Anita Rose Morris (March 14, 1943 – March 2, 1994) was an American actress, singer and dancer.

Career[link]

Among many roles, Morris's most prominent film role was as Carol Dodsworth, the mistress to Danny DeVito, in Ruthless People and for her sensual performance as Carla in the musical Nine opposite Raul Julia. While nominated for a Best Featured Actress Tony Award as Carla, she lost to Liliane Montevecchi, also in Nine. 21 years later, Jane Krakowski won the Tony Award in the same category as Morris, playing Carla in a revival with Antonio Banderas.

Her signature number in Nine was "A Call from the Vatican", and she also sang "Simple", late in act two. She was scheduled to perform the former at the Tony Awards in 1982, but the TV censors found her outfit too revealing. Her stage work began in the American Mime Theatre, and carried her to Broadway both for Nine, Jesus Christ Superstar, "See Saw", "The Magic Show", (cast album & video/DVD) "Sugar Babies" (replacement for the "Soubrette" originated by Ann Jillian) and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

Morris portrayed the lover of Rob Lowe in 1984's The Hotel New Hampshire. Other film work included Bloodhounds of Broadway with Madonna, Randy Quaid, and Matt Dillon, Ruthless People with Danny DeVito and Bette Midler, 18 Again! with George Burns, Absolute Beginners with David Bowie, and Charlie Schlatter and Radioland Murders, which was her final film role.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, she played guest roles in sitcoms and dramas, including Miami Vice, Who's the Boss?, Murder, She Wrote, Cheers, Melrose Place, Matlock, Tales from the Crypt and A Different World. In 1984, Morris appeared in The Rolling Stones' music video "She Was Hot".

She is the mother of actor James Badge Dale and was married from 1973 to actor Grover Dale. She died in Los Angeles, aged 50, after a long struggle with ovarian cancer, which was first diagnosed in 1980.

Raúl Rafael Juliá y Arcelay (March 9, 1940 – October 24, 1994) was a Puerto Rican actor.

Born in San Juan, he gained interest in acting while still in school. Upon completing his studies, Juliá decided to pursue a career in acting. After performing in the local scene for some time, he was convinced by entertainment personality Orson Bean to move and work in New York City. Juliá, who had been bilingual since his childhood, soon gained interest in Broadway and Off-Broadway plays. He performed in mobile projects, including the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre.

Juliá was eventually noticed by Joseph Papp, who offered him work in the New York Shakespeare Festival. After gaining notoriety, he received roles in two television series, Love of Life and Sesame Street. For his performance in Two Gentlemen of Verona, he received a nomination for the Tony Award and won a Drama Desk Award. Between 1974 and 1982, Juliá received Tony Award nominations for Where's Charley?, The Threepenny Opera and Nine. During the 1980s, he worked in several films, receiving nominations for the Golden Globe Awards, for his performance in Tempest, and Kiss of the Spider Woman, winning the National Board of Review Award for Best Actor for the latter.

In 1991 and 1993, Juliá portrayed "Gomez Addams" in two film adaptations of The Addams Family. In 1994, he filmed The Burning Season and a film adaptation of the Street Fighter video games. Later that year, Juliá suffered several health afflictions, eventually dying after suffering a stroke. His funeral was held in Puerto Rico, being attended by thousands. For his work in The Burning Season, Juliá won a posthumous Golden Globe and Emmy Award.

Early life and education[link]

Juliá was born in Floral Park, a subsector of San Juan, to Olga Arcelay and Raúl Juliá. He was the oldest of four brothers and sisters.^[1] His mother was a mezzo-soprano who sang at a church choir before marrying Juliá's father, who was an electrical engineer graduated from Tri-State University.^[2] Some relatives were also musicians, including his great aunt María González, whom he credited as the inspiration behind his artistic career.^[3] The family was Catholic.^[1] Raúl's father was the founder of "La Cueva del Chicken Inn", a restaurant in San Juan.^[2] The building was originally a gas station and body shop, before being remodeled after a similar restaurant in Madrid, Spain, called "Las Cuevas de Luis Candelas", which is intended to mimic the structure of a gypsy cave. Juliá's father claimed that he brought pizza to Puerto Rico, after he hired an Italian cook in New York City that could prepare pizza.^[2] The restaurant is also supposed to be the first to distribute chicken-in-a-basket within the archipelago.^[2]

