Bonhams is today one of the world's largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. The present company was formed by the merger in November 2001 of Bonhams & Brooks and Phillips Son & Neale. This brought together two of the four surviving Georgian auction houses in London, Bonhams having been founded in 1793, and Phillips in 1796 by Harry Phillips, formerly a senior clerk to James Christie. Today the amalgamated business handles fine art and antiques in more than 60 specialist collecting areas. The firm has continued to grow and change since the merger in 2001. The last ten years have been among the most dramatic and fast-growing in its history.

In August 2002 the company acquired Butterfields, the principal firm of auctioneers on the West Coast of America, which had been founded in 1865 during the California gold rush.

Today Bonhams offers more sales than any of its rivals. There are two large salerooms in London: the former Phillips sale room at 101 New Bond Street, and the old Bonham's sale room at the Montpelier Galleries in Montpelier Street, Knightsbridge. There are also three regional sale rooms in Britain: Chester, Edinburgh and Oxford. Sales are also held in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Boston in the USA; in France, Monaco, Hong Kong and Australia. The Bonhams presence in Australia became a stand-alone operation in 2010. Bonhams & Butterfields conducted their first East Coast sale in 2003, in the Art Deco Fuller Building erected in 1926, and in 2005 opened a new sale room in Madison Avenue, New York, on the corner of 57th Street and Madison Avenue. It was formerly the home of the Dahesh Museum. New offices and sale rooms have also been opened elsewhere: a Paris office in June 2005 and an auction business in Hong Kong in 2009 to participate in the expanding Asian market. Bonhams are now established in 25 countries on five continents.

It is a remarkable story of rapid expansion which owes much to the energy and drive of Robert Brooks, formerly a director and department head at Christies, whose father had worked at Bonhams in the 1950s and 60s. Brooks had set up his own firm (Robert Brooks Auctioneers) in 1989 to sell classic and vintage motorcars. In 2000 he and his business partner, Dutch entrepreneur Evert Louwman, acquired the family-owned firm of Bonhams, creating 'Bonhams & Brooks'. This was the start of the major programme of acquisition and expansion which has continued since. When the European auction business of Phillips was merged with Bonhams the following year, the name was simplified to Bonhams. By the end of 2003 Bonhams was conducting 700 annual sales and had over 600 employees. Robert Brooks became and has remained the Chairman of the 'New Bonhams'. The deputy-chairman Colin Sheaf, European CEO Matthew Girling, and senior vice-president Patrick Meade, also came from Christies. The American division of the firm was developed by Meade and Group CEO Malcolm Barber, formerly of Sotheby's. So the senior team which has created the new Bonhams is composed almost entirely of experienced auctioneers.

Bonhams' 21st Century Headquarters is the former saleroom of Phillips in New Bond Street. A warren of 7 different freeholds, it was remodelled and refurbished in 2004 under the direction of the interior designer Claire Agnew. She was also responsible for the earlier redesign of the 1950s Montpelier Galleries in Knightsbridge, the old Bonhams headquarters. The Bond Street buildings are today a large complex stretching through to Blenstock House in Woodstock Street at the back, where the Art Deco polychrome elevation was designed in 1938 by Fuller Hall & Foulsham and forms a delightful view-stopper when viewed southwards from Oxford Street. The main elevation at 101 New Bond Street was designed by A-M Ridge in 1906 in grand Edwardian style. Pevsner described it as 'boastful'! A more ambitious reconstruction of this principal headquarters saleroom of the now-worldwide firm was started in autumn 2011; the first phase was completed in December of that year, and the finished building will be unveiled in the second half of 2013. It will create three large double-height new salerooms, preview galleries and a café as well as improved offices and workspace for Bonhams staff. This has been designed by the Award-winning architect Alex Liftschutz of Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands.

In 2009 Bonhams announced that it had taken market leadership in 10 key areas of the UK art market for the first time including Antiquities, Arms and Armour, Watches and Clocks, European Ceramics and Japanese art. It is now a worldwide auction house, which handles fine art and antiques in more than 60 specialist collecting areas. When it was founded in 1793 it was more narrowly focussed. In its early days it was one of the leading places for the sale of prints during the Regency heyday of print collecting in England. Thomas Dodd (1771-1850), the founder of the firm, was one of the most famous print experts and dealers of his day. He worked with Martin Colnaghi and catalogued many famous collections of prints including those of Horace Walpole. His greatest and most enduring work was the catalogue of the Douce Collection listing 50,000 prints in the Bodleian.

