Bittern booming at RSPB Minsmere
Heres a video of a male bittern fishing and booming at RSPB Minsmere. Filmed on the evening of the 11/04/11 from the Island mere hide. sorry its a little jumpy in places due to the fact the hide is pretty bouncy and the it was pretty crowded now due to the fact the bitterns booming call is technically a form of infa sound it does not register on computer speakers just headphones from what I can gather so sorry about that

Short Eared Owls at Fen Drayton RSPB Reserve
www.youtube.com/user/TK42138 Sunday the sun was out, very mild so went out in the morning to film Short-eared Owls. However despite being 'diurnal' they didn't put in an appearance until late afternoon. So not wanting to waste a filming day, me and the missus went over to Lode (near Anglessey Abbey, Cambridge) to try and spot Otters which have been sighted pulling Zander and other fish from the river. Got there but not a sign - no spoors, tracks etc so filmed anyway as the location is pleasant then headed back to FD lakes as the afternoon was getting on. Wasn't disappointed as two pairs of Short-eared Owls were putting on a fine display of hunting, courtship/bonding behaviour. On top of this treat a Barn Owl turned up and was also hunting plus a Hare decided to wander in the frame. All in all - a good days filming. While there we got talking to a bloke who takes some of the best wildlife photos I've ever seen. Really fascinating to talk to and a privilage to see some of the photos he took while there. I think his name was Stuart and his photos can be seen at www.stuartpics.co.uk As there were quite a number of like-minded photographers present you can here the bleeps, clicks etc of the many cameras present. The owls didn't seem to mind though - I'm sure they're quite oblivious to us human observers. If you do visit - mind the access road as it's pot-holed, don't wander on the fields as this is part of a private owned farm - there's a small hard standing at the end where ...

In the past few decades, Sumatra's lowland forests have shrunk dramatically, from 16 million hectares in 1900 to just 500000-600000 hectares today. Harapan Rainforest is a forest under threat, and if we don't act now, this rainforest and its amazing wildlife will be gone in five years. Our ambitious project to restore habitat of this scale and importance is not a task undertaken lightly - but with your help and our expertise it can be saved

Farm Stay Yorkshire Series - RSPB Bempton Cliffs
www.farmstay.co.uk Some call Yorkshire 'God's own county,' and the four remarkable places to stay featured in this video, close to the dramatic 400ft cliffs at the RSPB's Bempton Cliffs reserve, demonstrate why. The series features great places to visit and takes us off the beaten track to find unique overnight stops that will have you deserting anonymous hotel chains for good! This episode focuses on the East Riding. Its famous coastline has long drawn visitors to resorts like Scarborough and Bridlington but there is much more to it than that which is amply illustrated in our selection of farms offering B&B's, holiday cottages and one that also features wooden wigwams. They are all in easy reach of the sights and sounds - if not the smells - of one of the best places to view seabirds in the country. Bird is the word
You'd expect a conservation charity to get involved in campaigns to save our seas, trees and bees. But here at the RSPB, we're branching out and adding our support to a campaign for this year's Christmas number one song.
To show our support, members of staff at our UK Headquarters in Bedfordshire have taken to the dance floor to share some unique moves with the help of our gardener and a giant albatross - 'bird' is most definitely the word!

RSPB Nature's Voice Podcast April 2011
http:/www.rspb.org.uk/podcasts RSPB Nature's Voice has been published as an audio podcast for more than four years. This is the first time it's been published with pictures! The RSPB's reserve at Arne on the Dorset coast boasts all six of the UK's reptiles. On this podcast meet the season's first baby smooth snake with Rob Farrington and Paul Morton who work there and have many more than six good reasons to join them on the reserve. We hear from members at the volunteers weekend about what they'll be doing to take part in the Stepping Up For Nature campaign.

Flying Common Crane, RSPB Lakenheath
This is the only footage I have got of Cranes at Lakenheath this year, a short time before they actually nested on the reserve. 2009 represents the first time in 400 years that Cranes had been confirmed breeding in the UK outside of the Norfolk Broads! I had then planned to come back later in the year to see the newly fledged young but in fact, my next visit was a little earlier and I saw the orioles nesting instead. Not a bad exchange :-) Anyway, here's hoping they (both) breed again next year! *Correction/Update* It appears that Cranes had succesfully nested in (secret in) Yorkshire in the last ten years too and I now have some confusion over whether the first chick succesfully fledged in 2008 after they first turned up in 2007. I then came back again later in the year and saw 6 (the 2 resident separate pairs, one fledged juvenile and one new adult) flying in from where they'd been (mainly) wintering in Welney Washes. This was their first time back since the summer. They have since been quite mobile in Cambridgeshire, returning to their Lakenheath base every so often. Bodes well for the years ahead...
