Wilson Pickett - Duane Allman - Hey Jude
Hey Jude LP 1968 This video and song capture a unique time in American music history, when black soul and southern rock'n'roll legends worked together making incredible music, without concern for the racial turmoil raging through the country in the mid to late 60's. Music had no color, and in Fame Studios, Muscle Shoals, Alabama, it was the music that mattered most of all. Wilson Pickett came to Fame Studios in late 1968 and early 1969, where he worked with a band that featured guitarist Duane Allman, as well as drummer Ronnie Hawkins and bass player David Hood. "Pickett came into the studio and I said we dont have anything to cut. We didnt have a song", explained Rick Hall in Sky Dog: The Duane Allman Story. "Duane was there and he came up with an idea. By this time he had kind of broken the ice and become my guy. So Duane said "Why dont we cut Hey Jude?" I said "Thats the most preposterous thing Ive ever heard. Its insanity. Were going to cover the Beatles? Thats crazy!" And Pickett said "No, were not gonna do it." Both Hall and Pickett attempted to talk Allman out of the idea of remaking Hey Jude, but the young slide guitarist remained adamant on his choice of record for Pickett to cut. The fact that we would cut the song with a black artist will get so much attention, it will be an automatic smash, Allman told Rick Hall, who agreed to cut the song with Picketts blessings as well." "Duane began to thump around on his guitar, and we were standing in the studio listening ...

Duane Allman - Herbie Mann - Push Push
Herbie Mann - Push Push 1971 This video and song capture a unique time in American music history, when black soul and southern rock'n'roll legends worked together making incredible music, without concern for the racial turmoil raging through the country in the mid to late 60's. Music had no color, and in Fame Studios, Muscle Shoals, Alabama, it was the music that mattered most of all. The Fame Studio's session players featured guitarist Duane Allman, as well as drummer Ronnie Hawkins and bass player David Hood. They played on many varied artists records, but made their most memorable music with soul musicians like Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett. Duane's work on Wilson Pickett's album "Hey Jude" got him hired as a full-time session musician at Muscle Shoals and brought him to the attention of a number of other musicians, such as guitar great Eric Clapton, who later said, "I remember hearing Wilson Pickett's 'Hey Jude' and just being astounded by the lead break at the end. ... I had to know who that was immediately — right now." In a short time, Skydog became equal to the most prominent musicians of his time. His work with Clapton (as part of Derek and The Dominos), Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, John Hammond Jr., Herbie Mann and King Curtis displayed Duane's breadth and scope of ability. Equally vital was the insight of the offstage talents: Tom Dowd, Jerry Wexler and Rick Hall. While at Muscle Shoals, Allman was featured on releases by a number of artists, including ...

WoF 5/10/10: Great Start to State Fair Week; Sony Studios Hall of Fame
A couple of reasons why I'm uploading this: A) This set looks awesome. Too bad after Dads & Grads next week (or maybe including that - not sure) it's back to "Great Northwest" etc. for the rest of the season. The standard black set really looks worse compared to when they pull out all the stops on weeks like this. B) It's been 20 days since the last clip, the only one since April Fool's. A decidedly bold Wild Card risk ended up winning the game when he had the chance to use it as well. C) Post-BR coolness. I always love it when we have time for these features. Doesn't always have to be Pat & Vanna talking for a minute (and some people think they've become stale especially for too long anyways). One month and a day to go - the last stretch here. Can we manage some more good maingame action, and maybe even find the 100k again after that late March surge?

Otis Redding - You Left The Water Running
Otis Redding's classic recording of "You Left The Water Running." From Wikipedia - "You Left the Water Running" is a soul music song written by Dan Penn, Rick Hall and Oscar Franks. It has been recorded by Wilson Pickett, Maurice and Mac and most notably by Otis Redding. Redding's connection to the song is documented by music journalist Dave Marsh in his 1989 book The Heart of Rock and Soul. In 1966, Redding was visiting FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama when studio owner Rick Hall requested Redding help them with an upcoming session. Wilson Pickett was to record "You Left the Water Running", and Hall wished for Redding to record a demo to assist with the production. A simple recording was made and Redding made some overdub additions, and Pickett made his recording similar to Redding's version. Ten years later, Marsh was mailed a promo copy of "You Left the Water Running" by Otis Redding on Stone Records (the flipside was an instrumental called "The Otis Jam", which was produced by John Fred, of "Judy in Disguise (with Glasses)" fame). Marsh was fascinated by the song, and mentioned the new single to several friends, including his attorney, who also happened to represent the Otis Redding estate. He soon found out that Stone Records had not obtained the Redding family's permission to release the long lost demo recording, and demanded the single be pulled from circulation. When Marsh asked the label's distributor what was to become of the single, he was informed that ...

Wilson Pickett - Hey Jude (w/ Duane Allman)
Before there was The Allman Brothers Band, Duane Allman was trying to attract any kind of attention and make a name for himself. The music business is hard you know. Though immortalized now as one of the greatest guitarist of all time, it was Gregg who was more sought out in the record business in the early days. So Duane made ends meet by being a session guitarist in studios while he decided what his next move would be. It was in November of 1968, when Wilson Pickett - already a star - showed up at Rick Halls Fame Studio in Muscle Shoals, AL wanting to record, but with no material or ideas. Duane, who was working for Rick but was not even the main, lead session guitarist....yet, suggested that they cut "Hey Jude", which Rick thought was "the most preposterous thing" he had ever heard and Wilson agreed they would NOT do it. The Beatles had just recently released it and it was climbing the charts. But Duane somehow convinced them both it was a good idea because it "was" a Beatles song and it "would" be Number 1. And, as you hear, it was a GREAT idea. This song sparked the beginning of Duane's future nickname and the formation of ABB. The story goes that Duane was already known as "Dog" because of his looks. As you might imagine, the hippie look that Duane sported was few and far between in late 1960's Alabama. When Wilson heard the way Duane played he started calling him "Sky Man". Not just for his "out of this world" playing but also for his "out of this world" state of ...

