How to Avoid ATM 'Card-Trapping' Theft
KnowBe4.com - Did you know that thieves are actually stealing ATM cards from the very machines we use to get money from the bank? By placing a small device on the slot used by ATMs to avoid skimming (another method of theft) these crafty thieves can actually make away with your card. They grab your PIN by either looking over your shoulder or placing an otherwise unnoticeable overlay on the buttons that captures your impression when entering your pin. Once you've walked away from the ATM to call the bank and complain and have your card deactivated, it only takes seconds for the thief to retrieve your card and grab your cash. KnowBe4, a leader in security and fraud prevention through education, has advised everyone to take some additional steps to avoid becoming a victim of this form of theft. First, only use ATMs at your bank and/or a trusted branch near you. ATMs sitting outside of a club or at the corner of a busy street are prime targets for would-be thieves that would take advantage of the lessened security at those locations. When an ATM appears to keep your card, call your bank immediately and don't leave the ATM. Have your card deactivated right there, and don't leave until it's done. ATMs do keep cards from time to time as a security measure, especially if a PIN was entered incorrectly on multiple occasions, but you shouldn't assume anything before leaving the ATM. www.lockergnome.com You can find out more about KnowBe4 and their services by visiting their website ...

Customers disappointed with DBS ATM card security - 24Feb2012
SINGAPORE: DBS Group said on Friday that there has been no significant increase in requests from customers to have their ATM cards replaced. This follows Thursday's statement that the bank had been hit by another round of unauthorised ATM withdrawals. On 19 February, 17 customers were affected and they lost S$23000. The bank said customers can help to lower the risk of unauthorised withdrawals by changing their PINs at any of its ATMs. The bank said it reimbursed the affected customers within 24 hours and de-activated the ATM cards and those of other account holders it felt were at risk. One of the affected customers was 24-year-old Goderic Tia who received an SMS from DBS Bank on February 20 to inform him that his ATM card has been deactivated. The bank however did not provide a reason on why it did so. Mr Tia said: "The bank just said that it (the card) was deactivated and they will give me a waiver to get the replacement card. The bank should explain on February 20 and make a personal call to consumers. I think it is only responsible. They delayed it for four days before releasing it (the news) to the public." The bank said no other unauthorised withdrawals have been made over the past few days. It added that the latest incident, which is under investigations, was related to the same card skimming operation in which about S$1 million was stolen from 700 customers in January. Some of the bank's customers expressed their concerns. One said: "I can only say that the ...
