Why is there no Kurdistan? #shorts #geopolitics #maps #politics #countriesoftheworld
With about 40 million people, the Kurds are the largest ethnic group without their own state, but why? The Kurds' settlement area spans many countries, but most of them live in Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Iran. A Kurdistan encompassing most of this population would stretch across many states and take up large portions of their territory, and that's where we come to our problem because none of these states have any interest in giving up territory. Turkey, for example, could lose up to 18% of its population, a huge chunk of land, and the resources that go with it.
And since Kurdistan would span so many states, it is in the interest of all these states not to allow a Kurdish independence movement. Because once it establishes itself in one country, it could spread to other countries. For this ...

Sultan I. Baybars, Şam’a bir nâib-i saltanat ve kaleye bir emîr tayin ederek şehirde Memlük idarî nizamını kurdu.
Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun onuncu padişahı Yavuz Sultan Selim’ in Doğu’da hakimiyetini artırması; Filistin, Mısır, Suriye, Arabistan ve Afrika’nın Kuzeyi’ ne hâkim olan Memlük Sultanı Kansu Gavri’ yi ha...

For this reason, Turkey is fighting Kurdish forces even outside its borders, because it wants to prevent a Kurdish state that could eventually lay claim to much of Turkey's current territory.
Thus, a modern Kurdish state is unlikely to emerge any time soon, although it should be said that Kurds in northern Iraq do enjoy some autonomy.

SUMMARY
=======
Eyalets (Ottoman Turkish: ایالت, pronounced [ejaːˈlet], English: State), also known as beylerbeyliks or pashaliks, were a primary administrative division of the Ottoman Empire.
From 1453 to the beginning of the nineteenth century the Ottoman local government was loosely structured. The Empire was at first divided into provinces called eyalets, presided over by a Pasha of three tails (feathers borne on a state officer's ceremonial staff). The Grand Vizier was responsible for nominating all the high officers of State, both in the capital and the provinces. Between 1861 and 1866, these Eyalets were abolished, and the territory was divided for administrative purposes into Vilayets. The eyalets were subdivided into districts called livas or sanjaks, each of which was under the charge of a Pasha of one tail, with the title of Mira-lira, or Sanjak-bey. These provinces were usually called pashaliks by Europeans. The pasha was invested with powers of absolute government within his province, being the chief of both the military and financial departments, as well as police and criminal justice. At official functions, the order of precedence was Egypt, Baghdad, Abyssinia, Buda, Anatolia, "Mera'ish", and the Capitan Pasha in Asia and Buda, Egypt, Abyssinia, Baghdad, and Rumelia in Europe, with the remainder arranged according to the chronological order of their conquest.

Sultan I. Baybars, Şam’a bir nâib-i saltanat ve kaleye bir emîr tayin ederek şehirde Memlük idarî nizamını kurdu.
Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun onuncu padişahı Yavuz Sultan Selim’ in Doğu’da hakimiyetini artırması; Filistin, Mısır, Suriye, Arabistan ve Afrika’nın Kuzeyi’ ne hâkim olan Memlük Sultanı Kansu Gavri’ yi harekete geçirdi ve birtakım tedbirler almaya itti. Osmanlı’nın etki alanını genişletmesinden rahatsız olan Memluk sultanı, Çaldıran’da Yavuz Sultan Selim’e yenilen Safevi hükümdarı Şah İsmail’le ittifak yaptı. Durumdan haberdar olan Yavuz Sultan Selim, Kansu Gavri ’ye elçi yollayarak Halep’in kuzeyindeki Merc-i Dabık mevkiinde savaş için hazır olmasını bildirdi.
Merc-i Dabık’ ta karşılaştı.

Ancient City of Aleppo (UNESCO/NHK)
Located at the crossroads of several trade routes from the 2nd millennium B.C., Aleppo was ruled successively by the Hittites, Assyrians, Arabs, Mongols, Mamelukes and Ottomans. The 13th-century citadel, 12th-century Great Mosque and various 17th-century madrasas, palaces, caravanserais and hammams all form part of the city's cohesive, unique urban fabric, now threatened by overpopulation.

Syrian rebels extend shock offensive after capturing Aleppo | BBC News
Rebel fighters in Syria have been pushing south after capturing the country’s second-biggest city Aleppo. They have occupied more towns near the city of Hama.
The surprise offensive marks the most significant fighting in Syria's civil war in recent years. The rebels are led by the Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham as well as allied factions backed by Turkey. Syria's defence ministry said it was reinforcing defensive lines in the region with troops, rocket launchers and heavy military hardware.
Russia, which backs Syria’s President Assad, has been carrying out air strikes on the rebels’ new positions, according to observers. It’s reported that 12 people were killed in a strike on a hospital in Aleppo, while a strike on the north-western city of Idlib is said to hae killed...

The fall of Aleppo, explained
How a modern-day massacre happened — and why America sat on the sidelines.
In December, after an extended siege and a month of intense fighting, Bashar al-Assad’s forces seized control of the rebel-held eastern half of Aleppo. A withdrawal agreement allowed thousands of rebels and civilians to evacuate — but not before Assad’s forces massacred and tortured an unknown number of people. The Assad victory was a humanitarian disaster and a devastating blow to the embattled anti-government rebels — and something that was in the works for over a year. The above video explains why.

As part of the cradle of civilisation, Syria has been inhabited for thousands of years, becoming a melting pot of cultures, ethnicities, and religions that exist to this day. But air strikes by the Assad regime and Russia decimated historical sites, most notably in Aleppo. Yunus Demiroglu explores the archaeological remains of one of Syria's most important cities.

