Al Ghazali - The Alchemist of Happiness - Documentary Trailer
bu Hāmed Mohammad ibn Mohammad al-Ghazzālī (1058 -- 1111) (Persian: ابو حامد محمد ابن محمد الغزالی), known as Algazel to the western medieval world, born and died in Tus, in the Khorasan province of Persia (modern day Iran) was a Persian[5] Muslim theologian, jurist, philosopher, and mystic. Ghazali has sometimes been referred to by historians as the single most influential Muslim after the Islamic prophet Muhammad.[6] Besides his work that successfully changed the course of Islamic philosophy—the early Islamic Neoplatonism developed on the grounds of Hellenistic philosophy, for example, was so successfully refuted by Ghazali that it never recovered—he also brought the orthodox Islam of his time in close contact with Sufism.[6] The orthodox theologians still went their own way, and so did the mystics, but both developed a sense of mutual appreciation which ensured that no sweeping condemnation could be made by one for the practices of the other.

Islamic Art and Culture in the Renaissance—The True Moor of Venice
Michael Barry, the Patti Cadby Birch Consultative Chairman, Department of Islamic Art, MMA, presents this examination of the mysterious central figure in one of the most enigmatic paintings of the Italian Renaissance, Giorgiones "Three Philosophers" (Venice, 1504). The discussion of this work, which is now in the Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna, sheds light on the role that Islam and Islamic philosophy played in late medieval and early Renaissance European perceptions. Alim Winter Program 2007: Sherman Jackson
The American Learning Institute for Muslims Winter Program is a 4-day intensive study of one of many traditional Islamic sciences in the context of the modern American paradigm. The Winter Program was designed to meet the apparent need for a shorter intensive program focused on specialized themes. This program targets those who cannot make the Summer Program because of time commitment and those alumni who want more exposure to the ALIM learning philosophy throughout the year. This program rotates across the United States. For 2006, the program will be held at New York University, in New York, New York and the theme will be "The History & Development of Islamic Thought". This year's Winter Program will be a critical overview and analysis of the historic development of Islamic Intellectual Thought. The broad and diverse issues that captured the attention of the Muslim community after the death of the Prophet (SAW) will be examined with the purpose of deriving valuable lessons for Muslims living in the Post-Modern world. This course is an interactive format and students will be free to question and encouraged to participate in the discussion. In order to fully grasp the concepts that will be covered, ALIM will explore these issues through the subjects of : - Islamic Theology - Islamic Philosophy - Early Shisms - Sufism - Islam and Modernity Islamic law will not be dealt with as a separate subject in this course as it has already been covered extensively in previous Winter ...

Reviving The Muslim Mind [Launch Event]
www.thedeeninstitute.com Event Format Emre Kazim (Co-founder & Senior Lecturer): Islamic thinking within the historical traditions and the impact they had on the Muslim community and the modern era. Adam Deen (Co-founder & Executive Director): The challenge to Muslim minds in current times and the affect this has had on the Muslim community. Yusuf Ahmet (Director of Operations): The future steps that need to be taken in order to revive critical thinking within the Muslim community. Press Release: As people of faith, Muslims often struggle to find balance between the intellectual and ethical principles contained within their faith and the demands of the modern world. The Deen Institute aims to contribute to "articulating faith in a contemporary world", helping to equip students with the necessary tools to arrive at an informed perspective in their relationship with all facets of modern life. As an organisation, it seeks to articulate faith, not in spite of, but through scientific inquiry, critical thinking and logical reasoning, reviving intellectuality among modern Muslims. Adam Deen, Co-Founder and Director of the Institute, explains: "People of faith are viewed in some quarters as uneducated, blindly and unquestioningly following outmoded ideologies, which they have not chosen, but rather inherited. The Deen Institute is about challenging that view, about emphasising that faith is the result of rigorous critical thinking and intellectual thought." Through dialogue and ...

