Bream Bay
Bream Bay is a locality and bay on the east coast of New Zealand. Captain James Cook named this area to the bay itself, but also the some surrounding locations, stretching north to Whangarei and southbound touching Mangawhai. However, 'Bream Bay' is loosely used as a collaboration of the three major towns that satellite the main metropolitan area which are Ruakaka, One Tree Point and Waipu. The physical bay itself geographically spreads from the mouth of Whangarei Harbour (Bream Head), 22 kilometers south, to the southern most point of Waipu Cove (Bream Tail). The area also inhabits 3 native reserve islands, located just off the coast of Bream Bay, The Hen and Chickens Islands and Sail Rock Island.
Bream Bay was named by Captain James Cook after noticing that the bay's waters were populated a vast number of Bream, although it is now thought he was mistaken with snapper). He also named, in the same vein, Bream Head and Bream Tail which are the areas at the very top and bottom of the bay itself.

Hikurangi
Hikurangi is a settlement in Northland, New Zealand. The city of Whangarei is 17 km to the south, and Kawakawa is 39 km northwest. The Glenbervie Forest is southeast of the settlement. State Highway 1 once passed through the town, but now bypasses it to the west. Mount Hikurangi is a volcanic dome rising 365 m to the west of the town. It is 1.2 million years old, and part of the Harbour Fault which also includes Parakiore near Kamo, and Parihaka in Whangarei.
The population was 1,422 in the 2006 Census, unchanged from 2001. Hikurangi is a service town for the local dairy industry.
An area of 12,000 acres (49 km2) of land at Hikurangi was purchased from local Maori by the District Commissioner of Lands in 1862. The land was considered desirable because it contained mature timber and high quality flax, and transport routes were established. The area became a timber milling centre with the establishment of a road to Whangarei in 1875, and the first of several sawmills soon after.Kauri gum-diggers were also active in the area.

Horahora, Whangarei
Horahora is a suburb on the southwestern side of Whangarei, in Northland, New Zealand.
The population was 1,026 in the 2006 Census, an increase of 45 from 2001.

Hātea River
The Hātea River is a river of New Zealand. It flows from the north-east of Whangarei southwards and into the northern head of Whangarei Harbour. Its lower length forms the eastern boundary of the city. The banks along the lower reaches are parks and bushland with a series of metalled walks suitable for all weathers.
At Whangarei Falls near Tikipunga, the Hātea River drops 26 metres (85 ft) over a basalt lava flow. The falls, originally known as Otuihau, have been a picnic spot since at least the 1890s.
The spelling of the river's name was amended from Hatea to Hātea by the New Zealand Geographic Board in 2007.

Kaitaia
Kaitaia is a town in the far north region of New Zealand, at the base of the Aupouri Peninsula which is about 160 km northwest of Whangarei. It is the last major settlement on the main road north to the capes and bays on the peninsula. Ahipara Bay, the southernmost part of Ninety Mile Beach, is five kilometres west of the town.
The main industries of the town are forestry and tourism. The town has a population of 5,202 (2006 census) which makes it second largest in the FNDC area, behind Kerikeri.
The name Kaitaia means plenty of food (Kai being the Maori word for food).
The Kaitaia Mission Station was first established in 1834 by the missionaries Joseph Matthews and William Gilbert Puckey.
Kaitaia has an oceanic, subtropical climate. On average, it is the warmest place in New Zealand.
In the mid-1980s, a large meteorological observatory was built on the hill behind Kaitaia providing surface observations and upper air radar and radiosonde measurements. However, with the change in government policies at this time, especially the impact of Rogernomics, the full potential of the observatory was never realised and it was closed in the late 1990s. The upper air component of the observatory was moved to the Whenuapai Air Base, northwest of Auckland.[citation needed]

Kamo, New Zealand
Kamo is a small township north of Whangarei, approximately five minutes drive from the Whangarei CBD. The name is a Māori word meaning "eyelash", but has also been said to mean "to bubble up", referring to hot springs in the area. Mount Parakiore is a volcanic dome rising 391 m to the northwest of the town. It is about one million years old, and part of the Harbour Fault which also includes Mount Hikurangi near Hikurangi, and Parahaki in Whangarei.
The population was 6,312 in the 2006 Census, an increase of 297 from 2001.
Coal mining was an early industry in the area. Tunnelling first started in 1875, but it was not practical to carry the coal over the unmetalled roads to Whangarei wharf. In 1882 a short railway line was completed between Kamo and Whangarei to carry the coal. This was one of Northland's first railways. The railway still exists as part of the North Auckland Line. The mine closed in 1955, with the seams worked out.Limonite was also quarried at Kamo.
A Wesleyan church was built in 1881, the Anglican All Saints Church in 1886, and a Presbyterian church in 1911. The first Roman Catholic church in the Whangarei area opened in Kamo about 1881.