Since the beginning of his primary education, Juliá was enrolled in Colegio Espíritu Santo in Hato Rey, a Catholic private school,^[4] where most of the personnel spoke exclusively English.^[3] There he participated in his first play in first grade, interpreting the devil, with his performance earning him participation in all subsequent school plays.^[5] After witnessing Errol Flynn's performance in The Adventures of Robin Hood, he decided to pursue an acting career. During his childhood, Juliá's family followed a strict Jesuit practice, often bringing homeless children into their household.^[6] His mother received a recognition from the Catholic University of Ponce due to these efforts.^[6] When he was in seventh grade, Juliá was able to speak English fluently and had gained interest in the works of William Shakespeare. Juliá concluded his secondary education at Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola, where he would organize plays of Julius Caesar, Hamlet, King Lear, and The Tempest.^[7] Seeking to please his parents, he continued his university education spending a year at Fordham University, before returning to Puerto Rico, where he attended the University of Puerto Rico, becoming a member of Phi Sigma Alpha Fraternity.^[8] Throughout this timeframe, Juliá continued acting in local plays and nightclubs.^[7] He studied liberal arts, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. Juliá eventually realized that he had no interest in pursuing a law career, which was favored by his parents, choosing to act full time despite having doubts if he could sustain his needs working as an actor.^[7]

Acting career[link]

NYSF and the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater[link]

Consequently, Juliá began performing in several plays that were held in San Juan. He performed in a recount of Macbeth, which was held in one of the municipality's colonial castles in order to emulate the setting of the work.^[9] Other works included playing the role of Roderigo in Othello at a local drama production. Parallel to this, Juliá began making presentations at the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. After joining a musical group named the "Lamplighters", despite receiving opposition from his parents, he was recruited by Lillian Hurst to perform alongside her, eventually receiving work at a hotel named El Convento.^[10] During this time, he began considering the possibility of moving to Europe to take acting classes. During one of their acts, Juliá was approached by Orson Bean, who was on vacation in Puerto Rico, who provided him with contact information, wanting him to travel to New York and work there.^[10] His parents were shocked by the proposal, but ultimately agreed to support his decision.^[10] However, Juliá's departure was postponed after his younger brother, Rafael, died in a traffic collision. During this timeframe, he became engaged to Magda Vassallo Molinelli.^[11]

In 1964, when he was 24 years old, he traveled to New York, arriving in the middle of a winter storm. After establishing residence in Manhattan, Juliá had to do several odd jobs to pay for his expenses, going as far as receiving training on the proper way to sell pens for a distributor.^[12] When Hurst visited him, both attended a Broadway play and the fact that he could work as an actor fulltime surprised him.^[13] As a result of this, Juliá began seeking employment in both Broadway and "Off Broadway" plays. Seeking to further improve his acting. He received lessons from Wynn Handman, who was recommended by Bean.^[13] His first work was a reenactment of Pedro Calderón de la Barca's Life is a Dream, where he played Astolfo. This allowed him to receive the Actors Equity card from Actors' Equity Association.^[14] Initially, Juliá received allowance from his parents, but after contracting Jeff Hunter as manager, he was able to perform in a staging of Bye Bye Birdie, declining further donations.^[14] He began performing with Phoebe Brand's mobile theatre, presenting plays in poor areas of New York. In 1965, he married Vassallo Molinelli.

In 1966, Juliá was cast for the role of Macduff in a Spanish version of Macbeth and performed in The Ox Cart, a stage play written by Puerto Rican play writer René Marqués.^[15] Miriam Colón Valle, who also participated in La Carreta, established the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre, where he performed. In 1967, the founder of the New York Shakespeare Festival (NYSF), Joseph Papp, attended a performance at Delacorte Theater, where Juliá was reading patriotic Puerto Rican poetry.^[16] Subsequently, Papp offered him the role of Demetrius in a staging of Titus Andronicus.^[17] After this play concluded, he contacted Papp who offered him the role of role manager in NYSF's Hamlet. While performing this task, Juliá also performed in some of the plays.^[18]

Broadway and television[link]

