Substance Dualism (Part 1 of 2) [HD]
Examining the view that mind and body are separate substances. Note at 7:08 A reductio ad absurdum argument (one which attributes a machine with thought purely for the sake of argument, to demonstrate that genuinely absurd / contradictory consequences follow) would be valid. We can see immediately that Plantinga's thought experiment doesn't achieve this: failure to discern how a thinking machine is thinking indicates only lack of comprehension, not a genuine absurdity / contradiction. But his use of Leibniz' scenario isn't valid. Leibniz doesn't just propose a thinking machine, but one we can enter and inspect. If physical thinking things are impossible - as Plantinga claims - then whatever machine we conjure up in our imagination to enter and inspect, it can't be a genuine physical thinking thing, just as it would be impossible to inspect a machine that prints square circles. (Besides, if there's truly nothing we could be faced with inside the machine that would signal thought, it makes no sense to ask us to inspect it, since no inspection could help us discern thinking machines from non-thinking ones anyway.) It is this sense in which Plantinga cannot use thinking machines to show machines can't think. His argument is incoherent. It is certainly not a valid reductio ad absurdum. ------------------------------------------------------ Selected Resources: Humanoid robot Asimo demonstration: www.youtu.be Descartes, R - Discourse on the Method (1637) Eccles, JC - The Human ...

2. The nature of persons: dualism vs. physicalism
Death (PHIL 176) Professor Kagan discusses the two main positions with regard to the question, "What is a person?" On the one hand, there is the dualist view, according to which a person is a body and a soul. On the other hand, the physicalist view argues that a person is just a body. The body, however, has a certain set of abilities and is capable of a large range of activities. 00:00 - Chapter 1. "Is There Life After Death?" Asking the Right Question 13:25 - Chapter 2. Mind-Brain Dualism
Some thoughts about dualism (and they are just some thoughts with recommendations to expert opinions) in response to a video by and a exchange of text comments I had with LegoDesi. If you get an error message when trying to view the video, either hit the "HQ" button or, if that doesn't work, try adding &fmt;=18 to the URL for the video. One or the other usually solves the problem -- whatever the problem is. Hello, YouTube, maybe this could be fixed?! Michael Tooley on Property Dualism
Michael Tooley is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado-Boulder. His main research areas are metaphysics (time, causation, laws of nature) and the Philosophy of Religion (the argument from evil, miracles). In this clip, he discusses some problems with substance dualism, why he believes in property dualism, and why he does not believe in epiphenomenalism. en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia.org

Interpreting Descartes Dualism
Mind body dualism: The only thing I can know for sure, is: "I think, therefore I am" It is therefore possible for you and others to simply be phantoms, dreams, automatons. What if Descartes took it one step further? We perceive thoughts, just as other stimuli, but who is the perceiver? Descartes almost did "Insight Meditation," as it is known in eastern contemplative practice. A modern problem with the mind-body split: In current definitions, it appears as if we don't need the observer, the seer, thinkER. We define consciousness by its apparatus (thoughts/feelings). This raises a slight problem that has more to do with how we are understanding ourselves rather than consciousness itself. We are still hanging onto the idea that consciousness is an object of attention rather than attention itself. Note: This leads to other things... How scientists view consciousness, as an exterior "objectified" thing, while there is also an "interior" dimension, a within of things (Teilhard) that is immanent and universal at the same time. Worthy of another video....

Mind-body problem dualism & psychiatry 1/6
www.NiallMcLaren.com An overview of my work showing a natural dualist resolution of the mind-body problem for psychiatry which leads directly to a model of mental disorder. Remember, dualism does NOT necessarily lead to spiritualism and my model fits perfectly within the material realm. When most hear dualism they think of Descartes and thus Cartesian dualism which IS spiritual However, the philosopher David Chalmers outlined a material form a dualism, termed natural dualism, which is what my model builds upon. We must understand that the mind is non-reducible, similar to the computer program I'm using to make this lecture. There is of course the substrate/hardware which runs the function, but knowing all there is to know about this hardware/brain will never reveal the program/mind, and this is where biological psychiatry fails. Suppressing an output state (with medications) without fixing the cognitive processes that give rise to that mental state is an incomplete treatment paradigm. If you have any questions or comments on my work please feel free to post a comment, email me, post on my blog etc. I always to try to answer questions and entertain criticisms as this is the engine of scientific progress. MONISM VS DUALISM & PSYCHIATRY 1/4 DENNET & SEARLE
www.NiallMcLaren.com Niall McLaren- Psychiatrist and author of 'Humanizing Madness', 'Humanizing Psychiatry' and 'Humanizing Psychiatrists'. An explanation of the failures of the major monist models of mind in terms of their value for biological psychiatry. Daniel Dennett's functionalism and John Searles' biological naturalism are not monist at all, they are actually closet dualist theories in that the authors have retained the properties of a dualist model of mind even though they have given them different names. This is of major significance for biological psychiatry as there is now no possible explanation of mental disorder in a biological model. Note This is a lecture taken from my paper due out soon "Monist Models...." and from the first chapters of my new book 'Humanizing Psychiatrists.' If you want to learn more you can find links to my books on www.NiallMcLaren.com Most of my peer reviewed work can be found via links on my wikipedia page. John E. Mack, MD - Transcending the Dualistic Mind - Pt 1/12
The Current Crisis: Transcending the Dualistic Mind. The events of September 11th reflect a growing planetary crisis that is deeper than the attack itself or its social, political and economic causes: We in the West are trapped in a dualistic worldview that reduces reality to simple divisions of good and evil. In this talk, Dr. Mack discusses the explorations of the Center for Psychology and Social Change (now the John E. Mack Institute), especially the study of the UFO encounter phenomenon and other anomalous experiences, that are revealing the possibility of a unifying cosmology that transcends this dualism.
