Walter Cronkite hosts Silicon Valley: A One Hundred Year Renaissance
Silicon Valley Historical Association - www.SiliconValleyHistorical.org - Walter Cronkite hosts the 1998 documentary, Silicon Valley A One Hundred Year Renaissance, produced by the Santa Clara Valley Historical Association. This fascinating film visually captures the origins and essence of America's hi-tech Shangri-La. More than a history of computing, this program shows how the mecca of computer technology caused a fundamental shift in American society, a transformation similar to the advances which occurred during the Renaissance. Viewers are introduced to the inventors, scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs whose visions created the Silicon Valley phenomenon and its limitless consequences for the future. Fred Terman, the founder of Silicon Valley, Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard of Hewlett-Packard Company, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak of Apple Computer, and Scott McNealy of Sun Microsystems are just a few of the pioneers who talk about their contributions on camera. Broadcast on PBS stations nationwide. To order the documentary, please visit: SiliconValleyHistorical.org

Information Theory Today: ECE Lecturer Series
Founded by Claude Shannon in 1948, information theory has taken on renewed vibrancy with technological advances that pave the way for attaining the fundamental limits of communication channels and information sources. Increasingly playing a role as a design driver, information theory is becoming more closely integrated with associated fields such as coding, signal processing and networks. In this talk, Sergio Verdu reviews the current research trends in the field as well as some of its longstanding open problems. Sergio Verdu is the Eugene Higgins Professor of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University where he teaches and conducts research on information theory. He was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 1992 and a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 2007. He received the 2000 Frederick E. Terman Award from the American Society for Engineering Education and the IEEE Third Millennium Medal in 2000. In 2005, he received a Doctorate Honoris Causa from the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya. He is the recipient of the 2007 Claude E. Shannon Award and the 2008 IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal. In 1998, Cambridge University Press published his book Multiuser Detection. His papers have received several awards: the 1992 IEEE Donald Fink Paper Award, the 1998 Information Theory Outstanding Paper Award, an IEEE Information Theory Golden Jubilee Paper Award, the 2000 Paper Award from the Japan Telecommunications Advancement Foundation, the 2002 Leonard G. Randy Komisar: The Valley Absorbs Failure
Innovation is not a monopoly of Silicon Valley, says venture capitalist Randy Komisar. But entrepreneurship as a profession, he notes, is practiced best on KPCB's home turf. Here, failure isn't personal, and it is tolerated for approximately 70 percent of the businesses that launch here. The Valley offers a unique understanding that Plan A is often flawed and that failure is a necessity for true innovation, and thus it offers the space for smart and inventive people to reassess and move on to the next venture. This key difference that has evolved over the past 70 years, says Komisar, is what has made Silicon Valley thrive. View more clips and share your comments at ecorner.stanford.edu

Software Patent Debate
[Recorded: August 24, 2011] THE MOTION: SOFTWARE PATENTS ENCOURAGE INNOVATION Proponents of software patents argue that software deserves the protection of patents just as any other invention does. Software is simply a description of computer instructions that allow a processor to perform complex tasks. Particularly in today's knowledge economy, the value of software is growing and patents protect the investment of time, effort, and money made by companies and individual programmers. Critics of software patents argue that they stifle innovation rather than promote it by cutting off the free flow of ideas needed to advance technology. Software consists of mathematical equations, which cannot and should not be patentable. Most software patents describe algorithms that are simple or obvious to a programmer of ordinary skill and thus do not deserve patent protection. FOR THE MOTION Bob Zeidman is the president and founder of Zeidman Consulting, a premiere contract research and development firm in Silicon Valley that focuses on engineering consulting to law firms about intellectual property disputes. Clients have included Apple Computer, Cisco Systems, Cadence Design Systems, Facebook, Intel, Symantec, Texas Instruments, and Zynga. Bob is also the president and founder of Software Analysis and Forensic Engineering Corporation, the leading provider of software intellectual property analysis tools. Bob has worked on and testified in nearly 100 cases involving billions of dollars ...

Secret History of Silicon Valley
[Recorded: November 20, 2008] Today, Silicon Valley is known around the world as a fount of technology innovation and development fueled by private venture capital and peopled by fabled entrepreneurs. But it wasn't always so. Unbeknownst to even seasoned inhabitants, today's Silicon Valley had its start in government secrecy and wartime urgency. In this lecture, renowned serial entrepreneur Steve Blank presents how the roots of Silicon Valley sprang not from the later development of the silicon semiconductor but instead from the earlier technology duel over the skies of Germany and secret efforts around (and over) the Soviet Union. World War II, the Cold War and one Stanford professor set the stage for the creation and explosive growth of entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley. The world was forever changed when the Defense Department, CIA and the National Security Agency acted like today's venture capitalists funding this first wave of entrepreneurship. Steve Blank shows how these groundbreaking early advances lead up to the high-octane, venture capital fueled Silicon Valley we know today.
