Carol Creighton Burnett (born April 26, 1933) is an American actress, comedian, singer, dancer and writer. Burnett started her career in New York. After becoming a hit on Broadway, she made her television debut. After successful appearances on The Garry Moore Show, Burnett moved to Los Angeles and began an eleven-year run on The Carol Burnett Show which was aired on CBS television from 1967 to 1978. With roots in vaudeville, The Carol Burnett Show was a variety show which combined comedy sketches, song, and dance. The comedy sketches included film parodies and character pieces. Burnett created many characters during the show's television run.

Burnett was born in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Ina Louise (née Creighton), a publicity writer for movie studios, and Joseph Thomas Burnett, a movie theater manager.^[1][2] Both of her parents suffered from alcoholism, and at a young age she was left with her grandmother, Mabel Eudora White. Her parents divorced in the late 1930s, and Burnett and her grandmother moved to an apartment near her mother’s in an impoverished area of Hollywood. There, they stayed in a boarding house with her younger half-sister Chrissy.^[3]

When Burnett was in the second grade, she briefly invented an imaginary twin sister named Karen, with Shirley Temple-like dimples. Motivated to further the pretense, Burnett recalled fondly that she "fooled the other boarders in the rooming house where we lived by frantically switching clothes and dashing in and out of the house by the fire escape and the front door. Then I became exhausted and Karen mysteriously vanished."^[4]

For a while, she worked as an usherette at what is now the Hollywood Pacific Theatre (the forecourt of which is now the location of her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; see the section in the theatre's article for more information). After graduating from Hollywood High School in 1951, Burnett won a scholarship to UCLA, where she initially planned on studying journalism. During her first year of college, Burnett switched her focus to theater arts and English, with the goal of becoming a playwright. She found she had to take an acting course to enter the playwright program; "I wasn't really ready to do the acting thing, but I had no choice."^[5] She followed a sudden impulse in her first performance; "Don't ask me why, but when we were in front of the audience, I suddenly decided I was going to stretch out all my words and my first line came out 'I'm baaaaaaaack!'"^[5] The audience response moved her deeply:

They laughed and it felt great. All of a sudden, after so much coldness and emptiness in my life, I knew the sensation of all that warmth wrapping around me. I had always been a quiet, shy, sad sort of girl and then everything changed for me. You spend the rest of your life hoping you'll hear a laugh that great again.^[5]

During this time, Burnett performed in several university productions, garnering recognition for her comedic and musical abilities. Her mother disapproved of her acting ambitions:

She wanted me to be a writer. She said you can always write, no matter what you look like. When I was growing up she told me to be a little lady, and a couple of times I got a whack for crossing my eyes or making funny faces. Of course, she never, I never, dreamed I would ever perform.^[4]

The young Burnett, always insecure about her looks, described her reaction to her mother's advice of "You can always write, no matter what you look like", in her 1986 memoir One More Time: "God, that hurt!"

In 1954, during her junior year, a professor invited Burnett and some other students to perform at a black-tie party. A man and his wife approached her afterward, as she was putting cookies in her purse to take home to her grandmother.^[6] Instead of reprimanding her, the man complimented Burnett's performance and asked about her future plans. When he discovered that she wanted to go try her luck with musical comedy in New York, but did not have enough money, he offered her^[6] and her boyfriend Don Saroyan each a $1000 interest-free loan on the spot. The conditions were that it was to be paid back in five years, his name was never to be revealed, and if she became a success, she would help others attain their dreams.^[6] Burnett took him up on his offer. She and Saroyan left college and moved to New York to pursue acting careers. That same year, Burnett's father died of causes related to his alcoholism.

After spending her first year in New York working as a hat-check girl and failing to land acting jobs, Burnett along with other girls living at The Rehearsal Club, a boarding house for women seriously pursuing an acting career, put on The Rehearsal Club Revue on March 3, 1955. They mailed invitations to agents, who showed up along with stars like Celeste Holm and Marlene Dietrich, and this opened doors for several of the girls. Burnett was cast in a minor role on The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show in 1955. She played the girlfriend of a ventriloquist’s dummy on the popular children’s program. This role led to her starring role opposite Buddy Hackett in the short-lived sitcom Stanley from 1956 to 1957.

After Stanley, Burnett found herself unemployed for a short time. She eventually bounced back a few months later as a highly popular performer on the New York circuit of cabarets and night clubs, most notably for a hit parody number called "I Made a Fool of Myself Over John Foster Dulles" (Dulles was Secretary of State at the time). In 1957, Burnett performed this number on both The Tonight Show, hosted by Jack Paar, and The Ed Sullivan Show. Burnett also worked as a regular on one of television's earliest game shows, Pantomime Quiz, during this time. In 1957, just as Burnett was achieving her first small successes, her mother died.

Burnett's first true taste of success came with her appearance on Broadway in the 1959 musical Once Upon a Mattress. The same year, she became a regular player on The Garry Moore Show, a job that lasted until 1962. She won an Emmy^[7] that year for her "Outstanding Performance in a Variety or Musical Program or Series" on the show. Burnett portrayed a number of characters, most memorably the put-upon cleaning woman who would later become her signature alter-ego. With her success on the Moore show, Burnett finally rose to headliner status and appeared in the 1962 special Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall, co-starring her friend Julie Andrews. The show was produced by Bob Banner, directed by Joe Hamilton, and written by Mike Nichols and Ken Welch.^[8] Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Program Achievement in the Field of Music. Burnett also guest-starred on a number of shows during this time, including The Twilight Zone episode "Cavender is Coming" and a recurring role as a tough female Corporal, later Gunnery Sergeant in Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.. Burnett became good friends with the latter show's star, Jim Nabors, who would later be her first guest every season on her variety show.^[9]

In 1963, Lucille Ball became a friend and mentor to Burnett, and after having the younger performer guest star on The Lucy Show a number of times, Ball reportedly offered Burnett her own sitcom called "Here's Agnes", to be produced by Desilu Productions. Burnett declined the offer, however, deciding instead to put together a variety show. The two remained close friends until Ball's death in 1989. Ball sent flowers every year on her birthday. When Burnett awoke on the day of her 56th birthday in 1989, she discovered via the morning news that Ball had died. Later that afternoon, flowers arrived at Burnett's house with the note "Happy Birthday, Kid. Love, Lucy."^[10]

In 1964, Burnett was cast opposite Caterina Valente and Bob Newhart on the variety show The Entertainers which ran for only one season. She also starred in the Broadway musical Fade Out - Fade In, but was forced to quit after sustaining a neck injury in a taxi accident. The show’s producers sued the actress for breach of contract, but the suit was later dropped.

