Theater Talk: Legendary Composer Charles Strouse, Pt. 1
Legendary composer Charles Strouse ("Annie," "Bye Bye Birdie") is interviewed at the piano and performs a number of his hits including "Put On A Happy Face," "Applause," and from "Golden Boy": "I Wanna Be With You" and "Stick Around." Part 1 of 2. Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins. The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.) The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts. An Evening with Charles Strouse | The New School
THE NEW SCHOOL FOR DRAMA | newschool.edu New School President Emeritus Bob Kerrey and Robert LuPone, director of The New School for Drama, engage in an informal discussion with Charles Strouse, acclaimed composer, lyricist, and arranger. Charles Strouses music has been an integral part of American culture for more than 40 years. His first Broadway musical, Bye Bye Birdie (written with longtime collaborator Lee Adams), won him a Tony Award for best score. In 1970, Strouses Applause (starring Lauren Bacall) won him his second Tony, and his 1977 hit, Annie, earned him a third Tony and two Grammy awards. Other musicals include: Golden Boy, It's a Bird ... It's a Plane ... It's Superman, and Rags. Film scores include Bonnie & Clyde, The Night They Raided Minskys, and All Dogs Go to Heaven. In addition to composing for musicals and film, he has written orchestral works, chamber music, piano concertos, and opera. He also wrote the theme song Those Were the Days for the television show, All in the Family. Strouse studied under Aaron Copland and Nadia Boulanger. In 1977, he founded the ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop in New York. He is the recipient of both the Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein awards and a member of the Theater Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. His new book, Put on a Happy Face: A Broadway Memoir, was released in June 2008. Tomorrow from Annie by Charles Strouse, performed by Leslie Roman (10)
Remember to [subscribe] to our Channel for new music every week! Musipire student Leslie Roman at age 10 performs Tomorrow from the Broadway show, Annie, written by Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin. Piano accompaniment by Mr. Wei Chiu The sun is coming out with Leslie's sweet voice! As our vocal student, she opened for the latest Musipire Honor Student Concert as the first act. While slightly nervous, her talent still apparent to the spectators in the auditorium, and now to YouTube viewers! Leslie has definitely had her share of Broadway show wonderment, having watched a handful of shows with her school and family -- a good way for family bonding. We are very glad to see that a student can find joy and build their skill in music at such a young age. Musipire Media would like to thank Leslie and family for participating in our beautiful OUTDOOR shoot, and as she continues her vocal studies, we can't wait to hear her on the big stage in the future!
