Hi I'm Alina Wang and welcome to Discovering China. Your guide the five thousand year history of the middle kingdom. Coming up this week. Traditional Chinese Medicine in Australia, the government now recognizes the practice. The story of Da Mo, one of the major figures in Chinese Buddhism. One Chef who is reviving traditional Cantonese cuisine. 1 In March this year, Australia became the first Western country to nationally recognize traditional Chinese medicine. Margaret Trey now takes a look at the Australian scene, in which traditional Chinese medicine practitioners join the national registration board to receive national accreditation, alongside other mainstream health professionals. 2 Da Mo was the monk who established Zen Buddhism at the Shaolin temple in China, he is also considered the father of Shaolin Kung Fu. Ben Hedges now brings us the story of this famous historical figure. 3 We now go to Hong Kong, where one Chef is rediscovering some of China's traditional dishes. Street food is ready-to-eat food or drink sold in a street or other public place, such as a market or fair, by a hawker or vendor, often from a portable stall. While some street foods are regional, many are not, having spread beyond their region of origin. Most street foods are also classed as both finger food and fast food, and are cheaper on average than restaurant meals. Today, people may purchase street food for a number of reasons including ethnic taste, nostalgia, and the opportunity to eat quickly obtained, reaonably priced and flavorful food in a sociable setting. Historically, in places such as ancient rome, street food was purchased because urban poor did not have kitchens in their homes. Health and safety Despite concerns about contamination at street food vendors, the incidence of such is low with multiple studies showing rates comparable to restaurants. As early as the 14th century, government officials oversaw street food vendor activities. With the increasing pace of globalization and tourism, the safety of street food has become one of the major concerns of public health, and a focus for governments and scientists to raise public awarenesses.
