Mississippian revolt against the Spaniards
The Mississipians and related cultures/trading partners would later come across with Spanish explorers of the Juan Pardo expedition, who built a base there in 1567 called Fort San Juan. Expedition documentation and archaeological evidence of the fort and Native American culture both exist. The soldiers were at the fort about 18 months (1567--1568) before the natives killed them and destroyed the fort. (They killed soldiers stationed at five other forts as well; only one man of 120 survived.) Sixteenth-century Spanish artifacts have been recovered from the site, marking the first European colonization in the interior of what became the United States. Between the years 1500-1600 most Mississippian societies lived in a type of society called a chiefdom. Chiefdoms are kin-based societies in which people are ranked according to the family they belong to. Some families have higher status than others. In chiefdoms, the ruler typically comes from a high-status family and has privileges beyond those of ordinary people. Chiefs share some similarities with kings but are not as powerful (they do not collect taxes, for example, or have standing armies). Archaeologists interpret Arkansas Mississippian societies as chiefdoms from descriptions by the de Soto chroniclers in the 1500s and from the archaeological remains of earlier Mississippian societies. A platform mound, for example, provides a prominent, elevated location for the chief's house that is separated from ordinary houses. A ...

Viking Battle - Vikingos Guerreros
Swedish Vikings, Sweden - Excibiciòn Simulaciòn de una batalla de guerreros vikingos en Suecia. The name "Viking" was first used by foreign authors in the 11th century AD. Its origin is probably the Swedish word for bay, "vik". This shows the close connection between the people and the sea, of which they were totally dependent for their livelihood. They had a mythology of their own. Their gods were called "asar", The Vikings are often considered wild, drunken, merciless robbers. In fact, their main occupation was farming and trade. The Viking expeditions were mostly trade expeditions that sometimes degenerated to looting. But to be honest, there were also expeditions whose main purpose was to loot foreign coastal regions. The Swedish Vikings There is a distinction between "Swedish" and "Danish/Norwegian" Vikings. The Danish and Norwegian expeditions went westwards, concentrating on Western Europe and England. The Swedish, on the other hand, went mostly eastwards into modern-day Russia and further on to Byzantium and the Caliphate. Runestones and archaeological artefacts found in eastern Sweden and on the island of Gotland show that the trade exchange between eastern Sweden and the Near East was very intense at this time in history. These expeditions often started from trade centres like "Birka", situated on an island in Lake Mälaren, not far from modern-day Stockholm. The Vikings also settled in the Russian town of Novgorod, which they called "Holmgård". As time went by ...

Dominican Rising
A birth of a nation and the patriost who have and will alway protect it. The island of Hispaniola was inhabited by the Taínos, an Arawakan-speaking people, who may have arrived around AD 600, displacing earlier inhabitants. The Taínos lived in villages headed by chiefs and called the island Kiskeya or Quisqueya that meant "highest land" also Ayti and Bohio.By 1492 they were divided into five chiefdoms (cacicazgos in Spanish, from cacique, chief). There are widely varying estimates of the population of Hispaniola in 1492, including 100000300000 3 million, and 7-8 million. They engaged principally in farming and fishing, as well as hunting and gathering. SPANISH RULE: Christopher Columbus landed at Môle Saint-Nicolas on December 5, 1492, in his first voyage, and claimed the island for Spain. Nineteen days later, the Santa Maria ran aground near the present site of Cap-Haitien; Columbus was forced to leave 39 men, founding the settlement of La Navidad. He returned to Spain, voyaging back to America three more times. After initially friendly relations, the Taínos resisted the conquest. One of the earliest leaders to fight against the Spanish was the female Chief Anacaona of Xaragua, in the southwest, who married Chief Caonabo of Maguana, in the center and south of the island. The two fought hard against the Europeans; she was captured by the Spanish and executed in front of her people. Other notables who resisted include Chief Guacanagari, Chief Guamá, and Chief Hatuey, who later ...

Cameroon/Cameroun
The Republic of Cameroon / République du Cameroun is a unitary republic of central and western Africa. It is bordered by Nigeria to the west; Chad to the northeast; the Central African Republic to the east; and Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo to the south. Cameroon's coastline lies on the Bight of Bonny, part of the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. The country is called "Africa in miniature" for its geological and cultural diversity. Natural features include beaches, deserts, mountains, rainforests, and savannas. The highest point is Mount Cameroon in the southwest, and the largest cities are Douala, Yaoundé, and Garoua. Cameroon is home to over 200 different ethnic and linguistic groups. The country is well known for its native styles of music, particularly makossa and bikutsi, and for its successful national football team. English and French are the official languages. Early inhabitants of the territory included the Sao civilisation around Lake Chad and the Baka hunter-gatherers in the southeastern rainforest. Portuguese explorers reached the coast in the 15th century and named the area Rio dos Camarões ("River of Shrimp"), the name from which Cameroon derives. Fulani soldiers founded the Adamawa Emirate in the north in the 19th century, and various ethnic groups of the west and northwest established powerful chiefdoms and fondoms. Cameroon became a German colony in 1884. After World War I, the territory was divided between France and ...