Was Guru Nanak Muslim? Part 1 - Questions for Sikhs
Please subscribe, "like", share freely and join our "basics of Sikhi" FB group. This is the first of a 4-part series negating the arguments made by some Islamic preachers that the founder and first Guru of the Sikhs, Dhan Guru Nanak Dev ji, was actually a (secret) Muslim, ie, followed Islam. Part 1 introduces the series, looks at Guru Nanaks early life and his gaining of Guruship. Part 2 will look at Guru Nanaks trips to Mecca and Medina. Part 3 will look at Guru Nanak's revelations (philosophy and theology) and Part 4 will look at Guru Nanak's passing on the light to the second Guru, Dhan Guru Angad Dev ji, and examine the rationality behind the people who claim Guru Nanak to be a Muslim. ---- With Gurus grace, the 'Questions for Sikhs' series will be aiming to answer common questions put to Sikhs, whether in a spirit of enquiry or with malicious intentions. These videos serve as an educational tool for both Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike, yet will aim to avoid criticising any faith. -- Music credits - www.thekdp.com - Vaheguru Simran by Jagdeep Kaur (Jam 2 - track 6)

See our catalog of lectures at www.IslamOnDemand.com After thoroughly addressing the first dimension of Islam in his first four lectures of this series, Abdal Hakim uniquely explores the final two dimensions in Islam of iman and ihsan. This talk, which consists of two parts, is another highly intellectual discourse about a vast religious science. The speaker begins by providing a historical background in an effort to identify the processes that brought this science about. This lecture effectively paints a colorful picture of the nature of the spiritual life in Islam and examines its foundation. What does the Qur'an say about these two types of higher knowledges, imam and ihsan? How does the Muslim come to know God if He cannot be seen? And what about the early Islamic controversies of free will vs. predestination and the existence or "problem" of evil? How does Islam answer the age-old philosophical questions of why the world exists and what the purpose of life is? (Recorded at the Dar al Islam Teachers' Institute seminar). Other topics discussed Emanuel Kant, the 99 names of God ...

Al-Ghazali: Imam of Intelligentsia
Indeed, definitely without a doubt, (fo'sho!), a should watch. A mind-boggling intellectual journey. Here, the talk was about The Critical Importance of Imam Ghazali & The Ihya Ulumiddin in Our Times, and astonishingly was began with a Bob Marley quote. Masha Allah. Abū Ḥāmed Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Ghazālī (1058 -- 1111); (Arabic:ابو حامد محمد ابن محمد الغزالی), known as Al-Ghazali or Algazel to the Western medieval world, was a Persian Muslim theologian, jurist, philosopher, and mystic. Ghazali has sometimes been referred to by historians as the single most influential Muslim after the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Others have cited his movement from science to faith as a detriment to Islamic scientific progress Besides his work that successfully changed the course of Islamic philosophy—the early Islamic Neoplatonism developed on the grounds of Hellenistic philosophy, for example, was so successfully refuted by Ghazali that it never recovered—he also brought the orthodox Islam of his time in close contact with Sufism. The orthodox theologians still went their own way, and so did the mystics, but both developed a sense of mutual appreciation which ensured that no sweeping condemnation could be made by one for the practices of the other. Dr. Annemarie Schimmel Speaks about Iqbal's Philosophy of KHUDI
Iqbal's Philosophy of Khudi teaches man to develop his own qualities, his own personality, his good qualities, in such a way that step by step he will come closer to the greatest ego the comprehensive ego, God, in which our smaller egos contained like pearls in the oceans and the closer he comes to God the more he can understand him and the more he becomes perfected ********************** Annemarie Schimmel(April 7, 1922 -- January 26, 2003) was a well known and very influential German Orientalist and scholar, who wrote extensively on Islam and Sufism. Early life Schimmel was born to Protestant and highly cultured middle-class parents in Erfurt, Germany. Her father, Paul, was a postal worker and her mother, Anna belonged to a family with connections to seafaring and international trade. Schimmel remembered her father as "a wonderful playmate full of fun", her mother made her feel she was the child of her dreams and her home as full of poetry and literature, though her family was not an academic one.[1] She began studying at the University of Berlin in 1939 at the age of 17, during the period of Nazi Germany. She received a doctorate in Islamic languages and civilization at the age of 19. Following this, she was drafted by the German Foreign Office while continuing with her scholarly work in her free time.
