Sediment Source or Provenance
In this video, I discuss some of the basic ideas about using sediment grain composition to identify the source of the sediment. This is called provenance analysis. If physical weathering dominates, the resulting sediment has the same composition as the original rock types, so one can distinguish volcanic from metamorphic sediment sources for example. Chemical weathering alters the composition of the grains, so it can be more difficult to identify the sediment source. However, some grains are resistant to chemical weathering and can still be used.

What is it ?
Sediment in a city water storage tank. Sediment can be a habitat for bacteria viruses and protozoa. Keeping your water storage tanks clean may be one of the most overlooked maintenance procedures in the water industry. Out of sight and out of mind, sediment in the bottom of your water storage tanks is never seen and rarely thought of. The sediment that builds up in almost all potable water tanks can be a habitat for bacteria and other contaminates like cryptosporidium. Contaminates can get a foothold in the sediment out of reach of the chlorine entering the tank. In 2005 the a National Assessment of Tap Water Quality was published by the Environmental Working Group found that water suppliers across the US detected 260 contaminants in water served to the public. Keeping your tanks clean is the best way to ensure the health of your water system. If you know someone who works for a water department or is on a city council, please pass this video along Visit www.ronperrin.com

Sedimentary Facies
Sedimentary facies are groupings of rocks used to highlight the most important features for a research question. Here, I describe the concept of facies and give a couple of examples. You can also see my lecture notes for facies in the second half of this blog posting: dawnssedstrat.blogspot.com

Changing a Sediment Water Filter Cartridge
www.waterfilters.net Aquaman demonstrates how to change a Sediment Water Filter Cartridge and offers some useful tips on general maintenance, including proper use of the spanner wrench, lubrication of the O-ring and housing threads, and proper cartridge changing procedure. Sediment filters are an easy and inexpensive way to improve the quality of your water as well as protect your expensive plumbing components from the damaging effects of sediment.Aquaman is a Water Quality Association Certified Water Specialist. RUSCO Spin Down Sediment Filter
www.waterfilters.net Aquaman interviews RUSCO product rep. Brad Anderson. This video is loaded with good info about RUSCO spin down and sediment trapper filter water filter systems. Every water softener should have a RUSCO pre-filter, as should every residential irrigation system. RUSCO sediment trappers are perfect for capturing 100+ micron particles. 100% reusable, the flush valve makes for convenient filter cleaning. just open the valve, purge out the collected crud and your back in business. They even offer an automatic flush valve for those wanting zero maintenance. RUSCO also offers high temp and chemical resistant products that we cover in another video.Aquaman is a Water Quality Association Certified Water Specialist.