The hour-long Carol Burnett Show, which debuted in 1967, garnered 23 Emmy Awards and won or was nominated for multiple Emmy Awards every season it was on the air. Its ensemble cast included Tim Conway (who was a guest player until the ninth season),^[11] Harvey Korman, Lyle Waggoner, and the teenaged Vicki Lawrence (who was cast partly because she looked like a younger Burnett). The network did not want her to do a variety show because they believed only men could be successful at variety, but Burnett's contract required that they give her one season of whatever kind of show she wanted to make.^[12] She chose to carry on the tradition of past variety show successes.

A true variety show, The Carol Burnett Show struck a chord with viewers. Among other things, it parodied films ("Went With the Wind" for Gone With the Wind), television ("As the Stomach Turns" for the soap opera As the World Turns) and commercials. Musical numbers were also a frequent feature. Burnett and her team struck gold with the original skit "The Family", which eventually was spun off into its own television show called Mama's Family, starring Vicki Lawrence.

Burnett opened most shows with an impromptu question and answer session with the audience, lasting a few minutes, during which she often demonstrated her ability to humorously ad lib. On numerous occasions, she obliged when asked to perform her trademark^[13] Tarzan yell.

Burnett ended each show by tugging her ear, which was a message to her grandmother who had raised her. This was done to let her know that she was doing well and that she loved her. During the show's run, Burnett's grandmother died. On an Intimate Portrait episode on Burnett, she tearfully recalled her grandmother's last moments: "She said to my husband Joe from her hospital bed 'Joe, you see that spider up there?' There was no spider, but Joe said he did anyhow. She said 'Every few minutes a big spider jumps on that little spider and they go at it like RABBITS!!' And then she died. There's laughter in everything!"^[14] Burnett continued the tradition of tugging her ear.

The Carol Burnett Show ceased production in 1978, and is generally regarded as the last successful major network prime-time variety show.^{[citation needed]} It continues to have success in syndicated reruns.

Other roles[link]

Burnett starred in a few films while her variety show was running, including Pete 'n' Tillie (1972). After the show ended, Burnett assumed a number of roles that departed from comedy. She appeared in several dramatic roles, most notably in the television movie Friendly Fire. She appeared as Beatrice O'Reilly in the film Life of The Party: The Story of Beatrice, a story about a woman fighting her alcoholism. Her other film work includes The Four Seasons, Annie, and Noises Off. She also returned to star in a different role as Queen Aggravain in the movie version of Once Upon a Mattress.

Burnett also made occasional returns to the stage: in 1974, she appeared at The Muny Theater in St. Louis, Missouri, in I Do! I Do! with Rock Hudson and eleven years later, she took the supporting role of Carlotta Campion in the 1985 concert performance of Stephen Sondheim's Follies.

Burnett made frequent appearances as a panelist on the game show Password, an association she maintained until the early 1980s. She was also the first celebrity to appear on the children's series Sesame Street, on that series' first episode on November 10, 1969.^[15]

In the 1980s and 1990s, Burnett made several attempts at starting a new variety program. She also appeared briefly on The Carol Burnett Show's "The Family" sketches spinoff, Mama's Family, as her stormy character, Eunice Higgins. She played the matriarch in the cult comedy miniseries Fresno, which parodied the primetime soap opera Falcon Crest. She returned to TV in the mid-1990s as a supporting character on the sitcom Mad About You, playing Theresa Stemple, the mother of main character Jamie Buchman (Helen Hunt).

Burnett has long been a fan of the soap opera All My Children. She realized a dream when Agnes Nixon created the role of Verla Grubbs for her. Burnett suddenly found herself playing the long-lost daughter of Langley Wallingford (Louis Edmonds) and causing trouble for her stepmother Phoebe Tyler-Wallingford (Ruth Warrick). She hosted a 25th anniversary special about the show in 1995 and made a brief cameo appearance as Verla Grubbs on the January 5, 2005, episode which celebrated the show's 35th anniversary. Burnett reprised her role as Grubbs in September 2011 as part of the series' finale.

In 2008, Burnett had her second role as an animated character, in Horton Hears a Who!. Her first was in The Trumpet of the Swan. In 2009, she made a guest appearance on the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, for which she was nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. In November 2010, she guest starred on an episode of Glee as the mother of cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester.^[16]

Burnett was open to her fans, never refusing to give an autograph, and had limited patience for "Those who've made it, then complain about loss of privacy."^[4]

Personal life[link]

The first house Burnett lived in was the Beverly Hills house formerly owned by Harry James and Betty Grable. Growing up in rented rooms, an actual house was "a luxury", as "A Murphy bed was [her] idea of spacious."^[4]

She married Don Saroyan on December 15, 1955; the couple divorced in 1962. On May 4, 1963, Burnett married TV producer Joe Hamilton, a divorced father of eight, with whom she had three daughters: actress and writer Carrie Hamilton, Jody Hamilton, and singer Erin Hamilton. The marriage ended in divorce in 1984, and Joe Hamilton later died of cancer (1991). On November 24, 2001, Burnett married Brian Miller (principal drummer in and contractor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra), who is twenty-three years her junior.

In January 2002, Carrie Hamilton died of lung and brain cancer at the age of 38. She had become addicted to drugs as a teenager. Burnett and Carrie wrote a play together called Hollywood Arms, which was adapted from Burnett's bestselling memoir, One More Time. The Broadway production featured Linda Lavin as Burnett's character's beloved grandmother, and Michele Pawk as the mother, Louise. Pawk went on to receive the 2003 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play.

Since the '60s, Burnett's been best friends with Julie Andrews. Carol is the godmother of Julie's first child Emma Walton Hamilton.

