Consider Norway, by far the least plausible candidate for the role of perpetrators of genocide, physical or cultural. This remote Scandinavian polity has repeatedly won every conceivable prize for upholding and cherishing human rights. Yet, it, too, has a dark chapter that ended only recently.

Howdy Madlads! Today, I talk about an ethnic group in northern Scandinavia that is not usually discussed: the Sámi. Being the native inhabitants of their lands, they are small in number these days, but their history and culture is overlooked too often, and their practices and language should receive some time in the spotlight!

Sound of the kven language
The Kven language or Kven Finnish (kvääni or kväänin kieli; kainu or kainun kieli[3], Finnish: kveenin kieli) is a Finnic language spoken in northern Norway by the Kven people. For political and historical reasons, it received the status of a minority language in 2005 within the framework of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. Linguistically, however, it is seen as a somewhat mutually intelligible dialect of the Finnish language, and grouped together with the Peräpohjola dialects such as Meänkieli, spoken in Torne Valley in Sweden. While it is generally considered as a dialect in Finland, it is officially recognized as a minority language in Norway. The Kven people themselves consider it a separate language.[4]

Kven (Kvääni, Kainu)
Native to: Norway
Native speakers: 2,000–8,000 (2005?)
Language family: Uralic
is a Finnic language or a group of Finnish dialects spoken in the northernmost parts of Norway by the Kven people. For political and historical reasons, it received the status of a minority language in 2005 within the framework of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. Linguistically, however, it is seen as a mutually intelligible dialect of the Finnish language, and grouped together with the Peräpohjola dialects such as Meänkieli, spoken in Torne Valley in Sweden. While it is often considered as a dialect in Finland, it is officially recognized as a minority language in Norway. However, some Kven people consider it a separate language.
The Kven language has come to incorporate many Norwegian loanwords, such as tyskäläinen (from the Norwegian word tysk, meaning German) instead of standard Finnish saksalainen. The Kven language also uses some old Finnish words that are no longer used in Finland.
There are about 1,500 to 10,000 known native speakers of this language, most of whom are over the age of 60. Middle aged speakers tend to have a passing knowledge of the language. They use it occasionally, but not frequently enough to keep it off the endangered list. People under the age of 30 are barely seen to speak or know the language. However, children in the community of Børselv can learn Kven in their primary schools.

Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.
Finnish is a Finnic language of the Uralic family, spoken by most people in Finland and ethnic Finns abroad. It is one of Finland's two official languages, along with Swedish. In Sweden, Finnish and Meänkieli (mutually intelligible with Finnish) are official minority languages. The Kven language, also mutually intelligible with Finnish, is spoken by a Finnish-descended minority in Norway's Troms and Finnmark counties.
The Kven language is a Finnic language or group of Finnish dialects spoken by the Kven people in northern Norway. It has the status of a minority language due to political and historical reasons, although some consider it a mutually intelligible dialect of Finnish. While Finland views it as a dialect, Norway officially recognizes it as a minority language, and many Kven regard it as a separate language. There are about 1,500 to 10,000 native speakers, mostly over 60 years old. Middle-aged speakers have some knowledge of the language but don't use it frequently, keeping it endangered. People under 30 rarely speak or know Kven.
This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
