[more]Many people from western culture might say that learning Chinese (Mandarin) is very difficult. It is probably because of Chinese character which is called "Hanzi" in Chinese. Chinese characters are not like any other languages in the world, as most of them are pictographs, which mean they are from pictures. They seem really interesting and beautiful, but you have no idea how to pronounce a single word. But don't worry! There are two wonderful devices for you to make learning Mandarin much easier and more interesting: They are Pinyin and Tone. In this Session, We will learn Pinyin and Tone and how they work in Mandarin pronunciation of Chinese language, so that you will be ready to read and learn any words, phrases and sentences in Chinese with your knowledge of Pinyin and Tone

Peter Kingsley: Complete Interview
Groundbreaking scholar of pre-Socratic philosophy Peter Kingsley emphasizes the sacred role of Western civilization in global oneness. Drawing from his personal experiences with Parmenides and Empedocles: foundational figures of Western civilization whose mystical dimensions have been forgotten or ignored, Peter maintains that to approach oneness authentically, Western civilization must rediscover its own sacred origins and purpose, and asks, how can Western culture participate in the harmony of oneness if it has forgotten its own note?

Niall Ferguson: The 6 killer apps of prosperity
www.ted.com Over the past few centuries, Western cultures have been very good at creating general prosperity for themselves. Historian Niall Ferguson asks Why the West, and less so the rest? He suggests half a dozen big ideas from Western culture -- call them the 6 killer apps -- that promote wealth, stability and innovation. And in this new century, he says, these apps are all shareable.TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Aqueous Transmission - Incubus
Aqueous Transmission by Incubus 4-10-2011 * People seem to not understand that this is a compilation of about 3 videos that had nothing to do with each other or this song. I simply edited the 3 together laying this track over to create a music video, for fun.* This is meant to be a contrast between Eastern and Western cultures. The song is clearly of oriental influence and it's very fluid and melodic. This comes across in the Eastern video. On the other hand, Western culture is reflected in a shaky camera which is anything but fluid. In the Eastern video, the shots are of individuals who happen to be alone but the Western video shows a woman who is lonely among crowds. Tradition is very important in one culture whereas the other prides the progressive (notice the iphone). I thought it would be interesting to specifically not show the main character but to show what he is seeing on his trip and what he has left behind (his "lover," notice there is no wedding ring on her finger). SOURCES: 1.The man wielding the sword was involved with the movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Find out more here: www.vimeo.com 2. Woman: vimeo.com 3. The final source was used in such a small amount that I'm not going to link to it.

North Korean film exposes Western propaganda - Part 1 of 10
'Propaganda' (95min) - Part 1 Full film now available: www.youtube.com Here is the formal statement I gave to Federal Police on 16 June 2012: On a trip to visit family in Seoul in April, I was approached by a man and a woman who claimed to be North Korean defectors. They presented me with a DVD that recently came into their possession and asked me to translate it. They also asked me to post the completed film on the Internet so that it could reach a worldwide audience. I believed what I was told and an agreement was made to protect their identities (and mine). Despite my concerns about what I was viewing when I returned home, I proceeded to translate and post the film on You Tube because of the film's extraordinary content. I have now made public my belief that this film was never intended for a domestic audience in the DPRK. Instead, I believe that these people, who presented themselves as 'defectors' specifically targeted me because of my reputation as a translator and interpreter. Furthermore, I now believe these people work for the DPRK. The fact that I have continued to translate and post the film in spite of this belief does not make me complicit in their intention to spread their ideology. I chose to keep posting this film because - regardless of who made it - I believe people should see it because of the issues it raises and I stand by my right to post it for people to share and discuss freely with each other. Sabine I have translated this film, laid in the ...

Alan Watts - Death
The speaker of this highly enlightening video on death is Alan Watts (1915 - 1973). A philosopher specialising in the Ancient teachings of the Far East, Dr Watts was instrumental in introducing Eastern philosophy to Western culture during the 1960s. Nevertheless, it is important to understand that Alan Watts was not attempting to replace our Western religions with those of Asia; as this would simply be replacing one form of grasping with another and in Eastern philosophy grasping is a cause of suffering. Unfortunately all that is made available on the subject of death in our Western culture is our outdated religious ideologies and wishful thinking. Yet most of us intuitively recognise "Life after death" is an oxymoron; making this very down-to-earth lecture by Watts a breath of fresh air. As it is commonly observed in Nature and illustrated by the Yin-Yang motif, every aspect of Nature has a equal and corresponding opposite. Therefore it is highly unlikely our current awareness would be directly followed by more of the same. It seems logical that any period of awareness would be followed by an equal period of non-awareness. Initially non-awareness may be confused with darkness or isolation and very much feared. Nevertheless, we already experience periods of non-awareness during dreamless sleep and meditation; yet these encounters with 'Emptiness' are the most relaxed and stress free periods we ever experience. It is little wonder 'empty mind meditation' is often referred ...

Dr. Niall Ferguson - Part 1 - April 2, 2012
The rise to global predominance of Western civilization is the single most important historical phenomenon of the past five hundred years. All over the world, an astonishing proportion of people now work for western-style companies, study at Western-style universities, vote for western-style governments, take Western medicines, wear Western clothes, and even work Western hours. Yet six hundred years ago, the petty kingdoms of Western Europe seemed unlikely to achieve much more than perpetual internecine warfare. It was Ming China or Ottoman Turkey that had the look of world civilizations. How did the West overtake its Eastern rivals? And has that zenith of Western power now passed?

Alan Watts - Who Guards the Guards?
This is my personal tribute to the man I believe to be the world's greatest philosopher, Alan Watts. The late Dr Watts was one of last century's most widely read philosophers, introducing Eastern philosophy to a Western audience in the 1960s. Nevertheless Watts' wisdom is timeless and often seems more relevant today than it was 40 years ago. Watts was instrumental in achieving a major shift in Western thought, which up to that time had very little understanding of Relativity as it had been revealed by quantum physics. His interpretation of Dharmic philosophy was often the first time Westerners were introduced to the notion that all perceptions were merely a function of mind. Nonetheless, it is important to understand that Alan Watts was not about replacing our Western religions with those of Asia; as this would only be replacing one form of grasping with another and in Eastern philosophy grasping is the cause of suffering. Dr Watts' goal was to simply introduce his audience to their deeply entrenched beliefs, by contrasting these often-unquestioned assertions against those of another culture. This process can be very liberating; since this is often the first time that one becomes aware of the possibilities that lay beyond our unrecognised, well-indoctrinated social paradigms. In this lecture Alan Watts warns his audience of the dangers of micromanagement. This is frequently seen in our society as excessive security and unnecessarily obstructive bureaucracy. Watts explains ...

SMILES FROM OFF THE ROAD
blog.chinmaya-dunster.com Walk away from any road in India for a day or so, and you will find people who are still untouched by Western values. people who seem to love life; who still have the humanity to welcome strangers; who still have time to smile. Western society seems to be in a crisis of greed, crime, alcohol and drug abuse, obesity and depression. Perhaps we have something to learn?