Lawsuits[link]

Burnett drew attention in 1981 when she sued the tabloid newspaper National Enquirer for libel after the Enquirer described her alleged public drunkenness, purportedly with Henry Kissinger. Carol was particularly sensitive to the accusations because of her parents' own alcoholism. The case, Carol Burnett v. National Enquirer, Inc., was a landmark for libel cases involving celebrities, although the unprecedented $1.6 million verdict for Burnett was reduced to about $800,000 on appeal. She donated a portion of that award to the University of Hawaii and University of California at Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, saying she hoped the suit would teach aspiring journalists the dangers of defaming individuals in articles. The money was used to fund Law and Ethics courses at the school. Burnett said at the time that she didn't care if she just won "cab fare", and that the lawsuit was a matter of principle.

In March 2007, she sued 20th Century Fox for copyright infringement, trademark violation, statutory violation of right of privacy, and misappropriation of name and likeness over the use of an altered version of her signature closing song and the portrayal of her cleaning lady character "charwoman" in an episode of Family Guy.^[17] On May 26, 2007, the lawsuit was dismissed by a Los Angeles federal judge.^[18] The judge used Hustler Magazine v. Falwell as the general basis for the decision.^[19]

Angry Kid is the main character of a series of British stop motion animation short films, voiced by Darren Walsh. The show was created, directed, written, and designed by Darren Walsh and produced by Aardman Animations. Most of the episodes contain adult content.

Unlike most Aardman productions, Angry Kid was not created using clay animation but a combination of pixilation (using masks for facial expressions) and stop motion puppetry.^[1]

Seasons 1 and 2 have been released on DVD in the UK and Australia. All the Angry Kid animations are free to watch and / or download on Atom.com. A compilation DVD called Aardman's Dark Side was also released, and it contains several Season 2 episodes and an exclusive episode.

• Darren Walsh as Angry Kid, the titular protagonist. He is a redheaded 15-year-old who has a foul mouth, and runny nose. He is a mean-spirited brat who doesn't care who he steps on to get what he wants. Angry Kid is often seen wearing a blue parka jacket (even over his pajamas). He's known by police officers as "The Little Ginger Kid on the Bike" and he's also known as "Stanners." He gets attacked by his pet bull terrier and other bull terriers in some episodes.
• David Holt as Dad, Angry Kid and Lil' Sis' unseen father. He has an obsession for country western music. He usually hits Angry Kid with his newspaper when he acts up (but only his hand is shown when he hits him). In Who Do I Think I Am?, when he shows Angry Kid some home videos, his full body (apart from his head) is shown.
• Jo Allen as Lil' Sis, Angry Kid's little sister. Her brother usually torments and teases her, but she gets her own back usually. Even though she is smaller and younger than Angry Kid, she is a lot smarter. She talks very little (ignoring the half-hour special), but she had one speaking part in the episode "Horror," in which she was possessed by an evil spirit and her head turned all the way around. She also talked in the Who Do I Think I Am? specials and the Aardman's Dark Side exclusive episode.

• Mike Cooper as Speccy, Angry Kid's nerdy "best friend". Speccy is allergic to nuts (as revealed in "Swollen"), and when Angry Kid shoved a handful down his throat, he became severely disfigured, and he was then rushed to the hospital by Dad. Speccy's always picked on by Angry Kid, who's very cruel to him (like he has Speccy do his homework for him, or he doesn't let him watch movies with him). In Who Do I Think I Am?, it was revealed that Speccy's real name is Myles.

• Car Sick

Angry Kid's sitting in the back of his dad's car. He's holding a chocolate bar and a can of Coke, and he has chocolate around his mouth. To annoy his dad, he keeps pretending he's gonna "jub up" (be sick), which makes Dad furious. Angry Kid turns out to have actually vomited, but he swallows it.

• Bored

Angry Kid and his little sister named Lil' Sis are watching an educational program on TV. Angry Kid's getting really bored with this, so he sticks his tongue out and does the V signs at Lil' Sis. When he gets her attention by pushing her and doing the signs at her and blowing a raspberry, she retaliates by sticking her two fingers up his nose. So he gets back at her by sneezing on her fingers, which makes her cry. He tries to quiet her by hugging her and shushing her, unaware that she's rubbing the snot onto his face.

• Goalie

Angry Kid's playing football as the goalie, which he finds rather boring. He doesn't pay attention to the ball, and as a result, he gets hit by the ball which makes him dizzy.

• Blood Juice

Angry Kid is sitting in the back of Dad's car, asking if they're there yet (to which Dad says no) and then "How many miles till we get there?" (but he's interrupted by Dad shouting, "Be quiet!"). Angry Kid then starts playing with his boxing puppet (which looks exactly like him). But while playing with the puppet, Angry Kid accidentally makes it punch him in the nose, causing a nose bleed. Angry Kid wipes it off his face and keeps telling his dad that it's "blood juice". He then blows his nose, making the blood go all over his face. Upon seeing this, Dad gets frustrated, stops the car, and tells Angry Kid to get out of the car. During the credits, he tells Angry Kid to lean back and pinch his nose to make the bleeding stop, but it gets all over Angry Kid's shirt, which makes Dad very mad.

• Backwards Writing

Angry Kid, Lil' Sis, and Dad are in the car and Angry Kid asks why Ambulance is written backwards on the ambulances. Dad then explains, only for Angry Kid to start writing obscene backwards messages to his father. Incredibly irritated, Dad starts repeatedly hitting Angry Kid every time he shows a new sign, with Lil Sis encouraging him with more signs as well.

• Road Hog

Angry Kid's riding his bike down a street when a lorry comes up behind him and the driver honks his horn at Angry Kid, startling him. The lorry tries to overtake Angry Kid, but he keeps changing lanes and putting his arm out so the lorry can't overtake, which annoys the driver, who honks his horn and yells at Angry Kid to get out of the road. He continues this until the lorry runs out of diesel, but then gets lost and cannot find his way home.

• Stinky

Angry Kid is at school standing in front of a brick wall. He then sniffs his finger which makes him feel sick. He keeps sniffing it and making vomit noises. A "Director's Cut" Version of this episode includes a suspenseful soundtrack which heightens every time he sniffs his finger.

