Where before two communities on different sides of the US-Canadian border functioned as one, 21st century security concerns have created a divide marked by sensors and cameras. The centuries-old border community of Derby Line in the United States and Stanstead in Canada still features a public library intentionally built to straddle the two nations' border, but locals say the two sides are spending less time together. With the border cutting right through town, residents now have to worry about border patrol agents responding if they cross their backyard fence or turn down the wrong street. Al Jazeera's Scott Heidler reports from Derby Line.

Journalists targeted in Mexico border town
The border city of Reynosa is Mexico's new front on the war on drugs. A growing turf battle between drug cartels has terrorised locals and the situation has deteriorated to the extent that residents are afraid to go outside, even during the day. Journalists are also fearing for their lives after some reporters were targeted by gangs. The US-based Committee to Protect Journalists is now calling on the Mexican government to investigate a series of kidnappings of reporters covering the drug war in the area. Franc Contreras reports (11 Mar 2010).

Calexico: The Untold Stories of a Bordertown
This is a documentary about my hometown Calexico, California. Calexico has a unique problem that only border towns have. Many people from the neighboring city across the border go to Calexico to benefit from a better job, education, or even goods bought in the United States. The fact that they are privileged enough to go back to Mexico on a daily basis is what affects the city in terms of resources. Schools are overcrowded and the unemployment rate is at an all time high. This video expresses these concerns and offers a solution that can get us closer to a better future. People need to understand that, without an education, the city is not going anywhere. Everyone will be fighting for the low-income jobs instead of careers that can make a difference in the community. Calexico doesn't get too much attention so it is my job to make this video reach as many people as possible and spread the awareness of the struggles people in the border have to endure.

ZHANG: Today's top story... two American journalists have been detained by North Korean security officials while filming near the border town of Dandong. Residents on the Chinese side of the border are concerned about the journalists well-being. STORY: Dandong is a border town in China's northeastern Liaoning Province. A diplomatic source says the reporters were on the frozen Tumen River further north in Jilin Province. The media quoted a South Korean government official as saying the North Korean guards had crossed the border into Chinese territory to make the arrests. But the diplomatic source said it is not clear which side of the border they were on at the time. [Qiao Yingli, Local Resident]: We don't know much about what happened during this incident. The main thing is that we do not know why they were detained. Anyway, detaining journalists is not the right thing to do. [Huang Gang, Local Resident]: "I think it is a wrong thing for them to do to the US and China. If they (North Korea) had acted like this in our territory, there is a kind of disrespect to us." A media source says the two women were working for Current TV, a US-based online news company. In Washington, a State Department official says the United States contacted North Korean authorities. The arrests come at a time of mounting tension on the Korean peninsula. But still, residents hope the matter will be resolved peacefully.
