The Burnside Breechloading Percussion Carbine Rifle
The Burnside Breechloading Percussion Carbine Rifle is examine on this edition of NRA News Curator's Corner with John Popp and Phil Schreier, Senior Curator of the NRA National Firearms Museum. The Burnside Carbine, named after General Ambrose Burnside, was patented and produced four-five years before the Civil War started. Quite innovative for the time, the percussion and breechloading rifle takes a self contained metallic cartridge...something only one other gun did at the time. Between 1857-1865, 50000 Burnside carbines were produced in five different models. A few fun facts about this rifle: it was a favorite of the Union forces; it's one of the only guns made in Rhode Island; and General Burnside went on to become the NRA's first president upon its founding in 1871. Tune in to discovery the whole tale behind the Burnside Carbine. To find more than 10000 zoomable images of the 3000 firearms at the museum, visit the NFM's website, www.NRAmuseum.com. www.NRAnews.com (episode aired 8-9-12)

Burnside Bridge at Antietam
A tour of Burnside Bridge, a key factor in the Battle of Antietam, Sept 17th 1862. A few hundred Georgia riflemen held off the Union troops of Gen Ambrose E Burnside for most of the day. This delay prevented McClellan's Army of the Potomac from winning a potentially conclusive victory over General Robert E Lee's Army. Please take a look at Video History Today www.videohistorytoday.com , the first web site to offer unique collections of re-usable original video clips designed for teachers and students. The idea behind Video History Today is to give schools the raw material to make mini-documentaries and video essays on historical subjects. Initial packages focus on World War I (Somme and Ieper areas), The Holocaust, the American Civil War and D-Day & Normandy 1944.

The Battle Attack on Fort Sanders civil war reenactment2011.wmv
The Attack on fort sanders,In the predawn hours of november 29,Confederate General james longstreet launched an assault on the northwest corner of the fort held by the troops of Gen.Ambrose Burnside.Because they had occupied the union trenches around midnight, there was no element of surprise. Brief artillery barrage to soften the fort's defenses was not effective ,Confederate troops also had no way to mount the walls of the fort.Union engineer Orlando poe had made the ditch around the fort 6 to 8 feet deep with no berm for attack troops to get a hand or foothold. The attackers had no idea the northwest bastion was a death trap.BATTLE lasted only 20 minutes, the ditch trapped some from escaping at lest 128 were killed in ditch area.Longstreet left knoville on december 4th.SEE ALSO: BATTLE OF CAMPBELL'S STATION. 31u

The Battle of Campbell's Station and Fort sanders Civil War Reenactment 2011.wmv
The battle of campbell's station on november 16,1863 Confederate General james longstreet had his best opportunity to attack Federal forces while they were away from their defenses in knoxville at "fort sanders".Since Novemeber 15th union General Ambrose Burnside had been fighting a delaying action as he retreated from lenoir city along the loudon road.Longstreet split his forces that were pursuing Burnside and sent half of them along Kingston road in a attempt to get ahead of the federals troops .His plan was to trap them at the intersection of the two roads. It was a race to Campbell's Station.Longstreet neglected to send a small cavalry force connected with his infantry marching down kingston road.Federal troops arrived at the intersection first.Union wagons and artillery streamed through the intersection..Federal forces formed a defensive postion near present day farragut and prepared for the attack from longstreet's seasoned veterans.SEE ALSO:THE BATTLE ATTACK OF FORT SANDERS 2011. 31u

Battle of Fredericksburg - 150th Anniversary Event
I was one of the Federal "casualties" on Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg Virginia on December 8, 2012. I was a part of the 69th New York of the Irish Brigade. In 1862, wave after wave of Federal Troop attacked the Confederate position behind a stone wall on Marye's Heights. They were killed by the thousands in one of the most intense fights of the war. The Federals were commanded by Ambrose Burnside, who made the mistake of waiting too long to cross. His delay was caused because the pontoon bridges necessary to take the large army across the Rappahannock River had not arrived by the time that Robert E. Lee, commanding the Confederates, had reinforced the town. It was a crushing defeat for Burnside and the Federals.
