The only complete guide to the Cook Islands - part 1 of 2
On the map (if you can find them at all!) they are just 15 tiny dots in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean...but together they're the Cook Islands, a unique paradise nation of warm and friendly people and stunning scenery. Aitutaki - one of the islands - has been used as the location for the US TV series, 'Survivor'on CBS and the UK series, 'Shipwrecked' on Channel 4 TV. You can find out more about all the Islands at www.cookislands.org.uk - the only independent, non-commercial guide on the net to all of the Cook Islands. This is part one of a two part guide to all of the Cook Islands. And even if you can't visit them in person, hopefully this will give you an idea of why they're so special. The film has been split into two parts because YouTube doesn't allow videos longer than 10 minutes. This part covers 8 of the 9 islands in the southern group. Part two will follow very soon. In the meantime, escape to a different world..or as one Australian author put it, to a place "where today is forever and tomorrow never comes. (I am indebted to an amazing man called Gerald McCormack for the footage of the kopeka and the stills of some of islands' bird life. He's created the definitive database about the islands' flora and fauna at http which I can't recommend too highly. Additional stills are courtesy of Marcus Gleinig and Ewan Smith of Air Rarotonga and Graeme Whitfield of Summerfield Systems, Rarotonga)

Cook Islands
The Cook Islands ; Cook Islands Māori is a self-governing parliamentary democracy in the South Pacific Ocean in free association with New Zealand. It is composed of 15 small islands whose total land area is 240 square kilometres. The Cook Islands' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), however, covers 1800000 square kilometres of ocean. The main population centres are on the island of Rarotonga (14153 in 2006), where there is an international airport. There is a much larger population of Cook Islanders in New Zealand, particularly the North Island. In the 2006 census, 58008 self-identified as being of ethnic Cook Island Māori descent. With about 100000 visitors travelling to the islands in the 2010-11 financial year, tourism is the country's main industry, and the leading element of the economy, far ahead of offshore banking, pearls, and marine and fruit exports. Defence and foreign affairs are the responsibility of New Zealand, in consultation with the Cook Islands. In recent times, the Cook Islands have adopted an increasingly independent foreign policy. Although Cook Islanders are citizens of New Zealand, they have the status of Cook Islands nationals, which is not given to other New Zealand citizens.

Heaven On Earth - Cook Islands
March 1997 A disturbing report on how islanders found themself struggling for survival after foreigners bought their country's main assets. After years of borrowing, the government found itself with debts beyond its capacity.Fed up with bankrolling its former colony, New Zealand finally pulled the economic plug. Cook Islands' Prime Minister, Sir Geoffrey Henry denies embezzlement after the collapse of the Sheraton Hotel project, doubling the national debt. To recoup finance, the government laid off state workers and offloaded its most saleable assets to the highest bidders, invariably outsiders. Local businessman Norm Mitchell complains that he was never even given a chance to buy the Aitutaki Hotel. Intimidated by the authorities, his business partners are too frightened to appear before the camera. After losing his state job, Matunga turned to carving ukuleles for tourists. But when this failed to bring in enough money he decided to emigrate to Australia. But not all islanders feel the same: after 25 years in a government office, Nani feels liberated by her new job as tourist guide. But the rest of the population struggles to survive without the state wage which was once taken for granted. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Cook Islands Holiday Guide - 2012 Dancers of the Year Mere & Teariki
2012 dancers of the year Mere Darling (Taio) and Teariki Mateariki perform at the Punanga Nui Market (Wednesady 2nd May 2012). The market is now open on Wednesdays for trading, with farmers especially in mind. During the month of May, Aitutaki farmers were at the market showing off and displaying their local produce, with many buyers from around Rarotonga snapping up what was available, from bananas, avocados, etc. It also gives tourists who are here on a short stay, a chance to shop for souvenirs as most of them fly out of the Cook Islands by Friday. Aitutaki - Cook Islands, South Pacific
Aitutaki is listed in some books as one of the 50 places everyone should see before they die. The island and its stunning, turquoise blue lagoon has been the location for the US TV series "Survivor Cook Islands" and the UK TV series "Shipwrecked". This video takes you on a tour of the island and that lagoon. This is the third in a series of short films about the Cook Islands. Cook Islands Dance London
With the world's attention focused on London this year, Cook Islands Tourism kicked off their European Roadshow 2012 with a selection of staged dance performances yesterday around nine major London landmarks. The dancers braved the cold weather and performed in iconic sites across London, including Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, St Paul's Cathedral and Piccadilly Circus. This was the first time many of the dancers had visited the UK, with some having never left the Cook Islands before. The group consist of eight dancers and four drummers, who have all been selected through a national audition process as well as a team of four management members. The performers range from 11 year olds to over 50 and the group includes one Male Dance Leader, one Female Dance Leader and a Band Master. Accompanied by the rhythmic beat of the drum, the women dance with a swaying hip movement that slowly goes from side to side, trying to keep their shoulders as still as possible, whereas the men dance with slightly bent knees, which they knock together in time to the drum beat.
