music in the world of movies. As regards his stint as a college professor Deshpande was to write later that his job was to create hate for Marathi language instead of love for it.This was more an attack on the system of education than on the teaching job itself.
He also worked for Doordarshan - the state owned TV and was deputed to BBC in UK for a year long training. After which he spent some time in France and also what was then West Germany. It was this period and stays that his travelogue "Apurwai" is based upon.
Purushottam took lessons in playing harmonium from Dattopant Rajopadhye of ''Bhaskar Sangitalaya''. He was proficient in Hindustani classical music and was an accomplished music director and singer. Being a proficient writer, he wrote screenplays, lyrics and directed music for several Marathi films.
On 12 June 2000, he died of Parkinson's disease in Pune aged 80 .
A park in Pune city ( the city which he had adopted as home town) has been named after him.
Literary accomplishments
Deshpande was a prolific writer and produced numerous original works as well as adaptations of works from other languages into Marathi. He preferred to identify his Marathi adaptations of plays and novels in other languages as ''bhawanuwad'' (भावानुवाद), meaning "adaptation of the essence". Most of his writings are deeply rooted in Marathi language which some consider as his command over the language while some others consider it as a shortcoming. He is best known for his wit and his detailed observation and ability to put it succinctly. He was awarded a Sahitya Academy award for his book "Vyakti Ani Valli".

Vilasrao Dagadojirao Deshmukh () (born May 26, 1945), popularly known as Vilasrao is the current Minister of Science and Technology and Minister of Earth Sciences. He has previously held the posts of Minister of Rural Development and Minister of Panchayati Raj, Government of India and Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Government of India. He is member of Rajya Sabha representing Maharashtra. He was also a two-time Chief Minister of Maharashtra, from 1999 to 2003 and from 2004 to 2008. He is a member of the Indian National Congress and originally belongs to Latur district in the Marathwada region of the state of Maharashtra.
Early life and family
Deshmukh was born on May 26, 1945 in Babhalgaon in the Latur district. He graduated with a degree in Science (B.Sc.) and Arts (B.A.) from M.E.S Abasaheb Garware College, (Pune University) and went on to study law (L.L.B.) from the ILS Law College (Pune University). He started social activities in his early youth with particular interest in drought relief work. He was elected as the Director of the Osmanabad district Central Cooperative Bank and also of the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank in 1979.His wife is Vaishali Deshmukh, and he has three sons from her, Amit Deshmukh who is a MLA of Latur city, Ritesh and Dheeraj. His son Ritesh Deshmukh is an actor in Bollywood movies.
He has one younger brother Diliprao Deshmukh, who is a MLC and served as Minister of Relief, Rehabilitation, Sports, Youth Welfare and Protocol. in the Maharashtra Government.
Political career
Deshmukh entered active politics and became member of the Babhalgaon Village Panchayat from 1974 to 1979 and its Sarpanch (village chief) from 1974 to 1976. He was a member of Osmanabad Zilla Parishad and Deputy Chairman of Latur Taluka Panchayat Samiti (Latur District Panchayat Committee) from 1974 to 1980.As a President of Osmanabad District Youth Congress from 1975 to 1978, he worked for the implementation of Five Point Programme of the Youth Congress. He organised the youth in Osmanabad district and became President of District wing of the Indian National Congress.
He was Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1980 to 1995 winning 1980, 1985 and 1990 elections. During this period, as the Minister of State and the Cabinet Minister, Deshmukh handled departments such as Home, General Administration, Cooperation, Public Works, Transport, Legislative Affairs, Tourism, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development Fisheries, Industry, Rural Development, Education, Technical Education, Sports and Youth Welfare,
He has been a minister in various governments in Maharashtra from 1982 to 1995 holding portfolios of revenue, cooperation, agriculture, home, industries and education.
He lost the elections in 1995 with a margin of 35,000. He was re-elected to the State Legislature from Latur Constituency in the elections held in September 1999 with a strong comeback winning with a margin of nearly 91,000 in two successive election, the highest in Maharashtra. He took oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on October 18, 1999. He was Chief Minister till 17 January 2003, but had to step down in January 2003 and make way for Sushilkumar Shinde, a prominent Dalit member of Congress, following factionalism in the state unit of the party.
He was re-elected to the State Legislative Assembly from Latur Constituency in the Elections held in October 2004.
He took oath of Chief Ministership for the second time on November 1, 2004. In this position he was condemned by the Supreme Court for interference in shielding MLA Dilip Kumar Sananda and his family from money lending complaints by poor farmers.
In the aftermath of the November 2008 Mumbai attacks, he took the moral responsibility and offered to resign, which was then accepted by the party.
He subsequently entered the Rajya Sabha and was appointed to the Council of Ministers as Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 28 May 2009.
He was appointed as Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises on 19 January 2011 cabinet reshuffle. Later on he was appointed Minister of Rural Development.

Foreign Tour
Deshmukh had an opportunity to visit Japan, Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan and Hong Kong in 1980, to study Cooperative Movement in Amsterdam, Netherland and Agricultural Development. He also visited West Germany, France, England, United States and Japan in 1981. As the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, he led an official delegation in May 2000, to U.S.A. and UK and visited New York, Los Angeles, San Jose, Washington and London to interact with the investors to bring investment to Maharashtra.
Manjra Project
From April 1995 to October 17, 1999, Vilasrao kept himself engaged in expansion of the Manjra Co-op. Sugar Mill. The Mill established a world record in 1994-95 and in 1997-98 by crushing the highest quantity of sugarcane . It has won 34 awards on national and international level for excellence in production and management .
Educational activities
Deshmukh founded the Manjra Charitable Trust which runs a number of colleges in Latur & Mumbai. Some of them are Manajara Ayurvedic Medical College & Hospital Latur, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology at Versova, Andheri in Mumbai and Sushiladevi Deshmukh Vidyalaya at Airoli, Navi Mumbai. His interests include reading, classical music, volleyball and table tennis.
Mumbai Cricket Association
On 15th July 2011 Deshmukh was elected President of the Mumbai Cricket Association (2011-onwards). In the election he closely beat former cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar.

