Pope Meets with Heads of the Roman Curia
This morning, Benedict XVI met with the cardinals and archbishops who head the various dicasteries of the Roman Curia. This meeting takes place on a regular basis to address issues of common interest. The particular focus of today's discussions was the new Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization, chaired by Archbishop Rino Fisichella. During the morning there was an exchange of views and suggestions concerning the dicastery's objectives, activities, initiatives and other arrangements to be implemented in collaboration with other dicasteries. The meeting was held in the Sala Bologna, a hall commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII, who on the occasion of the Jubilee of 1575 had the hall decorated and de ...

Pope And Roman Curia Begin Weeklong Spiritual Retreat
Benedict XVI has suspended all of his public appearances as he goes with members of the Roman Curia on the traditional weeklong spiritual retreat for Lent. Spiritual exercises on the retreat were led by the former head of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria. He preached on the theme of "The Priest Meets Jesus and Follows Him." Cardinal Arinze said that the priest plays a more important role in the daily lives of his flock than the local bishop or even the Pope. Card. Francis Arinze Prefect Emeritus, Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments If every priest is full of faith, full of love, and manifestations of faith and love which we can call devotion, our Sunday celebration will become what it can become. And that will be the beginning of a spiritual renewal both in the priest and in the parish. The days of retreat followed the rhythm of the Liturgy of the Hours and also included three meditations. Participants at the retreat celebrated the Eucharistic adoration and benediction every evening. Cardinal Arinze says that the liturgy is of central importance to the life and purpose of the Catholic Church. Card. Francis Arinze Prefect Emeritus, Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments Liturgy is important because that is the prayer life of the Church. The Church prays, Christ leads the Church in prayer. If the Church no longer offered worship to God ...

Pope and the Curia end Spiritual Exercises
On Saturday morning the Lenten retreat for the Pope and the Roman Curia came to an end. The spiritual exercises in preparation for Easter, which had started on Sunday 21 with the exposure of the Eucharist and the celebration of Vespers, were held throughout the week in the "Redemptoris Mater" chapel of the Apostolic Palace, with morning and afternoon sessions in the presence of Benedict XVI. During the week, all papal audiences, including general Wednesday, were suspended. The meditations were given by Salesian priest, Enrico dal Covolo, who was thanked by the Pope. The theme was: "Lessons of God and the Church on the priestly vocation."

Cardinal Marc Ouellet - Witness
The Roman Curia has always had a distinctly Italian composition. But under the pontificate of Benedict XVI, several non-Italians have assumed key posts in the central government of the Roman Catholic Church. One of those people is Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet, former Archbishop of Quebec and now the Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

Christmas: God enters into history
Christmas is drawing near. Speaking on Monday to the Roman Curia, Benedict XVI recalled the most significant moments of his visit to Jordan and the Holy Land this year, in particular the ceremonies that were held at the places where Jesus had lived, died and rose again. It was like coming in contact with the story of Gods relationship with us, he said. This reality of the faith is especially good for us in the labors of the present time.God has truly shown himself. In Jesus Christ, He has truly incarnated. And as the Risen One, He is truly Man, continually making God accessible to humanity. He is the constant guarantor that God is a God who is near, who continuously calls us to reconciliation, making ...
