World Water Day - Restoring the Danube River and Black Sea
The most international river basin in the world, the Danube River basin, includes territories of 19 countries. Over the past 150 years, agricultural, industrial and municipal pollution severely damaged the ecosystems in the basin and the quality and quantity of water. The impact on the environment was so massive that a 'dead zone' caused by oxygen depletion formed in the western part of the Black Sea. An international plan, with support of UNDP, helped to restore the river basin and revive the Black Sea ecosystem upon which millions depend for their livelihoods. UNDP identified the major sources of pollution, developed an investment strategy and strengthened institutions that govern the Danube River basin. The UNDP-GEF 49,5 million USD programme helped to catalyze 3,5 billion USD investments into reforms of governing institutions and systems, and into new agricultural and industrial practices. As a result, an effective trans-boundary waters management programme was implemented during the 1990's. The strategic plan and incoming funding enabled the countries along the Danube to monitor and improve water quality and quantity by establishing 75 water quality monitoring stations throughout the basin. With the support of the programme, the governments instituted a damage control system to minimize accidental chemical spills and agreed to reduce nutrient pollution. Through these reforms and investments, industrial, municipal and agricultural pollution was reduced, virtually ...

Beginning in Germany and flowing eastward through much of Central Europe, the Danube River gives cruise passengers the opportunity to see a part of Europe that is not included in a typical European vacation itinerary. Beautiful cities like Budapest, Vienna and Prague have rich histories and heritages mixed with a modern culture, making a visit to these parts of Central Europe extraordinarily unique. Excursions onshore include visits to imposing castles and majestic basilicas, as well as quiet wineries. When floating along the river, travelers get a view of everything from steep hillsides to small towns dotting the landscape to bustling cities positioned right along the bank. With something for everyone, Avalon's Danube River Cruises are the perfect way to have a vacation experience you will never forget.

Iron Gate (Danube) 鐵藝門(多瑙河)
Iron Gate (Danube) 鐵藝門(多瑙河) DJERDAP LOCK on the DANUBE RIVER: The construction of the joint Romanian-Yugoslavian mega project that would finally tame the river commenced in 1964. In 1972 the Iron Gate I Dam was opened, followed by Iron Gate II Dam, in 1984, along with two hydroelectric power stations and two sluices. The Iron Gates is a gorge on the Danube River. It forms part of the boundary between Romania and Serbia. In the broad sense it encompasses a route of 134 km; in the narrow sense it only encompasses the last barrier on this route, just beyond the Romanian city of Orşova. The gorge lies between Romania in the north and Serbia in the south. At this point, the river separates the southern Carpathian Mountains from the northwestern foothills of the Balkan Mountains. The Romanian, Hungarian, Slovakian, Turkish, German and Bulgarian names literally mean "Iron Gates" and are used to name the entire range of gorges. An alternative Romanian name for the last part of the route is Defileul Dunării, "Danube Gorge". In Serbia, the gorge is known as Đerdap (Ђердап), with the last part named Đerdapska klisura. The Romanian side of the gorge constitutes the Iron Gates natural park, whereas the Serbian part constitutes the Đerdap national park.

Toxic sludge reaches Danube river, eco disaster spreading outside Hungary
Officials from several nations along the Danube, downstream from Hungary - Croatia, Serbia and Romania - have been testing the river on Thursday, hoping that the river's huge water volume would blunt the impact of the Hungarian red toxic sludge spill. Europe's second longest river, Danube flows through Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Moldova before emptying into the Black Sea. The toxic sludge burst out of a metals plant reservoir and flooded three villages in Western Hungary, killing at least four people, injuring 120 and leaving three missing. It reached the mighty river Danube on Thursday, but a Hungarian emergency official said no immediate damage was evident. Experts are expecting contamination levels to peak over the weekend.