Marsden Point
Marsden Point is a head of the Whangarei Harbour, near Whangarei, New Zealand, lying close to the northern tip of Bream Bay. It is also a major industrial area, containing Marsden Point Oil Refinery, the country's only such facility, and two large defunct power plant stations (Marsden A and Marsden B). Marsden Bay is immediately to the west of Marsden Point.
Since the 1970s, there have been proposals to expand the harbour facilities and build the Marsden Point Branch, a branch line railway from the North Auckland Line to serve Marsden Point's current economic interests as well as a proposed deepwater harbour. As of 2007, land acquisition to establish a corridor for the line is under way. The associated harbour (which would also require substantial investment into new container cranes) is being proposed as an alternative to smaller facilities throughout New Zealand. According to the Marsden Point backers, these should be rationalised into fewer, more cost-effective hub ports. In comparison with, for example, Ports of Auckland in its constrained Auckland CBD location, the Marsden Point port would also have much free land for expansion.

Morocco
Morocco (Arabic: المغرب al-Maghrib ; Berber: ⵍⵎⴻⵖⵔⵉⴱ / ⴰⵎⴻⵔⵔⵓⴽElmeɣrib / Amerruk), officially the Kingdom of Morocco, is a country located in North Africa. It has a population of about 32 million and an area of 710,850 km², including the disputed region of the Western Sahara, seen by and mostly administered by Morocco as the Southern Provinces. Morocco is part of the Maghreb region, in addition to Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania, and Libya, with which it shares cultural, historical and linguistic ties.
Morocco is a constitutional monarchy with an elected parliament. The King of Morocco holds vast executive powers, including the power to dissolve the parliament. Executive power is exercised by the government but more importantly by the king himself. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of parliament, the Assembly of Representatives and the Assembly of Councillors. The king can also issue decrees called dahirs which have the force of law. The latest Parliamentary elections were held in November 25, 2011, and were considered by some neutral observers to be mostly free and fair. Voter turnout in these elections was estimated to be 43% of registered voters, but only about 25% of Moroccan adult citizens actually voted. The rest either chose not to vote or they were not registered as voters. The political capital is Rabat, but the largest city is Casablanca; other main cities include Marrakesh, Tetouan, Tangier, Salé, Fes, Agadir, Meknes, Oujda, Kenitra, and Nador.

Motu Matakohe
Motu Matakohe, also known as Matakohe or Limestone Island, is a 37 ha (100 acre) island in the upper reaches of Whangarei Harbour, just off Onerahi, a seaside suburb of the city of Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand. Used for farming and industry for many years, the island is an example of ecological island restoration by a volunteer community group.
The earliest known inhabitants of the island were Ngaitahuhu Māori who occupied it in the early 18th century. They were dispossessed and driven out of the Whangarei area in the mid 18th century by Ngāpuhi Māori led by Te Ponaharakeke.
The first European house on the island was built in 1832, though later destroyed. In 1848 the island was leased from the Parawhau hapū by Robert Carruth and Mathew Whitelaw who established a limeworks there, using the local limestone. In 1865 the island was purchased by Henry Walton from Te Tirarau and the Parawahau chiefs. The limeworks were extended and sheep were farmed. In 1881 the first batch of Portland cement was produced, with the limeworks becoming a major local industry employing 270 people at its peak in the early 20th century. The island was later purchased by the Northland Harbour Board and used as pasture for several decades. In 1989 it was given to the Whangarei District, following which the first conservation and rehabilitation work began.

New Zealand

Northland Region
The Northland Region' (Māori: Te Tai-tokerau, also Te Hiku-o-te-Ika, 'the Tail of the Fish (of Maui)), one of the 16 regions of New Zealand, is, as the name suggests, the northernmost of New Zealand's administrative regions. The main centre is the city of Whangarei.
Northland is located in what is often referred to by New Zealanders as the Far North, or, because of its mild climate, The Winterless North. It occupies the upper 80% of the 285 kilometre-long North Auckland Peninsula, the southernmost part of which is in the Auckland Region.
Stretching from a narrowing of the peninsula close to the town of Wellsford, Northland extends north to the tip of the North Auckland Peninsula, covering an area of 13,940 km², a little over five per cent of the country's total area. It is bounded to the west by the Tasman Sea, and to the east by the Pacific Ocean. The land is predominantly rolling hill country. Farming and forestry occupy over half of the land, and are two of the region's main industries.