In September 1968, after auditioning four times for the role, Juliá debuted in his first Broadway play, performing as Chan in a staging of The Cuban Thing.^[19] The following year he received a role in a reenactment of Arthur Kopit's Indians. During this timeframe, he divorced from Vasallo Molinelli. In 1970, Juliá received the role of Paco Montoya in The Castro Complex, receiving favorable reviews for his performance.^[19] While rehearsing for an Off Broadway play, he met Merel Poloway, forming a relationship with her.^[20] As he gained notoriety in Broadway, Juliá received roles in two television series, Love of Life and Sesame Street. He disliked the role given to him in Love of Life and only appeared on the show for a brief time.^[21] His Sesame Street character, Rafael the Fixit Man, was a recurring character during the show’s third season. Between 1971 and 1972, Juliá received roles in The Organization, The Panic in Needle Park, and a film adaptation of Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me.^[21] While working in Sesame Street, Papp contacted him and offered the role of Proteus in Two Gentlemen of Verona. For his performance in this play, Juliá received his first nomination for a Tony Award and won the 1972 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance.^[21] In 1973, he interpreted Edmund in King Lear. This was followed by the role of Orlando in As You Like It.^[22] Juliá noted that he cherished the roles played during these Shakespearian plays, particularly the rhythm, music, and poetry present in them.^[22] He also acted in Via Galactica's limited presentation in Broadway and, in television, played Dr. Greg Robinson, Jerry's brother, in the "Oh, Brother" episode of The Bob Newhart Show. In 1974, he was cast in the lead role of Where's Charley?, playing Charley Wykeham . Juliá received his second Tony Award for his performance in this comedy.^[22] He subsequently joined Erhard Seminars Training or "est", an organization that promotes self-motivation, by participating in its seminars.^[23] In 1976, Juliá played Mack the Knife in The Threepenny Opera, interpreting the dialogue with a marked British accent.^[24] The performance earned him a third Tony Award nomination. He followed this performance with a turn as Italian car racer Franco Bertollini in The Gumball Rally.

That same year Juliá married Poloway in the Catskill Mountains.^[25] The ceremony was led by Swami Baba Muktananda as part of a spiritual retreat. The couple had met the Swami through Werner Erhard, founder of "est".^[25] After this retreat, Erhard founded "The Hunger Project", claiming that after traveling to India, he felt motivated to found a non-profit organization to eliminate world hunger through philanthropic galas.^[25] Juliá joined the initiative since its conception, establishing a personal goal of raising one million dollars for the organization. In 1978, he accepted the lead role in Dracula, receiving a good reception for his interpretation of the character.^[26] While performing as Dracula, Juliá also played Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew. The interaction with co-star Meryl Streep was tense at first, before developing into a friendship as the production advanced.^[26] Juliá then accepted a role in a film adaptation of The Tempest, spending several months in Italy while exploring its culture. While in the country, he received the script of Nine for which he received his fourth Tony Award nomination.^[27] In preparation for his role in Betrayal, Juliá moved to London temporarily, hiring a coach to adapt his accent to the English dialect.^[28]

Acting in Hollywood[link]

In 1982, Juliá played Caliban in the musical One from the Heart.^[29] In 1983, his first son, Raúl Sigmund Juliá was born. That year he also starred in the public television film Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, which received a weak reception and was satirized on Mystery Science Theater 3000. After not appearing in a film for two years, Juliá played a political prisoner named Valentín in an adaptation of Manuel Puig's Kiss of the Spider Woman.^[29] Considering that the script was unique, he agreed to begin filming before receiving his salary and traveled to South America, where he interviewed rebels and ex-prisoners to familiarize himself with their experiences and ideology.^[30] Upon its release, the film was a commercial success. For his performance, Juliá received a nomination for the Golden Globe Award and won the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures' award for best actor along co-lead actor William Hurt.^[31] The following year, he appeared in his first Puerto Rican film, La Gran Fiesta, offering a monologue near the end of the film.^[32] In 1985, he starred as Major Sergius Saranoff in an adaptation of Arms and the Man. This was followed by the role of David Suárez in the romantic comedy Compromising Positions. In 1986, Juliá played a hairdresser named Joaquin Manero in The Morning After. To prepare for the role, he took lessons and worked at a hair salon for some time.^[32]