• Headlights

Angry Kid is in his father's car going through a dark tunnel. Each time a light shines at Angry Kid, he makes different expressions. He then gets out of his father's car without using the door and winds up on the back-screen. He then clings onto the front of a lorry, before turning up in his father's car again, asking "Are we there yet?".

• Cotton Bud

Angry Kid is trying to sneeze but he can't, so he sticks a cotton bud up his nose. It causes him to sneeze, but the cotton bud gets stuck. As he tries to remove it, he sneezes again, causing his entire thumb to go up his nose.

• Sex Education

Angry Kid is in the front lounge watching a sex education show about making babies. A few minutes later his sister comes in. Eventually he throws up after switching to a programme about liposuction.

• Bone

Angry Kid is riding his bike down a street. He succeeds in riding with one hand, but when trying to ride with no hands, he falls off his bike. He gets up only to find a bone sticking out of his elbow. Then a nearby dog grabs Angry Kid's bone. Angry Kid fights the dog off by biting its ear off. He then faints.

• Captain Thunderpants

Angry Kid's sitting in the back of Dad's car, bored with his country music. Angry Kid asks if he can put on his tape, "Captain Thunderpants". There are only two lines in this song, which are "one pound of middle cut pork leg joint" and "stew my foot and call me Brenda", which Angry Kid likes to accompany with a car-horn and an air-horn.

• Swearing

Angry Kid's sitting in the back of the car when he asks Dad what words he cam say (to which he says he can say bum). After saying bum over and over (which annoys Dad, who tells him that's enough), Angry Kid mutters other made-up naughty words and Dad hits him with a newspaper. Then Angry Kid says bugger, shit, and fuck and every time he says them, Dad keeps hitting him and he almost hits him again when Angry Kid says cabbage. Dad then mutters, "Shit." and Angry Kid, upon hearing him, tells him he said shit, but Dad hits him with the newspaper again. Then Angry Kid sniffles and tears start rolling down his cheeks.

• Queen's Speech

Angry Kid is preparing for a speech to the Queen. Lil Sis is stuck to the Christmas tree.

• Hard Face

Angry Kid's meant to be brushing his teeth, but instead, he brushes up on his imitations and pretends to be different character. Then when he brushes way too fast and gets his toothbrush stuck in his mouth, he says, "They don't show me no respect!" Then he gets scared and says, "Mum?".

• Chips

Angry Kid's standing outside a chip shop eating a 50p portion chips from a newspaper. He tries tossing the chips into his mouth but misses every time, which attracts the attention of a neighborhood dog.

• Superhero

Angry Kid is now Captain Buggernuts, the Masked Bum Cake Avenger, and his mission is to save the world from the evil Dr. Assrot and his evil accomplices on his "trusty hydro chopper". But when he gets attacked by a dog (who obviously works for Dr. Assrot), he is saved by Lady Angelfarts (Lil Sis), who then saws off Angry Kid's hair (which appeared to be hiding bones, which are later attacked by two dogs).

• Love Bite

Angry Kid is sucking on a bottle to give himself a love-bite, and thus make it look like he's got a girlfriend.

• Buzz Off

Angry Kid is in the bathroom, where he finds his mother's vibrator. He sellotapes his toothbrush to it and, using a pair of false teeth, pretends to be an old lady. Eventually, he sticks a toothbrush onto the vibrator, and it goes crazy.

• Hoax Call

Angry Kid is doing a prank phone call to a Directory Inquiries service, causing the Scot on the other end to commit suicide.

• Wee Wee

Angry Kid is peeing when Lil Sis walks into the bathroom. He tells her not to look but she doesn't listen, so he ends up peeing on her, causing her to cry.

• Speed

Angry Kid and Lil Sis are on is on the run from the police on a bike. Later they think he has hacked into the police radio. However, neither cop realizes that he has actually snuck into the back of their car with a walkie-talkie. After the cops fight, Angry Kid gets back on his bike while Lil Sis rides and they both speed away, with Angry Kid laughing and shouting "bollocks".

• Sneeze

Angry Kid is sneezing at the mirror, making loud noises. When his mother tries getting into the locked bathroom, he sneezes loud that his eyeballs pop out and stick to the mirror.

• Horror

Angry Kid and his Lil Sis are watching a horror movie, and Angry Kid tries to scare his little sister with a pair of ghoulish gloves. When that plan fails, he tries poking her with a spider on a stick. However, she remains unfazed. When he then tries scaring with a ghost mask, she is possessed by a demon who exclaims: "Shut the fuck up! I'm trying to watch the telly!", she takes the ghost mask, shoves it in Angry Kid's mouth, then reverts back to normal.

• Kidnap

Angry Kid is in the back of his dad's car with a tissue. He loudly blows his nose, saying he's got "snot blocks". Annoyed, his father warns him to stop being naughty or he'll take him to the children's home. Angry Kid tells his dad that he doesn't love him and begins using the tissue as a whip. Dad eventually gives up and says that he's taking his son to the home. Terrified, Angry Kid begs him not to, and when Dad doesn't reassure him, he gags himself with the tissue and writes on a piece of paper 'Help! Kidnap!'. Dad is promptly pulled over by a passing police car, who obviously believe Angry Kid's help sign. However, Angry Kid ends up at the children's home anyway and, as Dad drives away laughing evilly, he yells "bollocks!".

• Wanker

Angry Kid's sitting in the back of Dad's car and he asks him, "What's a wanker?" because his friends told him what it was like at school. But Dad can't put it in terms Angry Kid would understand, so he just tells him that it's a type of behavior and tells him to not talk about it, to which Angry Kid agrees, but then he whispers, "Wanker!" while doing the "Wanker" gesture.

• Sex Call

Angry Kid rings for phone sex, being confused of what "Cumming" means.

• Strange Trip

Angry Kid is once again bored of long car journeys, so Dad suggests he just close his eyes and sleep. But while Angry Kid's sleeping, Dad drives through a magical world with things to keep Angry Kid amused. Dad then tells Angry Kid to wake up, but he doesn't because he said sleep. But then he finally wakes up when Dad orders him to open his eyes.

• Card Trick

Angry Kid tries to show his sister a card trick but fails.