Dodd's expertise in engravings came from a love of drawing, a skill he acquired during an unconventional childhood spent touring the country as a member of noted eccentric Colonel Vaux's juvenile band. By the 1790s he had established a sale room in Tavistock Street, Covent Garden auctioning prints and in 1806 he moved to new auction rooms in St Martin's Lane. The venture was an immediate success and for the next decade he sold important print collections, including that of General William Dowdeswell in 1809. Dodd also tried his hand at publishing but his first venture, a 'Dictionary of Monograms' was pipped at the post by a French competitor, leading to his bankruptcy in 1817.

Faced with ruin, Dodd handed over the firm to his apprentice, George Jones, whom he had taken on in 1806 and trained in the auctioneering business. Jones's first major sale in October 1818 was to sell off the entire stock of his old master. The catalogue can be seen in the British Museum Print Room. (Dodd's connection with the firm was not over though, and after a spell in Manchester he returned to London in the 1830s to rejoin Jones in his new premises in Leicester Street, just off Leicester Square). Trading under his own name, George Jones continued Dodd's tradition of selling important print collections and several of his catalogues from 1817 onwards survive in the British Museum Print Room and in the Victoria & Albert Museum Library. In 1818, he secured part of the stock of the famous dealer Thomas Philipe, following the latter's death. In 1823 he sold the entire stock of another well-known deceased print dealer, Anthony Molteno; and in the same year he sold the collection of the lawyer and politician, Lord Glenbervie, in a three day sale.

Many of these sales were enormous. In May 1824, for instance, a typical print sale consisted of 20,000 impressions as well as engraved copper plates. The material handled at this time was both ancient and modern, English and Continental. George Jones was joined by his son (Alphonso) Henry Jones, who continued the business in Leicester Street. In the 1850s Henry went into partnership with George Bonham, and the company became known as Jones and Bonham. This was the beginning of the firm's association with the Bonham family which was to last for five generations. The Bonhams came from Whittlesbury in Northamptonshire where Samuel Bonham was a gamekeeper. His son John, born in 1815, was appointed Deputy Keeper of the Dulwich Picture Gallery, the origins of the family's links to the art world.

During the 1840s the company had started handling paintings as well as prints, and then metalware and jewellery. Later nineteenth century sales, varied from Delft, Wedgewood and Worcester china, brassware, arms and armour, furniture and carved oak to 'High Class Wines', paintings, prints and oleographs. This expansion required more space and the company moved to 410 Oxford Street (renumbered 65 Oxford Street in 1880). In 1861 the plain Georgian shop premises were rebuilt with fashionable Italian façades. Inside, a series of auction rooms stretched right through to the houses on the north side of Soho Square.

In 1879 the Bonham family bought out the remaining Jones interest in the business, and the firm then became Messrs W & FC Bonham, comprising the partnership of Frederick Charles Bonham and his nephew William Bonham. In 1899, a new deed of partnership brought in Alfred, Frederick John and Albert Charles John Bonham, the sons of Frederick Charles.

The lease of the Oxford Street premises terminated in 1926, and Bonhams moved to 14 Burlington Street where the company stayed until 1940 when the building was bombed. The firm then moved to its secondary gallery at 19 Whitfield Street off Tottenham Court Road, which had been acquired in 1935. A mere ten days later, however, these premises were also bombed and all the firm's records lost in the fire. Temporary accommodation was found in Newman Street for the rest of the war but in 1945 Bonhams moved to 213-217 Knightsbridge where the company was based for four years. Then the Montpellier Street salerooms were built on the site of a Georgian chapel. These new premises were designed by J Newton-Smith of Haynes & Carpenter and opened in 1954.

In 1943 the company had been formed into a private limited company - W and FC Bonham & Sons Ltd - and it started to expand with the growth of the London art market. In 1958 premises were opened in Lots Road Chelsea for sales of secondary furniture, pictures and household effects, where 400 to 500 lots were sold each week after viewings on Sundays. Amongst the world's expanding number of fine art auctioneers, the firm remained fourth largest for the next four decades, first under the direction of Leonard Bonham and then in the 1970s and early 1980s under that of his son Nicholas - the last of the eponymous family to hold office at Bonhams. Two of the founding Directors of Christie's South Kensington, Christopher Elwes and Paul Whitfield, joined Bonhams in 1986 and Christopher immediately assumed the role of Managing Director, a position he held until the acquisition by Robert Brooks and Evert Louwman in 2000 and the initiation of twelve years of expansion which have created the present world-wide auction house.