In 1987, Juliá had the lead role in The Penitent. Later on that year, his second son, Benjamín Rafael Juliá, was born.^[33] In 1988, Juliá played a corrupt official in Moon over Parador, but the movie received negative reviews from critics.^[34] The following year, he co-starred with Anthony Quinn in Onassis: The Richest Man in the World, a biographic film covering the life of Aristotle Onassis. In 1989, Juliá was cast as Archbishop Óscar Romero in the biographical movie, Romero. During his life, Romero had been an advocate of civil rights, often denouncing violations of these rights in public, which prompted his assassination during a mass. Juliá accepted the role based on its political nature, seeking to draw attention to the issues in that Central American region.^[34] To prepare for the role, he read Romero's diary and autobiography as well as listening to or watching recordings of his messages and masses, which prompted him to rejoin the Catholic Church. Due to this and Poloway's Jewish religion, the couple decided not to raise their children in a particular religion, believing that they should make their own decision after growing older. The government of El Salvador refused to allow distribution of the film because of its content, so that the film received only clandestine circulation.^[35] Due to his activity between 1987 and 1989, Juliá was ranked first in Variety's "List of Busiest Hollywood Actors".^[33] Julia then starred in the film adaptation of The Threepenny Opera, recreating the role of Macheath in the movie, which was renamed Mack the Knife for its American release.

In 1990, he was cast to play a lawyer in Presumed Innocent, receiving solid reviews for his performance.^[36] Prior to the filming, Juliá spent time in court rooms and studied the court system.^[36] In 1991, when Papp died, Juliá commented that the director was directly responsible for finding him roles besides that of "stereotypical Latinos" such as that of the "Latin lover".^[37] Juliá was cast to play Gomez Addams in an adaptation of The Addams Family. He was attracted to the role because of the character's irreverent portrayal, noting that "even his depressions are wonderful."^[38] Since his earlier recollections of the role were those from the Spanish-dubbed version of the first television series, he had to adapt the role directly from the original cartoons drawn by Charles Addams, receiving a nomination for a Saturn Award. In 1992, Juliá played Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha with Sheena Easton, a Broadway adaptation of Miguel de Cervantes' classical novel. The play had originally begun in 1965, with the main character being played by one of his favorite actors, José Ferrer.^[39] Juliá performed this role eight times per week. Subsequently, he reprised his role as Gomez Addams in Addams Family Values.^[39] In 1994, Juliá participated in his only project for HBO, playing Chico Mendes in The Burning Season, for which he received solid reviews.^[40] He familiarized himself with the role by analyzing interviews and footage from Mendes' Xapuri Rubber Tappers' Union, being impressed by the subject's actions.^[28]

Illness and death[link]

In early 1994, while filming The Burning Season in Mexico, Juliá contracted food poisoning after consuming sushi.^[41] The condition worsened, since he had undergone stomach surgery a few months earlier for an infection which was rumored to be stomach cancer. Juliá was airlifted to Los Angeles and received medical attention. He recovered and returned to Mexico to finish the movie, but he lost several pounds and was physically weakened by his condition.^[42] Despite his poor health, he completed The Burning Season and was eager to continue his plans and play M. Bison in Street Fighter to be filmed in Australia that spring. Juliá felt that this film would allow him to spend more time with his children, who were fanatics of the video game franchise and helped him prepare for the role.^[43] He received his second Saturn Award nomination for this performance which was considered the high point of the otherwise poorly received movie. This would be his final role in a major film, with his last work being a supporting role in the TV drama film Down Came a Blackbird which was filmed in Washington state during September and October 1994.

On October 16, 1994, Juliá and Poloway attended the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. After attending the play, he was supposed to meet Marcos Zurinaga, a Puerto Rican director who filmed the Argentine/Puerto Rican coproduction Tango Bar.^[44] However, Juliá began feeling an intense abdominal pain and had to be carried by ambulance to North Shore University Hospital on Manhasset, Long Island, New York. He was initially not worried by the issue, reviewing the script for his intended role in Desperado from his hospital bed, but his condition worsened.^[44] Later that night, Juliá suffered an unexpected stroke. The condition continued worsening and he fell into a coma on October 20, 1994, and was put on life support.^[45] Four days later, on October 24, 1994, Juliá died due to terminal complications from the brain hemorrhage.^[45] He was 54 years old. Despite the fact that he had been in ill health since 1991, which was speculated by the public to be from stomach cancer to other rare ailments, the underlying and unifying cause of his illness and unexpected death has never been revealed to the public.