Angry Kid's wondering what'll happen after his parents die and he wants to know how much inheritance will he get.

• Puerile

Angry Kid and Lil' Sis are reading magazines on the couch, but then they challenge each other to a loud and smelly farting contest. Angry Kid then tries to set his farts on fire with a match, only to burn his areas.

• Curious

Angry Kid wondered what was happening last night as he could hear strange noises coming from his parents bedroom but his dad reckons he was just dreaming. Unimpressed, Angry Kid decides to ask his mom about it, prompting his dad to offer him 10 pounds to never mention it again. Angry Kid accepts it, and then asks how much is a butt plug.

• Russian Roulette

Angry Kid, Lil' Sis, and Speccy are playing a game of Russian roulette where you spin the hammer and if it points to you, you hit yourself with the hammer. Note: The uncut version of this episode sees a somewhat more graphic conclusion when Speccy gets hit.

• Tourette's

Angry Kid pretends that he has tourette syndrome whilst in the car, making Dad become evermore enraged.

• Piss

Angry Kid asks Dad to stop the car because he needs to "wee" (go to the toilet). But Dad's reluctant and instead gives him a flask to pee in. Trouble soon follows.

• Swollen

Angry Kid and his friend Speccy are both sitting in back seat of the car. Angry Kid then offers Speccy a peanut, but he kindly refuses because he's allergic to nuts. Regardless, Angry Kid makes Speccy swallow a nut by punching him in the shoulder and quickly puts a nut in his mouth (while it's open) and Speccy accidentally swallows it and as a result, he gets all puffed up and disfigured. When Dad asks what's going on, Angry Kid puts the bag of nuts over Speccy's head and pretends that everything's fine. But Dad gets suspicious when he sees the bag over Speccy's head and orders Angry Kid to take it off, which he does. When he sees Speccy disfigured, Dad gets scared and tells Speccy that he's gonna take him to a hospital, to which Speccy thanks him and says that he's so kind and Angry Kid laughs at him.

• Table Menace

As the family are eating breakfast, they're informed that one of their relatives had died. Angry Kid then begins to choke, with no one realizing that it's genuine.

• Cake

Angry Kid is eating Lil' Sis' birthday cake and when Dad asks him why he's eating it, he says that she doesn't like cake because she told him. Later, Lil' Sis shows up and sees that her cake has been eaten, and she walks away upset.

• Chemistry

Angry Kid and Speccy are doing experiments, but Angry Kid uses anything he can lay his hands on. He's then able to turn himself invisible, enabling him to torture Speccy. He does so by taking Speccy's glasses off and snapping them in half, then hits his head repeatedly on the table. But before he can hit him with a fire extinguisher, Dad enters (having heard all the ruckus) and orders Angry Kid to stop, but Angry Kid sprays Speccy with the fire extinguisher and says that he shouldn't be playing with toys.

• Dustbin

Angry Kid is suffocating Speccy in the dustbin and tells him that he's not letting him out until he signs a contract for him. And Speccy does sign it, but not as himself, saying that Angry Kid didn't specify that the signature had to be his. So Angry Kid keeps Speccy trapped in the dustbin and after the credits, Angry Kid's seen keeping a watch on the dustbin late at night.

• Doll

Angry Kid's playing with one Lil' Sis' dolls (Jemmima) in the kitchen. But when she sits down at the table with him, Angry Kid pretends to hate dolls (especially Jemmima) and puts the doll in a blender, stab it 3 times with a fork, squirt it with a jar of ketchup, and turn on the blender (thus destroying the doll). When Dad sees this, he asks if they're playing dollies together, but Angry Kid says no. Dad, not fooled by Angry Kid's fake innocence, orders his son to stop teasing Lil' Sis and give her doll back to her. Angry Kid does so, but the doll's now all messed up. Angered, Dad orders Angry Kid to go to his room, but Angry Kid tries to fix the doll, only for Dad to yell at him to go to his room.

• Sofa

Angry Kid and Lil' Sis are watching a scary movie on TV and eating popcorn. But what they don't know is that Speccy's behind them trying to get to the popcorn, but he's being viciously attacked by Angry Kid's dog. The dog then throws the now-badly hurt Speccy over the couch, thus scaring Angry Kid and Lil' Sis and making them scream (because they thought it was a dead body).

• Snail

Angry Kid's setting up a snail race, but he crushes the snail's shells with a cricket bat and then he whacks Speccy with it.

• Jackanory

Angry Kid tells the viewers the story of "Little Red Riding Twat" (a spoof of Little Red Riding Hood), with Speccy as Little Red Riding Twat, Lil' Sis as the Grandma, and Angry Kid's dog as the Wolf.

• Marathon Man

Angry Kid, armed with a large amount of fireworks, is running down the street being chased by his dog. He chucks multiple fireworks to distract his dog which hit several people. His dog eventually brings a lit firework back to him causing to light the large amount of fireworks, and causing an explosion.

• Road Safety

Angry Kid meets the Green Cross Code man, a road safety mascot, on the streets but won't listen to the Road Safety instructions. The Green Cross Code man is then hit by a car.

• Birdy

Angry Kid and Lil' Sis meet a singing robin (which is really a cartoon) at a Christmas shop, and Angry Kid tells Lil' Sis that there is no Santa Claus and it's just Dad, only to be flattened by Santa himself (who's also a cartoon).

• What Are You Like?

Angry Kid's posing as Dick Spoonphil, investigating what's happening on the streets. He sees a passerby and asks him what he's like, but then he whacks him twice with his microphone. But then Angry Kid tells the man to come back again, only to whack him again and laughs. The man then retaliates by pushing Angry Kid to the ground and walks off. Angry Kid gets up and says, "What was he like?!".

• Catapult

Angry Kid aims his slingshot at the camera while doing a Dirty Harry impersonation. He then accidentally fires the slingshot at a car. A teacher finds out and Angry Kid then fires the catapult at himself.

• I Spy

Everyone's favorite car game takes a very twisted turn when Angry Kid decides to have a little fun with Dad. Series finale.

[edit] Who Do I Think I Am?