Jason John Bonham (born 15 July 1966) is an English drummer. Jason's parents are Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham and Pat Phillips. After his father's death in 1980, he played with Led Zeppelin on different occasions, including the Ahmet Ertegün Tribute Concert at The O2 Arena in London in 2007.

Biography[link]

He first began playing drums at the age of four, and appeared with his father in the film The Song Remains the Same, drumming on a scaled-down kit.^[1] At 17, he joined his first band, Airrace. In 1985, he joined Virginia Wolf, making two albums and touring the U.S. supporting the Firm.

In 1988, Bonham joined former Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page for his Outrider album and tour. In May of the same year, Bonham appeared with the three surviving members of Led Zeppelin for a performance at Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert in New York.

In 1989, Bonham appeared as a special guest at the Moscow Music Peace Festival, performing the song "Rock and Roll" with many major rock stars of the day. That same year, he formed his own band, Bonham, whose Zeppelin-inflected first release The Disregard of Timekeeping had a hit single, "Wait for You" and the music video for the subsequent single "Guilty" did get some play. However, after a lukewarm reception for their 1992 release, Mad Hatter, the band was dissolved, and Bonham concentrated on session work and guest appearances.

On April 28, 1990, Bonham married Jan Charteris, in Stone, Kidderminster. His wedding reception included a jam with Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones. The Bonhams have two children, a son named Jager, and a daughter, Jaz.

Bonham drummed for Paul Rodgers on the Grammy nominated Muddy Water Blues: A Tribute to Muddy Waters project. A year later with Slash and Paul Rodgers, he appeared at Woodstock II in 1994. Bonham reformed his band with a new lead vocalist, Marti Frederiksen, replacing Daniel MacMaster. Renamed Motherland, they released the album Peace 4 Me later in 1994. However, his down-to-earth nature always showed—on one occasion making an encore drumming appearance for local Led Zeppelin tribute bands Fred Zeppelin and Led Zepagain.

In 1995, Jason represented his father when Led Zeppelin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with his sister Zoe by his side. Bonham soon put together another solo project which culminated in In the Name of My Father - The Zepset, which featured the songs of Led Zeppelin. Proceeds from the album went to charity. The album followed up with When You See the Sun.

Following an album and tour with his aunt Debbie Bonham, Jason Bonham was invited to drum for hard rock group UFO. In 2006, he recorded with Joe Bonamassa.

Jason Bonham also appeared in the movie Rock Star, 2001. Bonham played drummer A.C., of the fictional band Steel Dragon. The film also featured performances by musicians such as Zakk Wylde, Jeff Pilson, Myles Kennedy, Brian Vander Ark, Blas Elias and Nick Catanese. He also played on the film's soundtrack.

Bonham starred with Ted Nugent, Evan Seinfeld (Biohazard), Sebastian Bach (Skid Row), and Scott Ian (Anthrax) on the VH1 reality television show, Supergroup, in May 2006. The musicians formed a band called Damnocracy (after ditching the names FIST, God War, and Savage Animal) for the show, during which they lived in a mansion in Las Vegas for twelve days and created music. Jason also played drums live with Foreigner from 2004 to 2007 and part of 2007 to 2008.

Bonham joined the group Black Country Communion late in 2009 and is currently recording music with rock icons Joe Bonamassa, Glenn Hughes and Derek Sherinian.

In 2010, Bonham formed Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience, a live homage to his father's band, which toured worldwide through 2011.^[2]

Bonham has produced his own line of signature series drumstick with Pro-Mark. The SD531W is made of American Maple with acorn shaped, wooden tips. The taper is relatively short and the sticks have considerably large dimensions, being 16.75" (42.5 cm) in length and 0.595" (1.5 cm) in diameter. The sticks also feature the symbol; used by Bonham's father, John Bonham; of the three interlocking rings - they are printed next to Jason's signature on the side of the stick.

Led Zeppelin reunion[link]

On 12 September 2007, it was announced that Jason Bonham would step into his father's shoes and play drums for a Led Zeppelin reunion concert. This took place on 10 December 2007 at London's O₂ arena as part of an all-star tribute to Ahmet Ertegün.^[3][4][5] His performance was described as "flawless" by music critics.^[6]

Brian Tichy (born on August 18, 1968 in Denville, New Jersey) is an American musician, best known as having been drummer for Whitesnake, Billy Idol, Foreigner, and Ozzy Osbourne. He has been the drummer of Whitesnake since 2010. Tichy began playing drums at age eight and started playing guitar at age 12. His earliest influences include Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Aerosmith, AC/DC, and Van Halen.