Following previous instructions, his body was transported to Puerto Rico. A state funeral was held in San Juan on October 27, 1994, with Juliá being escorted to the building of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, where a funeral ceremony was held.^[46] This activity was attended by thousands of Puerto Ricans, with plena being played in the background. The burial ceremony was also attended by thousands of spectators, with La Borinqueña being sung by Lucecita Benítez prior to the procession.^[47] After stopping at San Ignacio de Loyola Church, the procession advanced to Buxeda Cemetery, where Rubén Berríos offered the final words. As Juliá's coffin was lowered, a load of carnations was dropped from a helicopter, while the crowd shouted ¡Viva Puerto Rico Libre!.^[48] Juliá was a lifelong supporter of the Puerto Rican independence movement; on one occasion, he convinced his agent to allow him to do an advertising campaign on behalf of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

Subsequent memorial ceremonies were held at Joseph Papp Public Theater in New York and in Los Angeles, where several actors and personalities, including Rubén Blades and Edward James Olmos, expressed their grief.^[49] A church mass in Miami and numerous private ceremonies were also held. The staff of Universal Pictures paid homage to him by dedicating Street Fighter in his memory, adding the phrase "For Raúl. Vaya con Dios" in the film's ending credits. Juliá was set to reprise his role as M. Bison in the video game version of the Street Fighter film, having already met with the production staff. The New York Shakespeare Festival paid to have an obituary in Variety, where his birth and death dates were accompanied by a Shakespearean quote.^[50] The Puerto Rican Traveling Theater established free acting classes to young actors, which were named The Raúl Juliá Training Unit.

For his performance in The Burning Season, Juliá posthumously won a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Cable Ace Award, and an Emmy Award. Although he did not make his screen debut before 1950, Juliá was a nominee for the American Film Institute's AFI's 100 Years…100 Stars.^[51] Actors such as Helen Hunt and Jimmy Smits have quoted him as a source of inspiration.^[52][53] On November 21, 1994, Rudy Giuliani declared that date "Raúl Juliá Day".^[54] In 1996, he was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame on Broadway.^[55] The Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce created the Raúl Juliá Scholarship Fund in 1997, intended to provide college education for teenagers.^[56]

Humanitarian work[link]

During his life, Juliá continued the work that was done by his parents during his childhood, cooperating with social and educational activities. Due to this, he was named to the New York Council for the Humanities.^[57] Among the targets of Juliá's charity work were initiatives directed towards youth. Concerned with rising levels of violence among teenagers, he sponsored script writing in high school students and supported young actions.^[52] In order to promote other Latin American performers, Juliá actively lent his support to the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA) and co-founded Visiones Luminosas, an initiative to promote screenwriters.^[58] He continued to work in the NYSF, but performed without receiving a salary.^[55] In a similar fashion, Juliá cooperated with independent filmmakers in Puerto Rico by acting in their productions for free or receiving a low salary.^[57] This constant involvement with the Latin American community earned him a posthumous Hispanic Heritage Award.^[59] Juliá also promoted interracial integration, being a member of Racial Harmony and serving as the chairman of the Joseph Papp Celebrity Coalition for Racial Harmony.^[60]

As part of his work in The Hunger Project, Juliá donated food to a food bank once every month.^[61] He also promoted the program on television and radio and served as narrator in bilingual videos. Juliá opened slots in his schedule to participate in multiple benefit galas on behalf of the organization.^[61] Due to this work, the project gave him their Global Citizen Award. His involvement was also recognized in "Ending Hunger: An Idea Whose time Has Come".^[61] On March 24, 1992, Juliá received the Courage of Conscience Award.^[62] In 1994, the government of El Salvador recognized his activism for human rights, granting him the role of overseer in their general elections in representation of Freedom House.^[63] During his visit to the country, he visited the tomb of Romero, subsequently describing his experience in a piece published in Freedom Review.

In recognition, the National Endowment for the Hispanic Arts offers the Raúl Juliá Award for Excellence annually.^[64] In 2002, actress Sandra Bullock was presented with the award.^[65] She received it for her work as the executive producer of The George Lopez Show, which offered work and exposition for Hispanic talent. In 2003, Daniel Rodríguez won the first Raúl Juliá Global Citizen Award from the Puerto Rico Family Institute based in New York, receiving the recognition due to charity work.^[66]

• The Raul Julia Micro Society, a charter school located inside Public School 3 was named in honor of Julia. The school is located in the Tremont neighborhood in the New York City borough of the Bronx.^[67]

Julien Temple, Baron Temple (born 26 November 1953 in London) is an English film, documentary and music video director. He began his career with short films featuring the Sex Pistols, and has continued with various off-beat projects, including The Great Rock And Roll Swindle, Absolute Beginners and a documentary film about Glastonbury.

