Grant was fatally shot by BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle. The shooting was captured on video by other BART passengers and was then played on the evening television news.
On New Year's Day, the Sacred Mountain Defenders concluded a prayer vigil begun on December 23rd on San Francisco Peaks in northern Arizona. The mountain is sacred to the Navajo and other Southwest tribes. The Sacred Mountain Defenders also filed a complaint about the Arizona Snowbowl ski resort's use of recycled, treated sewage effluent to make artificial snow on the mountain.

Community activist and Bikes 4 Life bike shop owner Tony Coleman, his neighbors, and the staff of the bike shop, held their third annual barbecue and holiday bike giveaway outside the shop on 7th Street in West Oakland, and remembered Baby Hiram, a child the neighborhood lost in December 2011, just before his second birthday, to gun violence. The event was held outside Bikes 4 Life, by the Hiram Tree planted earlier this year in honor of Hiram Lawrence Jr.