A 20-minute special, broadcast on BBC Three at 7:30 PM on Christmas Eve, 2004. It is also available to watch on the Atom Films website in 7 parts. The plot focuses on Angry Kid, who is given the task to write a 10-page essay for his teacher on who he really thinks he is. His dad and his friend Speccy are of no help, but later he gets the aid of Lil Sis, who wants all of his possessions in return for writing the essay, to which he reluctantly agrees. The special ends with Angry Kid reading out the essay written by Lil Sis about what he really is before going out to workout in the school gym.

"Handbags"[link]

Angry Kid raps in a music video called "Handbags," telling the story of how the kids (which, oddly, look exactly like him) playing soccer also use handbags.

"Gridlock"[link]

Angry Kid and the other characters sing in a music video called "Gridlock," telling the story of how the kids were stuck in a traffic jam and everyone was fighting with each other. It was part of Aardman's Live Earth series.

A straight-to-DVD episode featured on Aardman's Dark Side DVD. Angry Kid is running in the forest, where he finds a bandaged-up version of himself as a woman. Angry Kid soon realizes that it's just a nightmare. Lil' Sis comes into his bedroom to ask if he's all right, but then she splits in two before him, which turns out to be yet another nightmare. He wakes up and Speccy is beside him, talking about maths and triangles. Angry Kid calls his nightmare crap, and Speccy dryly retorts that the real nightmare is when he wakes up. Angry Kid then realizes that he's at school wearing a dress. Angry Kid is promptly told off before Speccy keeps saying, "There's no place like home" 3 times (a reference to The Wizard of Oz). Angry Kid then hits Speccy with a shoe, and the nightmares end.

Clifford Smith (born April 1, 1971),^[3] better known by his stage name Method Man, is an American hip hop artist, record producer, actor and member of the hip hop collective Wu-Tang Clan. He took his stage name from the 1979 film The Fearless Young Boxer, also known as Method Man. He is one half of the rap duo Method Man & Redman. He won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for "I'll Be There for You/You're All I Need to Get By" with Mary J. Blige. In 2007, the writers of About.com placed him on their list of the Top 50 MCs of Our Time (1987–2007).^[4]

Method Man appeared in the motion pictures Belly, How High, Garden State as well as a minor role in The Wackness. More recently, he appeared as a crewman in George Lucas' film Red Tails. On television, he and hip-hop collaborator Redman co-starred on the short-lived Fox sitcom Method & Red, and he had a recurring role on HBO's Oz as Tug Daniels and as Calvin "Cheese" Wagstaff on the acclaimed HBO drama series The Wire.

Born in Staten Island, New York, on April 1 , 1971, Clifford Smith divided his childhood between his father's Long Island residence and his mother's home in the Park Hill section of Staten Island aka Killa Hill.^[5] He has two sisters, Terri and Missy.^[5]

[edit] 1992–96: Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and Tical

As Wu-Tang Clan ascended to hip hop stardom, Method Man was always one of the most visible members of the collective. He was one of only two members to get a solo song on the group's debut album Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers and he was the first to release a solo album under the Clan's unusual contract which allowed its members to release albums under any record label (Method chose to sign with rap label Def Jam). Method Man's solo debut, Tical (1994) was critically acclaimed and well received, entering the American charts at #4 and eventually selling in excess of one million copies. That album featured the hit single "All I Need" which was later remixed featuring Mary J Blige, which won a Grammy "I'll Be There for You/You're All I Need,"). during this time Method Man also became close friends with The Notorious B.I.G., and was the only guest rapper featured on his debut album Ready to Die. He was also featured on Spice 1's album "AmeriKKKa's Nightmare" on the track "Hard 2 Kill". In 1995, he was also featured on "Got the Flava" off Showbiz and A.G.'s album Goodfellas. In 1996, Method Man appeared on Tupac Shakur's album All Eyez on Me, on the song "Got My Mind Made Up" alongside his rhyme partner Redman, The Dogg Pound (Daz and Kurupt) and Inspectah Deck (Rebel INS), whose verse did not make the released album version (although his nickname "Rebel INS" can be heard as the song fades).

[edit] 1997–98: Wu-Tang Forever and Tical 2000: Judgement Day

On June 3, 1997 the Wu-Tang Clan released their Grammy-nominated multiplatinum double CD Wu-Tang Forever, the long-awaited follow up to 36 Chambers. The album has sold over 8.3 million copies to date worldwide.

His second solo album was Tical 2000: Judgement Day, released in 1998, which was heavily influenced by the apocalypse theories surrounding the forthcoming end of the millennium, and which featured myriad guest appearances from his fellow Wu-Tang MCs, proving for the world that Method Man is in fact America's most blunted(with the help of Red Man). The album was certified double platinum. Other guest appearances include Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, D'Angelo, Chris Rock, Mobb Deep, Redman, and brief cameos from Russell Simmons, Bishop Don "Magic" Juan, Janet Jackson, and Donald Trump. The album sold better than his first fueled by the party track "Judgment Day" and the D'Angelo collaboration "Break Ups 2 Make Ups", earning Platinum and Gold certifications in the U.S. and Canada respectively. Reviews for the album were mixed and its long runtime and abundance of intermittent comedy skits were widely criticized. Producers on this album included True Master, 4th Disciple and the RZA.

[edit] 1999–2000: Blackout! (with Redman)

Method Man was part of the very successful Hard Knock Life Tour with Jay-Z, Redman, Ja Rule, and DMX. During this tour, Method Man & Redman recorded Blackout!, a light-hearted, bass-heavy, profanity-laced, party record with an EPMD-evoking emphasis on funky beats and the mischievous wit and cool flows and good rhythm of the two MCs. The album reached platinum status quickly, both in the U.S. and Canada, fueled by "Da Rockwilder", "Cereal Killa", "1, 2, 1, 2", "Tear It Off" and "Y.O.U.". This album also featured three previously released tracks on which the two collaborated.

Their success would lead the duo on to star in movies and TV shows, become product spokespersons and household names, but also associated them with marijuana use in the media. The most immediate results of their success was their co-starring roles in the major motion picture film How High, their endorsement deal for Right Guard, Redman's starring role in Seed of Chucky and a short-lived sitcom on Fox Television entitled Method & Red.