Temple and Punk[link]

Temple was born into a communist family (his father Landon Temple ran Progressive Tours and was a Communist Party of Great Britain member).^[1] He is the brother of the last General Secretary of the CPGB, Nina Temple.

Temple was educated at St Marylebone Grammar School, from which he was expelled, William Ellis School and King's College, Cambridge. He grew up with little interest in film until he discovered the works of French anarchist director Jean Vigo when he was a student at Cambridge. This, along with his interest in the early punk scene in London in 1976 led to his friendship with The Sex Pistols, leading him to document many of their early gigs.

His first film was a short documentary called Sex Pistols Number 1, which set out to show the rise of the band from 1976-1977 in a series of short clips from television interviews and gigs.

This led to Temple making The Great Rock And Roll Swindle, another documentary, telling the story of the band from the viewpoint of their manager, Malcolm McLaren, as band members Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious had left. The film told of the rise of the band as apparently manipulated by McLaren and how he had shaped the band throughout their short career. Many of the 'facts' given by McLaren were disputed by John Lydon (who had dropped the Johnny Rotten name after leaving the band), who accused McLaren of using the film to attack him personally. This helped split opinion on the film as although it was praised for attempting to capture some of the punk scene of the time, it was seen as too skewed towards McLaren's vision.

Controversy aside, Temple was praised for his mix of animated scenes, documentary footage, and specially shot footage which he used to tell McLaren's story. This helped launch Temple into a career making music videos, something he would be best known for much of his career. Temple's next theatrical release was the short film Jazzin' for Blue Jean featuring David Bowie which was released as a support feature to The Company of Wolves. By 1985 Temple was now well known for being a director of successful music videos by the Kinks, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie and other British artists, several of which were early groundbreaking videos for the new MTV channel, but he had not yet directed a major film.

In 1981 Julien Temple directed the documentary "The Comic Strip", containing the foundational members of punk, alternative actor/comedians of The Comic Strip - most famously a 22 year old Jennifer Saunders, Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson and Peter Richardson. Being from the original punk scene of 1976 and being close friends with The Sex Pistols, it seemed natural for him to direct a group of talented young actors from more or less, the same era he is best known for. The setting was in London's Soho in the Raymond Review Bar, later to be a key location for the film Sid and Nancy directed by British, punk director Alex Cox-who in the film paid a homage to Julien Temple in the scene where Sid Vicious sings his angst ridden take of "My Way" about 50 minutes into the film. It was an hour long documentary with fairly shocking material in it-giving it a R18 certificate due to its strong drug references, frequent violence, very strong language and a strong sexual nature-including Bestiality. Typical of The Comic Strip Presents alternative, dark and often obscure and surreal humour, this documentary is considered a true masterpiece into the insight of Soho's sordid scene of 1981. The Comic Strip was based around the seedy world of strip clubs and lap dancing bars, and hardcore pornography. The Comic Strip actually was formed alongside a sex club in Soho-quite a paradoxical choice in settings as The Comic Strip's aim was to demolish the comedy before them-Monty Python, Benny Hill and others. Julien temple creates a twisted tale of London- with horror, grotesques, surrealism and obviously humour and of course labelling it with his signature style.

Projects of the 1980s and 1990s[link]

In 1983 Temple directed a film for the BBC Arena series called It's All True, named after the 1942 unfinished Orson Welles film. Compered by Welles himself, the film comprised many short segments about the state of the video industry, both real and imagined, many featuring cameos by celebrities including Mel Brooks, Grace Jones,^[2] Ray Davies, and Koo Stark.^[3]

In 1986 he directed the film version of Colin MacInnes' book Absolute Beginners. One of the most expensive films in British history, the fate of the studios involved (as well as several careers) were dependant on the success of the film. The film was critically panned in the UK. A musical, rather than a straight adaptation of the book, led to it being attacked for a lack of narrative, as well as being called a series of badly linked music videos. The film, like much of his music video work, reflects his ongoing interest in deeply saturated color American musicals of the '40s and '50s.

The film was financially unsuccessful, partly responsible (along with The Mission and the ill fated Revolution, which cost substantially more money) in the Goldcrest company going bankrupt. Temple found himself being blamed personally for the failure but the film proved to have a small following (including Michael and Janet Jackson) in the United States. This led to Temple moving to the United States and being offered the film Earth Girls Are Easy as well as a series of music videos for such artists as Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Eric B & Rakim, Neil Young and Tom Petty.

