Wrestling in the Russian Republic of Dagestan
Almost every child in Dagestan is involved in wrestling, which plays an important role in their upbringing. "If the parents tell us their children are failing school then we may expel them from wrestling. There could hardly be a stricter punishment for children than a ban on attending training, so we maintain contact with parents and that helps us to control children's school results", said Mejid Magomedov, senior coach of the Gamidov wrestling school. Sydney 2000 Olympic champion Sagid Murtazaliev, who is now the head of Dagestan's pension fund, confessed that if it was not for sport he would have never achieved his high political state. And if he had not been so successful in wrestling he would not have been able to help the sports champions of tomorrow. "Wrestling has helped me to become a respectable person, strengthened my will and character and taught me to respect both elders and juniors. I will be devoted to that until the end of my days. Helping to develop wrestling is my holy duty in the face of Allah and kids who want to follow my path. When I was a child, I was often hungry because my family had nothing to eat. I don't want today's children to train on empty stomachs", said Sagid Murtazaliev. The 2004 Olympic champion Gaydarbek Gaydarbekov excelled in Dagestan's second-favorite martial art -- boxing. He admitted that his youth spent high in the Caucasus Mountains was a key to his pride as an athlete. But now, a resident of a big city, Gaidarbek Gaidarbekov ...

Mysterious Giant Sinkhole Appears in Dagestan, Russia Republic
On Thursday, January 19, 2012, locals were recorded staring into a giant sinkhole in the Republic of Dagestan, which is a republic of Russia. Strange sounds seemed to be emanating from the sinkhole, reminiscent of the sounds commonly referred to as "UFO sounds" or "sounds of the Apocalypse" that began escalating in popularity in 2011 and reached a crescendo in January 2012. W a l k / video / 3.01 min., colour, silent / Dagestan, 2010
The mountains of the republic of Dagestan resemble the American can- yons glorified by the Hudson School masters. A grand spectacle is charged with latent irony. The expressive means of XIX century painting are not employed for the sake of ecstatic pleasure from the sublime, but rather to establish the ultimate distance between the viewer and the character. This space pulls the gaze in, erasing differences and details. A still camera assists to notice a figure walking along the edge of the abyss; it is Taus herself. Hardly visible, the figure dissolves in background, forcing us to peer in search for the human presence against the backdrop of the indifferent nature. There is no meeting between the observer and the walker. They are too far apart from each other, and that is what creates the artistic effect: the world of the artwork holds within itself both the distant and the imminent, the colossal and the unapparent, the human and the world.

R e k h e n ( avar language flock) / video / 7.21 min., colour, silent / Dagestan / 2009
Rekhen was shot between the mountain villages of Tsada and Ahalchi, in the republic of Dagestan. It has a simple narrative: a young man is wearing a traditional sheepskin coat called a Timug that is usually worn by shepherds. The man attempts to scramble as close as possible to the flock of sheep. Literal interpretation of this work is concerned with local nature or traditional cultural symbols. It has a supportive function to the content of the work- “What is the goal behind performers actions?”
The work deals with the problems of social relations, which demand consent with certain rules and regulations for social and cultural integration. Is it about what we are ready to do in order to beсome a part of community? What choices do we need to make for this to happen!? Are we ready to wear a heavy and highly uncomfortable (from a modern perspective) garment and get down on all fours?

Hidden War In The Land Of Mountains
The War in the North Caucasus is officially over. In 2002 President Vladimir Putin has declared that the war in Chechnya was over.
Several years later the Chechen republic elected pro-Moscow president Akhmad Kadyrov and today the region is developing by leaps and bounds with strong support of federal government. and budget.
But the conflict lead to the war in the latest 90s is still alive. It transformed to hidden war resulting from time to time in terrorist attacks in Moscow and other cities.
The insurgency shifted out of Chechnya to the nearby Russian territories, such as Ingushetia and Dagestan.
According to experts the constant number of active insurgents fighting in the mountains is close to 500.
While large-scale military operations have been reduced guerrilla warfare continues throughout the entire North Caucasus.
Only in 2011 350 insurgents were killed during counter-insurgency operations.
The conflict become more complicated in comparison to the Chechen one.
The main factor provoking that is overwhelming corruption in Dagestan and Ingushetia
Islam fundamentalists propagandize extensively and their ideas find fertile ground.
The population disenchanted with the corrupted authorities and its impunity. The law doesn't work in Dagestan, justuce system is ruled by nepotism.
People can't find justice and truth here and Islam fundamentalists offer them another model of the society - Shari'a.
More and more people convert to Salafism. The pace of Islamisation grows every year and the conflict between West and East is spread before the eyes.
Some of Salafi people decide to fight military, police forces and authorities. Those who associated with lawlessness and corruption.
Every year the Russian government spends huge resources and money to fight the insurgents.
Killings, blows, kidnappings, counter-insurgency operations, stories of violation and injustice became usual news in the region.

miracle of islam in baby (dagestan, russia)
Qur'anic verses have reportedly appeared on the body of a nine-month old boy named Ali from the Russian Republic of Dagestan. www.apa.az Since his birth, birthmarks in the form of Arabic script have been appearing on Ali's body. First, there were individual letters but then texts began appearing, the Russian-language Vesti news channel quoted his parents as saying on Thursday. "First, there was a hematoma on his chin. When the bruise went off, we saw the word "Allah," Ali's mother Madina Yakubova said. Surprisingly, one of the baby's legs has an inscription, "Allah is the creator of all entities." The TV channel reported that Ali was first diagnosed with "ischemic heart disease of the second degree" and "infantile cerebral paralysis" in the maternity clinic. However, after the inexplicable events began happening, he was examined again and found healthy. The incident has been drawing hundreds of Dagestani Muslims to Ali's home everyday, prompting local authorities to guard the house round-the-clock.

Tom Barton- Running the Gauntlet in Dagestan pkg
The daily life of policeman in Russia restive southern republic of Dagestan is a dangerous one, struggling as they are with the region's Islamist insurgency. I travelled to the town of Kizilyurt, west of the capital Makhachkala where a car bomb had been set off two days before, wounding seven policeman. In this report I examine that difficult job.