[edit] 2000–04: The W, Iron Flag, and Tihkal 0: The Prequel

The Wu-Tang Clan released The W on November 21, 2000 and Iron Flag on December 18, 2001. The W received both critical and commercial success for the group, while Iron Flag did receive some but not to the effect of The W. The efforts earned two more platinum plaques for the Wu-Tang Clan.

In 2004, Meth released his third solo album Tical 0: The Prequel, which featured the hit party single "What's Happenin'" with Busta Rhymes. Hip hop critics voiced their displeasure with the album, many agreeing that Tical 0 felt like generic party rap and featured too many mainstream guests, detracting from his own performances. Regardless, this album sold reasonably well and was certified gold record by the RIAA relatively quickly, but would not see the platinum success of his previous solo releases. There was trouble even before the album's release when Method apparently complained to the press about excessive interference from Def Jam over the album's beats (Meth supposedly desired more input from Wu-Tang leader RZA). On its release, many fans and critics were taken aback by its strong "mainstream" or "commercial" sound, highlighted by the guest appearances of pop-rap stars like Missy Elliott and P. Diddy, two artists that are involved with much different facets of rap music.

P. Diddy was one of the executive producers for the album, although Meth later voiced his displeasure with the final product. "On the third LP, it was suggested (by Def Jam) to bring in Harve Pierre and P. Diddy. Who am I to argue? Puff knows how to sell some records. But that wasn't the direction to go in, and I know that."^[6]

[edit] 2006–07: 4:21... The Day After

Method Man's fourth album, entitled 4:21: The Day After was released in August 2006 with a star lineup of producers featuring Havoc, Erick Sermon, Scott Storch, Allah Mathematics, Mr. Porter, and, most importantly to Meth, RZA. This time around, a more focused Method Man went back to his hip hop roots and both hip hop fans and the media took notice. He did an interview on the ItsHipHop.Tv.^[7] Despite this being one of Meth's strongest solo efforts to date, the album failed to do well commercially due to it having no single or video, which Method Man has held discontent towards his own label for. However, he has been touring strongly all over the world to promote the album, and has appeared onstage with fellow Wu-Tang member Inspectah Deck, as well as New York up and comers Saigon, and Gat Murdah. Meth contributed various reasons for the problems between him and his label, Def Jam. While he puts most of the blame on personal agendas in the Def Jam offices, Meth did take some blame, himself, for giving into his record label.

In early May 2007, Method Man's camp leaked the street single "New York New York" which became a popular track on the internet.^[8]

[edit] 2007–10: Blackout! 2

On March 27, 2007, Redman confirmed on BET's Rap City: Tha Bassment that the sequel to How High, How High 2, is currently being written.

In an April 10, 2007 Onion AV Club interview,^[9] Redman hinted that there would be a second collaborative album with Method Man, with work beginning in midsummer or early September.

In early 2008, a remake of the Smoothe da Hustler and Trigger tha Gambler classic Broken Language was released to the internet by the duo entitled Broken Language 2008, fueling rumors of a Blackout! sequel coming soon. This rumor was further fueled by the duo while performing in Gainesville, Florida at the University of Florida. A Blackout! 2 LP was scheduled for a December 9, 2008 release but was recently pushed back to the first quarter of 2009, with a new release date on May 19. Bun B has confirmed that he will guest star on Blackout! 2 – in April 2009, a single has been released named City Lights, produced by Nasty Kutt ^[10] Also producers such as Erick Sermon, Rockwilder and Pete Rock have announced their presence on the album.

The duo has finished their Still High tour with Termanalogy, the Alchemist, and Evidence of Dilated Peoples.

[edit] 2011–present: Crystal Meth

Crystal Meth is Method Man's upcoming fifth studio album.^[11][12][13] The album has no confirmed release date. The Crystal Meth was first announced before Method Man began working on his and Redman's sophomore collaboration album, Blackout! 2. In the liner notes of that album, it was given a scheduled release date for 2009. The album, however, was further postponed until it was later mentioned in an MTV interview it would be released in early 2010.^[11] no update on the album's progress or release date has been made. At a concert on the 23 of December 2010 Method Man told the crowd to look for his album in March 2011. However the album was pushed back to an unknown release date.

In a recent interview with The Come Up Show following a recent performance in Canada in April 2011, Method Man replied with this regarding his current 'weed-loving' image:"When you get older and you've got kids and your kids are going to school and you know [their] teachers...and they see how active you are and concerned [you are] with your kids' education or well being, it's hard to sit there and be taken seriously if people are always talking about he's always high...which is totally not the case," he said. "When I first came out, I was young, we were doing our thing, we smoked a lot...and we didn't care if the world knew. Now, I have to use more discretion because of my kids. This is not for me; everything I do is for them now, so I use a bit more discretion and I don't put weed as a forefront any more."

On October 5, 2011, a new single from Method Man, titled "World Gone Sour (The Lost Kids)", was released on iTunes.^[14] Recently, he confirmed that the album will come out next year and will have the usual line-up of producers including RZA, Rockwilder, Erick Sermon, 3rd Digala of Digem Tracks and some other new underground producers he's begun to work with.^[15] He also expressed a desire to work with Odd Future frontman Tyler, The Creator.^[16] It was recently announced via Facebook that Crystal Meth will be his last album & to be fully produced by RZA.

Acting career[link]

In the early 2000s Method Man began a career in acting. He has had recurring roles in critically acclaimed television shows such as HBO's Oz as Tug Daniels, HBO's The Wire in which he plays Prop Joe's nephew Cheese, The Twilight Zone and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. He and Redman hosted a pilot on MTV called Stung. He has made numerous appearances as himself on TV shows such as Mind of Mencia and Chappelle's Show.

Method Man portrays Drops on CSI, a wealthy Las Vegas party promoter who clashes with the CSI team, specifically investigator Nick Stokes, in their investigations involving his clubs or entourage. His first appearance on CSI as Drops was in the 2006 episode "Poppin' Tags". He resumed the role in the 2007 episode "Big Shots" and again in the 2008 episode "Drops Out".