Temple returned to the UK in the late 1990s continuing to make films as well as music videos. Vigo Passion for Life (1998) recounts the passionate relationship between French film maker Jean Vigo (1905–34) and his wife Lydou, who both suffered from Tuberculosis. The film was not well received. A reviewer in Sight & Sound commented that the film "although absolutely faithful to the facts, is absolutely dreadful".^[4] Films which followed included Pandæmonium (2001), a critically acclaimed film about the friendship between Romantic poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth, and The Filth and the Fury (2000), another documentary about The Sex Pistols. This time the film was made with the full cooperation of the surviving members of the band and told the story of the band from their viewpoint. This film also mixed newly shot footage and interviews as well as footage culled from The Great Rock and Roll Swindle, as well as previously unseen interviews. The film was a critical success and was seen as setting the record straight in regard to the history of The Sex Pistols.

Recent years[link]

By 2000 he had 3 children too. A daughter named Juno, and two sons named Leo and Felix. Juno born in 1989, Leo born in 1993 and Felix in 2000.

Since 2002 Temple has made a feature length documentary about the Glastonbury Festival. This involved him shooting footage at the festival from 2002 to 2005, as well as drawing on the vast amount of archive footage as well as footage sent in by fans of the festival. It was released in the UK in April 2006.

In 2003 he became the patron of The Engine Room, the Bridgwater based media centre run by Somerset Film.

In 2006 Temple made a film of the life of his great friend, Joe Strummer - The Future Is Unwritten. In November 2007, Temple filmed several of the Sex Pistols' comeback shows at the Brixton Academy in London. This was followed by several filming sessions with each member of the band as they re-visited their old London haunts. The footage was assembled into a new documentary film released on DVD in 2008 as The Sex Pistols: There'll Always Be An England, bringing Temple's association with the Sex Pistols up to date.

In June 2008, Temple filmed three concerts by Madness at the Hackney Empire. These concerts were previews of the band's forthcoming album, The Liberty Of Norton Folgate. A DVD release is awaited.^[5]

In 2009 Temple directed the third film in his punk trilogy - Oil City Confidential - celebrating the Canvey Island legends Dr. Feelgood and a hymn to the Motor City entitled Requiem For Detroit? (2010).

In 2010 Temple directed the biography Ray Davies:Imaginary Man. Previously he'd directed several Kinks videos. Also, he was referred to by name in The Kinks song "Too hot" from their Word of Mouth album: "Julien's on the street today/ Scouting out locations..."

Temple is currently filming a feature dramatisation of "Murder in Samarkand" by Craig Murray, starring Steve Coogan and Megan Fox.

Douglas James Henning (May 3, 1947 – February 7, 2000) was a famous Canadian magician, illusionist, escape artist and politician.

Early life[link]

Henning was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, began practicing magic at Oakenwald School in Fort Garry, and later moved to Oakville, Ontario.

He performed his first show at the age of 14 at the birthday party of a friend and was inspired by his audience's spellbound reaction. Within a few months of placing an ad in a local newspaper, Henning launched a series of performances on local television in Toronto, and as an entertainer at parties.^{[citation needed]}

He was a student at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario and studied psychology.^[1] Henning met Ivan Reitman there when he appeared in the 1968 Reitman directed production of Li'l Abner in the role of Lonesome Polecat.^[2]

Career[link]

Shortly after university, Henning was awarded a Canada Council for the Arts grant.^[3] The terms of the grant required Henning to study magic. He did so, traveling to view first hand the talents of such magic greats as Slydini and Dai Vernon. Doug studied under Tony Slydini and considered him his primary teacher of magic.^[4]

With the intention of returning magic to its “glory days”, Henning worked to perfect his craft. Garnering financial support, he developed a live theatrical show, Spellbound, directed by Ivan Reitman, with music by Howard Shore and co-starring actress Jennifer Dale, a musical that combined a dramatic story and Henning's magic tricks. The show opened in Toronto, where it broke box office records. Henning reworked the show after catching the attention of New York producers, and took it to Broadway as The Magic Show, with songs composed by Stephen Schwartz. Debuting in 1974, the show ran for four and a half years, and earned Henning a Tony Award nomination.^[5]

Following his Broadway success, Henning approached NBC with the idea of producing a television special. It wasn't until Henning suggested that he would reproduce live Harry Houdini's famous and highly dangerous water torture escape — for the first time since Houdini performed it himself — that the NBC executives signed him.