The Celtic invasion of Greece
Gallic groups, originating from the various La Tène chiefdoms, began a south-eastern movement into the Balkan peninsula from the 4th century BC. Although Celtic settlements were concentrated in the western half of the Carpathian basin, there were notable incursions, and settlements, within the Balkan peninsula itself. From their new bases in northern Illyria and Pannonia, the Gallic invasions climaxed in the early 3rd century BC, with the invasion of Greece. The 279 BC invasion of Greece proper was preceded by a series of other military campaigns waged toward southern Balkans and against the kingdom of Macedonia, favoured by the state of confusion ensuing from the intricated succession to Alexander. A part of the invasion crossed over to Anatolia and eventually settled in the area that came to be named after them, Galatia. Both historians who relate the attack on Delphi, Pausanias and Junianus Justinus, say the Gauls were defeated and driven off. They were overtaken by a violent thunderstorm which made it impossible to manoeuvre or even hear their orders. The night that followed was frosty, and in the morning the Greeks attacked them from both sides. Brennus was wounded and the Gauls fell back, killing their own wounded who were unable to retreat. That night a panic fell on the camp, as the Gauls divided into factions and fought amongst themselves. They were joined by Acichorius and the rest of the army, but the Greeks forced them into a full-scale retreat. Brennus took ...

The two main Boruca communities, Boruca and Curre, have a combined population of approximately 2200 people. Back in the day, the ancestors of the modern Boruca made up a group of chiefdoms that ruled most of Costa Ricas Pacific coast, from Quepos to what is now the Panamanian border, including the Osa Peninsula. Now the majority of the Boruca tribe lives on the Reserva Indígena Boruca. This reservation is located in the canton of Buenos Aires in the Puntarenas Province. The reservation extends 138.02 Km2 in the Talamanca mountains. Although agriculture was the traditional means of subsistence, like their ancestors the modern Boruca are known for their art and craftwork, especially weaving and their distinctive painted balsa wood masks. The Boruca Indians Southern Costa Rica
The Boruca are an indigenous people living in Costa Rica. The tribe has about 2000 members, most of whom live on a reservation in the Puntarenas Province in southwestern Costa Rica. The ancestors of the modern Boruca made up a group of chiefdoms that ruled most of Costa Rica's Pacific coast, from Quepos to what is now the Panamanian border, including the Osa Peninsula. Like their ancestors the Boruca are known for their art and craftwork, especially weaving and their distinctive painted balsa wood masks, which have become popular decorative items among Costa Ricans and tourists. These masks are important elements in the Borucas' annual Danza de los Diablitos ceremony, celebrated every winter since at least early colonial times. The Danza depicts the resistance of the "Diablito", representing the Boruca people, against the Spanish conquistadors.

2010 bees for babar progress report, part 2
Visit www3.telus.net to learn more about Bees for Babar BfB provides rotary credit to villagers to install hives around subsistence farms near the Mole wildlife reserve in Ghana. When elephants attempt to raid crops they will upset trip-wired hives. The bees will drive off the elephants preserving both the crops and the elephants (who might otherwise be poached by enraged farmers). Partial script of this video: Most secondary roads in Ghana are packed dirt-- making a 120 kilometer trip that would take an hour or so on a good paved North American road an all-day affair of 8-9 hours. This limits access to markets reducing the availability of incoming goods and potential buyers of outgoing produce. Rabi and Ali's vehicle suffered damage on-route that illustrates how a lack of developed infrastructure poses hurdles and hazards to development work in rural areas of West Africa. Where you don't have access to the internet actual human contact remains the basis for social networking. As in many parts of the world shaking hands with all participants is an important part of the beginning and ending of most gatherings. In most parts of Ghana the traditional greeting of a chief includes a genuflection and/or nodding of the head (sometimes accompanied by a gentle, rhythmic clapping of the hands). Chiefdoms remain important socio-political units for coordinating the distribution and use of land in rural Ghana.

"Before contact with Europeans, the Mississippian Period in Southeast North America was a time of great communities, abundant trade, and agricultural gains surpassing European efforts. The people built large earthen mounds as platforms for homes and temples, and managed larges tracts of land for agriculture and hunting. Warfare also affected the lives of many men of the chiefdoms. All Indian men considered themselves warriors and trained to use the bow and war club.It is a time and culture that will be forever changed with the arrival of Europeans. It is 1491©. "

A message to all Swede's!!!
@ oysterbar, grand central station 2010 Swedes (Swedish: svenskar) are a Scandinavian people, mostly inhabiting Sweden and the other Nordic countries, with descendants living in a number of countries. Until the 9th century, the Scandinavian people lived in small Germanic kingdoms and chiefdoms known as petty kingdoms.[17] The Germanic tribe of the Swedes (Swedish: svear; Old Norse: svíar) lived in Svealand, bordering the Geats to the south. The consolidation of Sweden was a long process, and later, as Sweden's borders fluctuated over the centuries, so did the use of the Swedish language as well as Swedish self-identification. The Swedish-speaking minority in Finland (finlandssvenskar) trace back to the many centuries when Finland was an integral part of Sweden. Their identity and relation towards Swedish and Finnish identities is a subject of discussion.[18][19][20] Other groups have acquired Swedish identity; until 1658, when Scania became a possession of the Swedish Crown, the Scanians were a people of the Eastern Province of Denmark speaking a dialect belonging to the East-Danish dialect group.[21] Similarly, groups like the Walloons settled in Sweden already in the 17th century, followed by many other groups in later periods. There are also several million people with Swedish ancestry in the United States and Canada following the large-scale emigration of the late 19th and early 20th century.