His first prominent role came in 1998 with the film Belly along with fellow rappers Nas and DMX. He has since added many credits to his name, including roles in the films Garden State, One Eight Seven, and many others, with starring roles in the feature films such as How High and Soul Plane. On March 27, 2007 Redman confirmed on BET's show Rap City that the sequel to How High was being written. The script for How High 2 is being written by Dustin Lee Abraham of CSI, who also wrote the first movie. In 2005 Method Man also had a cameo in the horror movie Venom, where he played a deputy who shortly into the movie is killed. He appears in the 2008 movies The Wackness and also, Meet the Spartans.

Method Man stars in the episode "Snitch" of Law & Order SVU as the main antagonist. The episode was first broadcast December 4, 2007.

Method Man has made an appearance in the Def Jam series of video games. In Fight for NY he voiced Blaze, one of the main characters. In Icon, he voiced Gooch, a major character in the storyline. In Underground, He voiced Meth, one of the major characters. He made a guest appearance in the music video for the 2003 "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys, where he played the role of her boyfriend. He also appeared in Beanie Sigel's music video "Feel It in the Air", where Method Man played an undercover cop leading an operation against Sigel.

Method Man has fallen back from pursuing more acting roles after the situation with his sitcom on Fox left a bad taste in his mouth,^[17] and now mostly just acts if the project is being handled by a friend of his, as was the case with CSI and The Wire. He also played an arsonist and a wealthy executive as well as main antagonist in an episode of the fox TV show The Good Guys.

Method Man appears as a hip hop business mogul in an episode of Burn Notice.

Method man had a cameo appearance in the 1997 film Cop Land as a physically violent fleeing criminal that throws Peter Berg's character off of a New York rooftop. Method Man has also appeared in the TV drama Wonderland, as a patient in a mental hospital.

Method man plays a small role in the 2011 film "The Sitter" starring Jonah Hill. In 2012 he played crewman "Sticks" in George Lucas' movie Red Tails about the Tuskegee airmen.

Other ventures[link]

Method Man appeared in the 1995 documentary entitled The Show. There is a memorable scene in which Method Man, on a train in Japan, gets into an argument with U-God and Ghostface Killah, over camera time, radio interviews, and clothing mishaps.

In 2006, Method Man appeared on the MTV reality game show Yo Momma in the first episode of Season 1.

Method Man is the first of the Wu-Tang Clan to produce a series of eponymous graphic novels for Hachette Book Group USA's imprint Grand Central Publishing^[18] (to be followed by GZA and Ghostface Killah).^[19]

Personal life[link]

He became engaged to his wife in 1999 and they married in 2001.^[5] He has three children: two sons (born in 1996 and 2001), and one daughter (born in 1997). Method Man also has collabed with Rochester rapper "Dale Mahoney" on his project "Jordans&Drugs" in 2012.^[20]

Legal issues[link]

On Thursday May 17, 2007 Method Man was arrested in New York City on marijuana charges. His Mercedes-Benz convertible was pulled over at the Battery Tunnel en route to Manhattan, and when he rolled his window down the officer noticed a strong smell of marijuana. "It was like something out of Cheech & Chong. He rolls down the window and the smoke would choke a horse," a source later said.^[21] The arresting officer said he noticed two blunts and a plastic bag with more marijuana in plain view. Upon further inspection more marijuana was found under the driver's seat. The arrest was made at about 10 P.M. Thursday night near the Battery Tunnel toll booths on Hamilton Ave. in Carroll Gardens. He was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, criminal possession of marijuana, operating a motor vehicle under the influence and driving an uninspected motor vehicle. He later made many public service appearances to try to make up for it, most notably at Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn.^[22]

On October 5, 2009, Method Man was arrested at his home in Staten Island for income tax violations.^[23] He was accused of failing to file income tax returns for the state of New York between 2004 and 2007 and owes nearly $33,000 in taxes. On June 28, 2010,^[24] Method Man plead guilty to tax evasion and was sentenced to a conditional discharge^[25] and paid a $106,000.00 fine.^[24]

Wu-Tang management[link]

In 2003, Method Man criticized Oli "Power" Grant and Mitchell "Divine" Diggs, the managers of the Wu-Tang business.^[26] "Number 1 on my shit list right now is Divine from Wu-Tang management. He took something major from me that he had no intention of giving back."^[27] Divine is multiplatinum record producer RZA's brother who along with Oli "Power" Grant took over the business end of Wu-Tang around 1997.

Aside from the financial issues, Method Man was unhappy with the decision to bring Wu-Tang into the fashion world for a brief period of time with Wu-Wear, despite the brand being a major money-maker for the group. "When Wu-Wear started making shoes and sneakers and pants, it was shoddy material. I never rocked that shit."^[27]

Wendy Williams[link]

In 2006 Method Man had a highly personal and highly publicized conflict with TV talk show host Wendy Williams on The Breakdown, an internet show on ONLOQ.com. Williams talked on air about Method Man's wife having cancer, which was something he had wanted to keep very private and even her own family members had not yet known about. He said that people who lived next door to him didn't even know, but Williams had dug it up and made it public over the radio. Because of this leaked information, Method Man and his wife had many problems.^[28]

Williams also reported rumors that Method Man had even been having an affair with his wife's doctor. Method Man first heard of this while in recording sessions in Los Angeles.

During a concert in 2006, Method Man criticized Diddy's decisions on the posthumous The Notorious B.I.G. Duets: The Final Chapter album, saying that Biggie never would have worked with some of the subpar rappers. "They got niggas on that album Big would have never rocked with," Meth said of the album. "Musically, I ain't fuckin' with Puff Daddy".^[30] He also brought up the fact that he was the only other rapper that Biggie chose to have on his debut album Ready To Die. He was featured on the track "The What".

Previously, Diddy had been one of the executive producers for Method Man's 2004 album Tical 0: The Prequel, to which Meth later voiced his displeasure on the final product. From then on, he focused on production from within the clan and its closely tied collaborators.

Fox Television[link]

He starred in a Fox sitcom called Method & Red in late 2004, however after only a short time on the air the show was put on hiatus and never returned. Method Man later complained in the press about Fox's influence on the show's style, claiming that "there's been too much compromise on our side and not enough on their side" and bemoaning the network's decision to add a laugh track.