Henning spent the next eight months reworking his stage act for TV and practicing the water torture escape act. More than 50 million viewers tuned in for the December 1975 broadcast of Doug Henning's World of Magic, hosted by Bill Cosby. Henning successfully performed the water torture illusion, although he did not break Houdini's time record. The event was the first of seven annual broadcasts,^[6] which would eventually bring Henning seven^[7] Emmy Award nominations, including two back-to-back in 1976 and 1977 for World Of Magic.^[8]

At the end of each World of Magic performance, Henning addressed the audience with the same monologue: "Anything the mind can conceive is possible. Nothing is impossible. All you have to do is look within, and you can realize your fondest dreams. I would like to wish each one of you all of life's wonders and a joyful age of enlightenment."^[9]

In 1977, Henning co-wrote a biography of Houdini, Houdini: His Legend and His Magic.^[10] He created illusions for an Earth, Wind and Fire tour in 1979,^[11] and for two of singer Michael Jackson's concerts, including his 1984 Victory Tour.^[12][13]

Henning divorced Barbara De Angelis in 1981 and married Debby Douillard in the Ladies' Dome in Fairfield, Iowa, in December of that year.^[14][15]

In 1983, Henning was the producer and star of the Broadway musical, Merlin.^[1] In 1984, he began a solo show on Broadway called Doug Henning and His World of Magic.^[1]

In 1985, a set of plush toys called "Doug & Debby Henning's: WONDER WHIMS" were made by Panosh Place and copyrighted by Marvin Glass and Associates. They were an attempt to get children to appreciate the magical wonders in the world around them.^{[citation needed]} There were a total of six Wonder Whim characters. Each came with an animal friend, a personalized story, and a magic kaleidoscope wand of colors and patterns.^[16]

Transcendental Meditation[link]

In the mid 1980s, Henning retired from the stage and had an increasing interest in Transcendental Meditation.^[1] He received a Ph.D in the Science of Creative Intelligence from the Maharishi University in Switzerland.^[17]

Natural Law Party[link]

In 1992, Henning was the Natural Law Party candidate in England’s general election, representing a residential section of Lancashire.^[18] He was Senior Vice President of the Natural Law Party of Canada ("NLPC"), and ran as the party's candidate for the former Toronto riding of Rosedale in the 1993 federal election, finishing sixth out of ten candidates.^[18][19][20]

Veda Land[link]

In 1992, Henning and Transcendental Meditation founder, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi drafted plans for a $1.5 billion-dollar project called "Maharishi Veda Land" near Niagara Falls, Ontario^[1] that would "combine astonishing, unique visual and sensory effects, state-of-the-art 3D imagery, and ultra high-tech entertainment technology with his best and most original magic illusion secrets".^[21] Maharishi Veda Land was conceived as a magical Himalayan setting where visitors would be wowed with theatrical presentations of ancient Vedic stories and “the deepest secrets of the universe", while ingesting organic vegetarian burgers and snacks.^{[citation needed]} Attractions were to include a building suspended above water and a journey into the heart of a rose.^[1] At present the project's status is uncertain.^[1]

Death and legacy[link]

Henning died aged 52 in February 2000 at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles five months after being diagnosed with liver cancer.^[1] His ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean off Redondo Beach, California.^[4]

James Randi, a fellow magician and prominent skeptic, was critical of Henning's involvement with Trancendental Meditiation (TM).^[22] In 2008, Randi asserted in his blog, SWIFT, that TM founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi had "caused the death of my friend Doug Henning".^[22] He claimed that Henning had immersed himself so thoroughly in TM that he "abandoned regular medical treatment for liver cancer, continued to pursue his diet of nuts and berries, and died of the disease."^[22]

In a strange turn of events, in 2005 a handwritten letter, from Doug Henning to James Randi, was placed for auction on eBay, unbeknownst to Randi. When Randi learned of it, he announced on his blog that the letter had been "stolen" from his files.^[23] A week later, Randi wrote that he "managed to have the sale stopped", and that the letter was back in his possession, but did not elaborate on further details of the controversy.^[24]

On June 8, 2010, it was announced that he would receive a star on Canada's Walk of Fame.^{[25] [26]} His "Zig Zag Girl" illusion is housed at the American Museum of Magic.^[27]
