The hidden truth about Palestine - part (7/10)
This is part 7 of 10 of the film "Occupation101" ps: The movies in this channel are rated (R) by American media outlets for scenes of extensive exposure to the truth! A thought-provoking and powerful documentary film on the current and historical root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Unlike any other film ever produced on the conflict -- 'Occupation 101' presents a comprehensive analysis of the facts and hidden truths surrounding the never ending controversy and dispels many of its long-perceived myths and misconceptions. The film also details life under Israeli military rule, the role of the United States in the conflict, and the major obstacles that stand in the way of a lasting and viable peace. The roots of the conflict are explained through first-hand on-the-ground experiences from leading Middle East scholars, peace activists, journalists, religious leaders and humanitarian workers whose voices have too often been suppressed in American media outlets. The film covers a wide range of topics -- which include -- the first wave of Jewish immigration from Europe in the 1880's, the 1920 tensions, the 1948 war, the 1967 war, the first Intifada of 1987, the Oslo Peace Process, Settlement expansion, the role of the United States Government, the second Intifada of 2000, the separation barrier and the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, as well as many heart wrenching testimonials from victims of this tragedy. www.occupation101.com

Arafat saw that repeating the first Intifada... would put pressure on Israel, says PA leader Shaath
palwatch.org palwatch.org Transcript: Narrator: "The Camp David Summit [in 2000] failed, and [US President Bill] Clinton held Arafat responsible for the failure. This was a prelude to very grave events: Ariel Sharon invaded the Noble Sanctuary of Jerusalem (ie, the Temple Mount), and the Second Intifada, known as the Al-Aqsa Intifada, broke out on Sept. 28, 2000 as a direct response to this invasion. However, it was also an outburst against Israel's insistence over the years on suppressing the Palestinians and (speech unclear) their National Authority." Nabil Shaath, member of the negotiating team: "[Arafat] saw that repeating the first Intifada in new forms, would bring the necessary popular, international, and Arab pressure upon Israel, because it was already impossible to continue denying our right in Jerusalem and the right of the refugees, which are the two main topics [of conflict]." Dr. Mary King - The Quiet Revolution in the First Intifada (FSI 2010)
Dr. Mary King offers an overview of the remarkable and previously untold account of the first intifada as a massive nonviolent social mobilization. The Palestinians' deliberately chosen methods for resisting the Israeli occupation effectively debunk the widely held notion of the first intifada as violent. King discusses the decades-long spread of knowledge about nonviolent strategies throughout Palestinian society shaped the uprising, which was years in the making, and will offer details on the intifada's ability to continue despite harsh reprisals. Through the determination of thousands of "popular committees," often started and run by women, and the ability to sustain communities under curfew or strike, the nonviolent movement during the first intifada was a "quiet revolution" which emerged as the most cogent pressure to date to create a Palestinian state alongside Israel. The First Intifada - WPatterson
The First Intifada, from 1987-1993, was an uprising against Israeli security and military occupation facilitated by the Palestinians living in occupied territories in Israel. Its goals were to raise the cost of occupation, and to force Israel to consider nationalism for Palestinians. This was achieved through boycotts, stone-throwing and strikes. Tension had been building between the two nations ever since large Jewish populations started immigration to Palestine and Israel declared its independence in 1948. Palestinians were forced to pay taxes to Israel, while they were subject to army raids, random detentions, and denied basic civil rights. Palestinians' frustration had been simmering for years and the deaths of the Palestinians in Gaza on 9 December 1987 made it boil over. The Intifada was not led by a single person or group, but rather by small community groups that had their own agenda and provided education, food and medicine for fighters and civilians. The PLO and Hamas also had a part in the leadership of the first Intifada, but their involvement was minimal and limited to cities such as Beit Sahour and small portions of Bethlehem. Casualties were about 50-50 with both the Israelis and the Palestinians killing about 1000 Palestinians. The Israelis lost about 200 in total, most of them citizens. This attracted international attention. The United Nations Security Council Resolution 605 condemned Israel for the overt number of deaths that occurred in the first weeks ...

Bilin Weekly Demo 10.12.2010 By haithmkatib@gmail.com
Remembering the First Intifada, International Human Rights Day, and the Imprisonment of Abdallah Abu Rahme Today, December 10, 2010, Bil'in celebrated International Human Rights Day with a larger than normal demonstration through the village. Hundreds of supporters came from outside Bil'in to support the village's struggle for human rights, to mark the one-year anniversary of Abdallah Abu Rahme's imprisonment, and to commemorate the First Intifada. The demonstration was immediately fired upon with large amounts of tear gas from soldiers on several sides. The army had entered through the gate and were waiting in advance of the demonstrators. One Palestinian demonstrator was injured from tear gas, dozens suffered tear gas inhalation, and two were arrested -- one Palestinian, Abd al-Fattah Burnat and one German citizen. The demonstrators marched with flags from Palestinian movements and sang numerous songs calling for an end to occupation and settlements and Palestinian national unity. Many Palestinian leaders participated in the demonstration in solidarity with the residents of Bil'in, including Mustafa Barghouti, leader of the Mubadara Movement; Hisham Abo Riya, leader of the Palestine Liberation Front; Muheeb Awad, a Fatah leader and member of the Palestinian parliament; members and a leader of the Palestinian Popular Struggle Front; and many Palestinians from outside of Bil'in. They were joined by dozens of international and Israeli supporters.

intifada
Intifada (also Intefadah or Intifadah; from "shaking off") is an Arabic term for "uprising". It came into common usage in English as the popularized name for two recent Palestinian campaigns directed at ending the Israeli military occupation. These two uprisings have been significant aspects of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in recent years: The First Intifada began in 1987. Violence declined in 1991 and came to an end with the signing of the Oslo accords (August 1993) and the creation of the Palestinian National Authority. The al-Aqsa Intifada (also known as the Second Palestinian Intifada or the Second Intifada) was the violent Palestinian-Israeli conflict that began in September of 2000.

West Bank Street Art: Palestinian artists have been inspired by Arab Spring upheavals
Street art and graffiti have an important recent history as genres in the West Bank. During the first intifada, Palestinians took to writing and drawing on walls. While the first intifada ended, the practice of street art and graffiti continued. Some observers of the art scene in the West Bank see that, inspired by the enormous creative visual outpouring from the Arab revolutions, Palestinian street art has redoubled its energy in the last two years.