Mastani (died 1740) was the wife of ''Peshwa'' Baji Rao I (1699–1740), an Indian general and prime minister to the fourth Maratha ''Chhatrapati'' (Emperor) Shahuji. She is said to have been a beautiful and brave woman.
Biography
Mastani was a daughter of a Hindu, Maharaja Chhatrasal (1649–1731), of Bundelkhand province, and was borne by his Persian Moslem wife. When a Mughal chief from Allahabad, Mohammad Khan Bangash, invaded Chhattrasal’s kingdom during 1727-28 and imprisoned him and his family, Chhattrasal sent a secret message, seeking help, to Baji Rao, who happened to be on a military campaign in the vicinity of Bundelkhand. Bajirao came to the rescue of Chhatrasal, defeated Bangash's army, and restored Chhatrasal to his throne. In gratitude, Chattrasal gave Bajirao his daughter Mastani, and also a third of his kingdom, including Jhansi, Sagar and Kalpi. He also gave 33 lakh gold coins to Bajirao, which was a huge amount in those days.Mastani is often referred to as Bajirao's concubine or mistress. However, she was his lawfully wedded wife. Mastani gave the Peshwa two sons, on whom their father bestowed the jagir of Banda. True to their blood the two brothers fought on the side of the Marathas in the third Battle of Panipat in a.d. 1761 between Ahmed Shah Abdali and the Marathas and one of them is said to have been killed in the battle.
Mastani was a skilled horse-rider, and she accompanied Baji Rao on his military campaigns. According to legends, she was skilled in spear-throwing and swordsmanship. She was also a talented dancer and singer. Both Mastani and Baji Rao's wife, Kashibai, bore sons to Baji Rao within a few months of each other. Kashibai's child died at an early age. Mastani's child was named Shamsher Bahadur.
However, Baji Rao's love for his half-Moslem wife Mastani, and neglect of Kashibai angered his mother, Radhabai. In deference to Radhabai, Baji Rao's brother, Chimnaji Appa, tried to send Mastani into exile. Baji Rao's son, Balaji, also tried to coerce Mastani into leaving his father, but she refused. Enraged by her growing influence on Baji Rao, and Baji Rao's neglect of Kashibai, Balaji had Mastani placed under house arrest for a time, while Baji Rao was on military campaign. Mastani lived for some time with Baji Rao at his palace of Shaniwar Wada in the city of Pune. The palace's north-east corner held Mastani Mahal and had its own external doorway called Mastani darwaza. Because of his family's intolerance of Mastani, Baji Rao later built a separate residence for Mastani at Kothrud in 1734, some distance away from Shaniwar Wada. The site still exists at the mrutyunjay temple on karve road. Court records (Bakhars) during Bajirao's regime specifically never included any reference to her. Historians have determined that the paintings of Mastani in both Raja Kelkar museum and Wai museum are not authentic.
Death
In April 1740, while Baji Rao was inspecting his lands at Khargon, he suddenly became ill and died. Baji Rao's wife Kashibai, his brother Chimnaji Appa, his son Balaji (Nanasaheb), and Mastani came to Khargon. Bajirao's mortal remains were consigned to flames on 28 April 1740, at Raver Khed on the banks of the Narmada River. Mastani died at Pabal Village near Pune, soon afterwards.
Cause of death
According to popular folklore, Mastani committed suicide after hearing about Bajirao's death, by drinking poison from a ring which she was wearing. Others say that she jumped into the funeral pyre of her husband and committed sati. No documentation is available to confirm the actual cause. However it is accepted that she did not live long after Bajirao's demise and died in 1740.
Mastani's grave
Her grave is in Pabal. It is called ''Mastani's Samadhi'' and is maintained by Mr. Inamdar.Kashibai took Mastani's six-year-old son Shamsher Bahadur (also named as Krushnarao) into her household and raised him as one of her own. Shamsher grew up into a formidable warrior and fought in the Third Battle of Panipat in 14/1/1761 against Ahmed Shah Abdali. Durani, alongside his half-cousin Sadashivrao Bhau and his half-nephew Vishwasrao, Nanasaheb's son. Shamsher Bahadur, barely 27 at the time, lost his life along with Sadashivrao Bhau and Vishwasrao in that battle. Shamsher Bahadur's son, Ali Bahadur, ruled over Baji Rao's lands in Bundelkhand, and founded the state of Banda, Uttar Pradesh.
Mastani in popular culture
The story of Baji Rao and Mastani was made into a motion picture, ''Mastani'', directed by Dhirubhai Desai, and released in 1955. Sanjay Leela Bhansali announced in 2003 that he wanted to make a film titled "Bajirao Mastani", but he has indefinitely postponed the project. A Marathi serial, "Rau", was produced in the 1990s, based on a Marathi book of the same name by historical novelist N. S. Inamdar about the life story of Baji Rao and Mastani. Currently a daily serial is being broadcast on ETV Marathi by the name, Shrimant Peshwa Bajirao Mastani.Local lore in Pune believes that while in Pune, Mastani used to go for her bath to a lake (created by Bajirao specially for Mastani on Pune - Saswad Road) with her entourage. That lake still exists there.
