Who Needs College Anyway? Our Country's Real Post-secondary Education Needs
President Obama set an ambitious new goal in his speech to Congress on February 24, 2009, proclaiming that by 2020, America will ...have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. But some experts, like author Charles Murray, dont think we need more Americans going to college. In his new book, Real Education: Four Simple Truths for Bringing Americas Schools Back to Reality (Random House, 2008), Murray argues that Americans place too much value on the bachelors degree. Murray and researcher Anthony Carnevale debated Who Needs a College Education Anyway? at the Hechinger Institutes Seminar for Higher Education Reporters in December 2008. Scott Jaschik of Inside Higher Ed moderated the debate. Murray, the WH Brady Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, contends that because ability varies and 50 percent of people are below average, our current system of higher education makes little sense. Carnevale, Research Professor and Director of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, argues we should encourage as many students as possible to attend and graduate from college, because intelligence isnt fixed at birth and can be influenced by education. After their remarks, Murray and Carnevale took questions from journalists participating in the Seminar.

Student Vision for Post-Secondary Education in Nova Scotia
In 2011 the Nova Scotia NDP government cut funding to universities by 4 percent and increased tuition fees by 3 percent. The Nova Scotia government doesn't seem to have a plan for post-secondary education in this province, but students do. To get involved in the Reduce Fees-Drop Campaign or send an email the provincial government asking them to invest in a well-funded and affordable post-secondary education visit www.cfs-ns.ca. And join students and our allies in the streets on February 1 for the National Day of Student Action.

Deveber Institute: Post Secondary Education and Parenting
The deVeber Institute's nationwide study of resources available to pregnant and parenting students on university campuses in Canada. Most women feel that if they become pregnant while attending a post-secondary school, they cannot both complete their education and proceed with the pregnancy. One way to analyze this option is to discover what kind of resources are available to this specific group of students. When pregnant and parenting students cannot find campus resources the message is clear: your time here is over. The deVeber Institute of Bioethics and Social Research compiled a survey that consisted of six categories: education, housing, child care, health care, child-friendly campus and financial aid. This survey was completed for each of the 86 registered Canadian universities and each university was asked the same questions. For more details of this study and The deVeber Institute please visit www.deveber.org

Spanning the Gaps to Post-Secondary Education
Spanning the Gaps to Post-Secondary Education, a program offered through Ryerson University's G.Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education, was developed based on the belief that education can break cycles of inter-generational poverty and social exclusion, and that higher education can transform lives and contribute to social cohesion, social stability, and a civic society. The program's goal is to increase post-secondary participation by young people and adults who might not otherwise interact with or experience post-secondary education. Produced by Digital Education Strategies at The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education, Ryerson University. Interest-Free Provincial Student Loan Program
A zero per cent interest rate on the Provincial Student Loan program will be implemented October 1, 2012. The program will apply to loans issued after January 1, 2001 and held by Prince Edward Island Student Financial Assistance Corporation. The savings on the average student loan in the first year of repayment will be approximately $1000. The announcement is a part of the Government of Prince Edward Island's ongoing commitment to all levels of education, including other post-secondary investments such as the George Coles Bursary and Graduate Scholarship, and new infrastructure for Holland College and University of Prince Edward Island. Closing the Gap: Post-Secondary Education
At 63%, Ontario has one of the highest rates of post-secondary education in the world. But the reality is that a full 70% of new jobs will require post-secondary. How can we close that gap? What can we do to improve quality and access? Is what we’re teaching today going to help fill the jobs of the future? And does our current mix of colleges and universities make sense in tomorrow’s world?

Transitions to Post-Secondary Education and Employment
Education Policy Breakfast Speakers:
Melissa Roderick

James Kemple, Discussant
Federal, state and local education policy seem to be aligning behind the goal of "college for all." This session will examine a range of questions about the nature, efficacy, and feasibility of this goal. What types of post-secondary credentials are most useful for productive participation in today’s economic, civic, and cultural institutions? How can we ensure that high school students have access to and then attain these credentials? Does the school-to-work transition need to lead through college? Is there a role for career and technical education in the preparation for transitions to post-secondary education and work? To what extent and how should high schools be held accountable for student outcomes after graduation?

Post Secondary Education Rehabilitation and Transition
The Postsecondary Education Rehabilitation Transition (PERT) Program, a collaborative program supported by the Virginia Departments of Education and administered through the Department of Rehabilitative Services at Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center (WWRC), is a highly effective school-to-work transition initiative for eligible youth with disabilities available to all Virginia local school divisions. The PERT Program operates from a best practices model in which youth and adult service providers partner to provide an integrated continuum of secondary to postsecondary transition services for participating clients. Parents and former PERT clients are integral members of the PERT Advisory Committee. PERT administrators work jointly with an interagency Transition Partners group which guides youth in transition efforts throughout the state.(PERT)