After attending Berklee College of Music from 1986 until 1990, Tichy has toured/recorded with a multitude of artists including Billy Idol, Ozzy Osbourne, Seether, Velvet Revolver, Foreigner, Pride & Glory, Glenn Hughes, Sass Jordan, Slash's Snakepit and most recently Whitesnake

Brian also played the New Jersey club scene in the late 1980s early 1990s with a great grunge cover band called "Aluminum Jew" along with Jeff Steele Zugale on Vocals/Guitar, Chris Durante on Guitar and Steve Witschel on Bass.

While Brian has primarily toured and recorded with others playing drums, he has fronted his own band (BALL) in which he sings and plays guitar. Due to the untimely demise of his record label (Time Bomb Recordings), Ball’s American Aggression CD never was formally released. Ball did manage to release a CD, The Grand Human Disaster Scenario (only in Japan) in May, 1999. This CD contains what were essentially the demos that led to the record deal with Time Bomb at the end of 1999. His increasing role as co-songwriter with Billy Idol that started at the end of 2003 limited his time to focus on Ball.

Billy Idol[link]

The Idol/Tichy writing partnership sparked the recording of Billy Idol's first CD since 1993. Devil's Playground (Sanctuary Records) was recorded in 2004 and contained 8 Idol/Tichy tracks. The CD was released in March 2005 and they toured for the remainder of the year.

While writing in 2006 for a follow up Idol CD, Brian and Billy recorded a Christmas album. This was done on their own, in Idol and Tichy's rehearsal studio with Tichy performing drums, guitar, and bass, as well as engineering and co-producing. Happy Holidays by Billy Idol was released in November, 2006 through Best Buy and in Europe.

Foreigner[link]

Brian joined Foreigner in 1998 and remained until 2000. He rejoined briefly in 2007 substituting for Jason Bonham. He then returned from 2008 until 2010, recording the album Can't Slow Down. He returned for one show in summer 2011, substituting for Mark Schulman, who had recently lost his father.

Recent projects[link]

Brian toured with Foreigner through spring 2009 and recently completed a multi-year involvement with Billy Idol. Brian was also involved with drum sessions, writing with Derek Sherinian, writing music for television and film via MasterSource Music Catalog, as well as filling in on drums for Seether in April 2007 while Seether drummer John Humphrey was unavailable. He has also recently filled in for Foreigner drummer Jason Bonham who has been with them for a couple years. Tichy has also just finished recording drums for European female metal singer Marya Roxx with producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Journey, Dream Theater, Black Crowes) which included Derek Sherinian (Billy Idol, Yngwie Malmsteen), Paul Crook (Meat Loaf, Anthrax) and Scott Metaxes (Nuclear Assault). On September 25, 2010 Brian organized, produced and played in the drummer tribute "Bonzo, The Groove Remains the Same", celebrating the 25th anniversary of the death of John Henry Bonham, legendary drummer for Led Zeppelin. Over 25 of the best Rock and Roll drummers performing today came together and played their favorite Zeppelin tunes, including Jason Bonham. Brian surprised them all by having an exact replica of the John Bonham drum kit for all to play, complete with a giant gong and tympani. Brians own group, "The Moby Dicks" made up the house band during the tribute, as each drummer took their turn on the legendary drum kit. Video's of the event can be found on Youtube. Brian is currently touring with Whitesnake. In 2011, Tichy formed S.U.N. (Something Unto Nothing) as guitarist, with vocalist Sass Jordan, bassist Michael Devin, and drummer Tommy Stewart. Marty O'Brien replaced bassist Devin in 2012.

Speed bag[link]

Brian became a speed bag enthusiast while on tour with Foreigner and quickly got with some of the best speed baggers around to learn and increase his own skills. During the 2009-2010 tour with Foreigner, Brain hung several speed bag wall units inside the bands equipment truck and created the infamous "Speed Bag Truck", hosting area speed bag enthusiasts from various areas when the band played in their town. Some of the best speed bag talent in the U.S. joined Brian in the truck before concerts, punching away. Soon after, he began promoting his own punching skills via his YouTube^[2] videos for both physical fitness, and also as a musical instrument. He always planned to incorporate the speed bag into his drumkit, which was first unvieled during his appearance on "That Metal Show" on VH-1 classic, in April 2012, using a UBS1 freestanding floor frame from Balazboxing. This is the first known inclusion of a speed bag by a professional drummer as a rhythm instrument in a major public appearance, and should be noted as an important date in speed bag history.^[3]
