Ajanta Caves.....MAHARASTRA
The Ajanta Caves (अजिंठा लेणी), Maharashtra, India are 29 rock-cut cave monuments which date from the 2nd century BCE. The caves include paintings and sculptures considered to be masterpieces of both Buddhist religious art (which depict the Jataka tales) as well as frescos which are reminiscent of the Sigiriya paintings in Sri Lanka. The caves were built in two phases starting around 200 BCE, with the second group of caves built around 600 CE. Since 1983, the Ajanta Caves have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The caves are located in the Indian state of Maharashtra, near Jalgaon, just outside the village of Ajinṭhā(20°31′56″N 75°44′44″E). Caves are only about 59 kilometers from Jalgaon Railway station (on Delhi - Mumbai, Rail line of the Central railways, India); and 104 kilometers from Aurangabad (From Ellora Caves 100 Kilometers). The Ajanta Caves were carved in the 2nd century BC out of a horseshoe-shaped cliff along the Waghora River. They were used by Buddhist monks as prayer halls (chaitya grihas) and monasteries (viharas) for about nine centuries, then abruptly abandoned. They fell into oblivion until they were rediscovered in 1819. On 28 April 1819, a British officer for the Madras Presidency, John Smith, while hunting tiger, accidentally discovered the entrance to one of the cave temples (Cave No. 9) deep within the tangled undergrowth. Exploring that first cave, long since a home to nothing more than birds and bats and a lair for other, larger, animals ...

Ajanta - Prof Walter Spink explores Ajanta - produced by Laurence Castle
Ajanta: Written in the Stone - documentary The Ajanta cave system in Western Central India is considered by many to be the Eighth Wonder of the World. Lost for 1400 years, they were discovered by a British officer while tiger hunting in 1819. The 30 Buddhist caves cut into a basalt scarp are a treasure trove filled with remarkable sculpture and paintings, they open a window to life in ancient India. Almost fifty years ago, a young upstart from the USA began to stir up the conservative Indian Art History world. Walter Spink (now a Professor Emeritus with the University of Michigan) was asking questions that made the establishment uncomfortable. Half a lifetime later, his findings, the results of exhaustive and innovative detective work, has shaken the most sceptical of his peers. The dramatic events that shaped Ajanta, hailed the end of India's Golden Age. His controversial findings provide a window into the dramatic events that shaped this long lost world. What Professor Spink has discovered, changes the history of India. Duration: 60 minutes. AJANTA
A man continues to enjoy himself in paradise as long as long as his memory is green in this world declares the patron Harisena on cave 26 One should endeavour to build a memorial on the mountain ranges of Sayadhri that will endure for as long as the moon and sun shines This is what Harisena along with his hired artisans along with the Buddhist monks strived in the Ajanta valley till 477 AD, when it was abandoned with a sudden loss of motivation beyond comprehension. Why Ajanta was abandoned is a mystery explored by many a historians. The entire Ajanta complex was probably inhabited by Neolithic mankind prior to Buddhist monks discovering the safe den for their monastic living. They began construction of the famous 30 cave complex in early 2nd Century BC. For almost 350 years they were surveying the area and laying the basic foundation for a grandiose plan for building an edifice eulogizing Lord Buddha. In 450 AD in Harisena they found a willing sponsorer to trigger the building activity and completing the cave viharas and chaityas. The lovely mural paintings were completed using the locally available vegetable dyes and other binding materials such clay etc. ACK video courtsey MTDC

World Heritage Monuments of India,Ajanta Caves & Ellora Caves, Part 1.
Also visit my blog : www.malaviya999video.blogspot.com http www.malaviya999sayingsandquotes.blogspot.com The Ajanta Caves (75°40' N; 20°30' E) are situated at a distance of 107 km north of Aurangabad, the district headquarters. The caves attained the name from a nearby village named Ajanta located about 12 km. These caves were discovered by an Army Officer in the Madras Regiment of the British Army in 1819 during one of his hunting expeditions. Instantly the discovery became very famous and Ajanta attained a very important tourist destination in the world. The caves, famous for its murals, are the finest surviving examples of Indian art, particularly painting. The Ellora caves, locally known as 'Verul Leni' is located on the Aurangabad-Chalisgaon road at a distance of 30 km north-northwest of Aurangabad, the district headquarters. The name Ellora itself inspires everyone as it represents one of the largest rock-hewn monastic-temple complexes in the entire world. Ellora is also world famous for the largest single monolithic excavation in the world, the great Kailasa (Cave 16). The visit to these caves is enjoyed maximum during monsoon, when every stream is filled with rainwater, and the entire environ is lush green. The monsoon is not only a season of rains in this part, the local visitors are attracted to visit these ideal locations to have a glimpse of the mother nature in full bloom.

On 28 April 1819, a British officer for the Madras Presidency, John Smith, while hunting tiger, accidentally discovered the entrance to one of the cave temples (Cave No. 10) deep within the tangled undergrowth. Exploring that first cave, long since a home to nothing more than birds and bats and a lair for other, larger, animals, Captain Smith scratched his name in on one of the pillars. Still faintly visible, it records his name and the date, April 1819. Shortly after this discovery, the Ajanta Caves became renowned for their exotic setting, impressive architecture, historic artwork, and long-forgotten history.