The Syrian government has lost control of its second city, Aleppo, for the first time since the country’s civil war began.
Led by Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), opposition forces have seized the city and are pushing south, observers told news agency AFP.
In a statement, President Bashar al-Assad vowed to "defend [Syria's] stability and territorial integrity in the face of all terrorists and their backers".
Russia, an ally of Assad, has carried out "a series of air strikes" in Syria early on Sunday.

It’s reported that 12 people were killed in a strike on a hospital in Aleppo, while a strike on the north-western city of Idlib is said to hae killed eight civilians and wounded more than 50.
Syria’s ally Iran also said it was offering support to President Assad and his armed forces.

Syria & the Fall of Bashar al-Assad - Why Assad's military folded and what's next
Sponsored by: Private Internet Access: https://www.piavpn.com/Perun
The al-Assad family ruled Syria for more than 50 years. The Syrian civil war has continued for 13.
And yet, when the Assad Government ended, it did so in less than two weeks, with the army largely folding in the face of a surprise opposition offensive and Assad himself fleeing to Moscow.
The future of Syria is now highly uncertain and beyond the ability of a one hour video to fully explore. But there are still question worth exploring now as the situation continues to play out.
Why did Assad's military crumble, and what are the potential strategic implications for one of his most significant backers?

A History of Islamism
The story seems relatively simple. We drop bombs, this reinforces anti-western stereotypes and provides fertile soil from which Jihadism grows. These current Western obsessions with foreign fighters and Jihadi expansionism are not new, and of course there is a deep intertwining of jihadism with Western interests, and thus our own sense of identity. So how are we to view what’s going on? And what import does this have for those interested in European, or ‘White’ identity?

Ancient Subversion: The Philistines and the Palestinians
Ethno and religio-centrism dominates the historiography of the Levant, and this has lead to deception and subversion.
But this subversion is not only a modern phenomenon. It has been going on for over 2000 years.
The Philistines, the namesake of the Palestinians, were a Canaanite tribe, and possibly even a member group of the multiethnic Phoenician Empire, which peaked during the time of the biblical narrative.
Efforts to subvert and demonize the Philistines continue to this day, but originated when the Hebrew Bible was authored, most notably during the reframing of the biblical historical narrative which took place during the Deuteronomistic Reform of the 6th and 7th centuries BCE.
These efforts are almost invariably linked to modern attempts to subvert the indigeneity and national...

Iraqi food making kebabs from lamb is the most popular street food
Kebab is a widely available food in Iraq and in general street food. It is prepared from minced lamb. In some places, lamb and beef are minced with fat using grilled skewers and grilled over charcoal or wood. In many countries, kebabs are called "grills". The origin of kebab is an Aramaic word. The origin of kebabs goes back to the famous Aleppo kitchen, where the people of Aleppo were the first to prepare kebabs. History records the people of Aleppo's fondness for many types of grills and their uniqueness with the types of luxurious kebabs that have spread in many countries. It has its own flavor in Iranian street food, for example, saffron is added to lamb and beef before grilling over charcoal. The varieties and seasoning methods of Turkish street food differ from city to city. There is...

The story seems relatively simple. We drop bombs, this reinforces anti-western stereotypes and provides fertile soil from which Jihadism grows. These current Western obsessions with foreign fighters and Jihadi expansionism are not new, and of course there is a deep intertwining of jihadism with Western interests, and thus our own sense of identity. So how are we to view what’s going on? And what import does this have for those interested in European, or ‘White’ identity?

These efforts are almost invariably linked to modern attempts to subvert the indigeneity and national identity of the Palestinians, thus justifying the Zionist takeover of Palestine in the 20th century, almost 2000 years after the Jews were largely expelled from the Levant region.

Saving the Ancient and Medieval Treasures of Syria and Iraq

4:00 PM - 5:30 PM

MEMS COLLOQUIUM LECTURE
Michael D. Danti, Assistant Professor of Archaeology, Boston University; Consulting Scholar, University of Pennsylvania Museum; and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London
Syria and Iraq are facing the worst cultural heritage crisis since the Second World War. Michael Danti's talk will address one of the greatest challenges: the cultural cleansing perpetrated by the so-called Islamic State (or ISIS) and the work of the American Schools of Oriental Research to safeguard cultural assets.
The American Schools of Oriental Research Cultural Heritage Initiatives (ASOR CHI) work with Syrians and Iraqis to safeguard cultural sites and objects from neglect, damage, destruction, and theft as part of a program developed with the U.S. Department of State. Among the many atrocities perpetrated by ISIS is the deliberate destructions of historic mosques, churches, schools, monasteries, and cemeteries, as well as numerous famous monuments at archaeological sites such as Palmyra, Nimrud, Nineveh, Hatra, and the Old City of Mosul. ISIS brazenly commits these war crimes to advance its radical ideology and gain global media exposure. At the same time, the organization funds its terrorist activities through the looting of cultural property from archaeological sites, museums, libraries, and private collections. Irreplaceable ancient and medieval heritage, embedded in the urban fabric and daily life of modern communities, is endangered as extremists erase cultural memory, manipulate cultural identity, and eliminate cultural diversity.
Bio:
Michael D. Danti is an archaeologist who specializes in the ancient Near East. His interests center on the emergence of complex societies, agropastoral economies, tribe-state relations and pastoral nomadic societies. He directs archaeological projects in Iraqi Kurdistan and Syria, focusing on the Bronze and Iron Ages. From 1991 to 2010, Dr. Danti’s research focused on the Early Bronze Age site of Tell es-Sweyhat near Raqqa and Aleppo on the Euphrates River. He is a principal investigator for the American Schools of Oriental Research's Cultural Heritage Initiatives (ASOR CHI). ASOR is an international, collaborative effort to respond to the destruction of cultural heritage in Syria and northern Iraq. Groups of concerned citizens in Syria and Iraq have been taking action, and ASOR's international team has formed alliances and partnerships with these groups.