The Allman Brothers Band - Don't Keep Me Wonderin - A&R; Studios 1971
This was recorded live at A&R; Studios, New York, on August 26, 1971 and broadcast in stereo on WPLJ-FM. The objective of the broadcast was to promote their "Live At Fillmore East" album. The show was recorded two weeks after the death of King Curtis, who was a great friend, and a huge influence to the late, great Duane Allman, who also, tragically lost his life in a motorcycle crash in Macon on October 29, just two months after this show. During the broadcast, Duane pauses to reflect on his late friend: About King Curtis - that was one of the finest cats there ever was. He was just right on top of getting next to young people, you know? Its a shame. If yall get the chance, listen to that album he made out at Fillmore West Boy, its incredible, its unbelievable, the power and the emotional stature the man had. Hes an incredible human being". The group was founded in 1969 by Duane Allman (b. Nov. 20, 1946-d. Oct. 29, 1971) on guitar; Gregg Allman (b. Dec. 8, 1947) on vocals and organ; Forrest Richard ("Dickey") Betts (b. Dec. 12, 1943) on guitar; Berry Oakley (b. Apr. 4, 1948-d. Nov. 12, 1972) on bass; and Claude Hudson ("Butch") Trucks (b. May 11, 1947) and Jaimoe (Johnny Lee Johnson) Johanson (b. July 8, 1944) on drums. Duane Allman began working as a session guitarist at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL, and it was there, appearing on records by Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, John Hammond, and King Curtis, among others, that he made his reputation. In 1969 Allman gave ...

Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music (live 1967)
Conley was born in McIntosh County, Georgia and grew up in Atlanta. He first recorded in 1959 as the lead singer of Arthur & the Corvets. With this group, he released three singles in 1963 and 1964 ("Poor Girl", "I Believe", and "Flossie Mae") on the Atlanta based record label, National Recording Company. In 1964, he moved to a new label (Baltimore's Ru-Jac Records) and released "I'm a Lonely Stranger". When Otis Redding heard this, he asked Conley to record a new version, which was released on Redding's own fledgling label Jotis Records, as only its second release.[citation needed] Conley met Redding in 1967, but after this meeting Redding took Conley under his care, and taught him the finer points of the music industry. Together they re-wrote the Sam Cooke song "Yeah Man" into "Sweet Soul Music", which, at Redding's insistence, was released on the Atco-distributed label Fame Records, and was recorded at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. It proved to be a massive hit, going to the number two position on the US charts and the Top Ten across much of Europe. "Sweet Soul Music" sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.

Three units, which are resembling standard record players, translate concentric visual patterns into control signals for further processing in any music software. The rotation of the discs, each holding three tracks, can be synced to a sequencer.
The Soundmachines premiered on the Volkswagen New Beetle stand at the IAA motor show in late Summer 2011. In cooperation with the sounddesigner/producer Yannick Labbé of TRICKSKI fame, we developed three unique discs, each controlling one track of an Ableton Live Set exclusively made for the Event. The show was supported by a set of realtime generated visuals, running on a 25m wide LED wall.

850 METERS is an "after hours" project, an animated comedy short currently in production, produced by THURISTAR and Lunanime, with the support of the VAF.
The film tells the QUEST of a FAME-AND-FORTUNE-hungry, wannabe hero, in a not-so-fairy tale!
A not-so-brave KNIGHT is on a QUEST for FAME and FORTUNE – legend says rescuing a princess is the way to go. And in those same fairytales, there’s only one way to slay the dragons that hold the fair lady captive: find the INVINCIBLE SWORD !
To reach his goal, the knight is ready to go FAR. Maybe even as FAR as 850 meters…
850 METERS will be sent to festivals starting in 2013. As we move forward with the production of the short, THURISTAR is producing a ‘making-of’ of the film. The idea is to follow the work of our small team ‘behind the scenes’, through short episodes, each of them featuring a different production step.

To Strive for Fame
My entry to the Brickfilms/BrickFest Contest 2006 "Fame, Infamy, Glory." Much to my satisfaction, this film placed 3rd overall, putting me into prize contention, behind two other awesome films deserving of their higher placement ("Grace" and "Beast," in that order). I barely beat another worthy film (High Tower's "Edison") by about 0.5 points.

Muscle Shoals - Official Trailer
www.muscleshoalsmovie.com http www.facebook..com Located on the banks of the Tennessee River, Muscle Shoals... Alabama is the unlikely breeding ground for some of the most creative and defiant music in American history. Under the spiritual influence of the "Singing River" as Native Americans called it, the music of Muscle Shoals is some of the most important and resonant of all time. "I'll Take You There", "Brown Sugar", "When a Man Loves a Woman", "I Never Loved A Man the Way That I Loved You", "Mustang Sally", "Tell Mama", "Kodachrome", and "Freebird" are just a few of the tens of thousands of tracks created there. At its heart is Rick Hall who founded FAME Studios. Overcoming crushing poverty and staggering tragedies, he brought black and white musicians together to create music that would last for generations while also giving to birth to the unique 'Muscle Shoals sound' and the rhythm section 'The Swampers'. In this film legendary artists including Aretha Franklin, Greg Allman, Bono, Clarence Carter, Jimmy Cliff, Mick Jagger, Etta James, Alicia Keys, Wilson Pickett, Keith Richards, Percy Sledge, Steve Winwood and others bear witness to the magnetism and mystery of Muscle Shoals and why it remains a global influence today.