Onerahi
Onerahi is a seaside suburb of Whangarei, New Zealand's northern most city. It is the city's only seaside suburb . It is located 9 km south-east of the centre of Whangarei, and follows the Whangarei harbour coastline until it meets the Pacific Ocean.
The population was 2,100 in the 2006 Census, an increase of 96 from 2001.
The suburb's main feature is Whangarei Airport, located on the large flat area at the southern end of the suburb.
There are two concentric roads around the seaward plateau; the upper one surrounds the airport, and the lower follows the coast.
Close to the suburb in the harbour is Motu Matakohe or Limestone Island, now being managed to restore its ecosystems.
The land for the town was purchased by Henry Walton and William Smellie Graham from Te Tirarau in the mid 1860s. It was then called Kaiwaka Point, but they renamed it Grahamtown. In 1912 it was renamed again to Onerahi to prevent a conflict with Grahamstown in the Coromandel.
From 1911 to 1933, Onerahi was also served by a branch line railway from the North Auckland Line known as the Onerahi Branch. It was built to provide access to a wharf in Onerahi, and when coastal shipping declined severely in the 1930s, the railway was closed. Part of its formation has been retained as a walking track.

Portland, Northland
Portland is a locality on the western side of Whangarei Harbour in Northland, New Zealand. Whangarei is about 10 km to the north. Tikorangi is a hill to the west with a summit 161 m above sea level.
The population of the Otaika-Portland area was 993 in the 2006 Census, an increase of 18 from 2001.
The major industry is Portland Cement, which is New Zealand's largest cement manufacturer. It has a specialised loading dock on the harbour, and quarries Tikorangi for lime.
The Portland Cement Works, which started on Limestone Island in Whangarei Harbour in 1885, moved to Portland in 1916. The Cement works is now owned by Golden Bay Cement, a division of Fletcher Building.
Historically, the town had a train station on the North Auckland Line.

Tangier
Tangier, also Tangiers (Berber: Tanja, ⵜⴰⵏⵊⴰ, archaic Berber name: Tingi, Arabic: طنجة Ṭanjah, Spanish: Tánger, French: Tanger), is a city in northern Morocco with a population of about 700,000 (2012 estimates). It lies on the North African coast at the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Spartel. It is the capital of the Tangier-Tetouan Region and of the Tangier-Asilah prefecture of Morocco.
The history of Tangier is very rich due to the historical presence of many civilizations and cultures starting from the 5th century BC. Between the period of being a Berber settlement and then a Phoenician town to the independence era around the 1950s, Tangier was a refuge for many cultures. In 1923, Tangier was considered as an international status by foreign colonial powers, and became a destination for many European and American diplomats, spies, writers and businessmen.
The city is currently undergoing rapid development and modernization. Projects include new 5-star hotels along the bay, a modern business district called Tangier City Center, a new airport terminal and a new football stadium. Tangier's economy is also set to benefit greatly from the new Tanger-Med port.

Whangarei
Whangarei (/ˌfɒŋəˈreɪ/; Māori: [faŋaˈɾɛi]) is the northernmost city in New Zealand and the regional capital of Northland Region. Although commonly classified as a city, it is officially part of the Whangarei District, administered by the Whangarei District Council a local body created in 1989 to administer both the city proper and its hinterland. The population was estimated to be 52,200 at the June 2011 estimate, up from 47,400 in 2001.
The Whangarei urban area includes the suburbs of Kamo, Tikipunga, Otangarei, Mairtown, Riverside, Sherwood Rise, Onerahi, Morningside, Raumanga, Parihaka, Maunu, Horahora, Woodhill, Vinetown, The Regent, Kensington, and Whau Valley.
Captain James Cook and the crew of the Endeavour were the first Europeans to contemplate the Whangarei Harbour entrance. On 15 November 1769 they caught about one hundred fish there which they classified as 'bream' (probably snapper) prompting Cook to name the area Bream Bay.
The Māori iwi Ngāpuhi occupied Whangarei from the early 19th century, and the Te Parawhau hapū lived at the head of the harbour. In the 1820s the area was repeatedly attacked by Waikato and Ngāti Paoa raiders during the Musket Wars.

Whangarei District
The Whangarei District is located in Northland, New Zealand. Whangarei is the principal town and the district seat. Other towns include Hukerenui, Hikurangi, Titoki, Ruakaka and Waipu. The district contains a large amount of rural land, including beaches such as Ngunguru, game fishing mecca Tutukaka, a variety of beaches along Whangarei Harbour, as well as Matakohe or Limestone Island in the Harbour, now subject to ecological restoration. The main airport for the district is Whangarei Airport.
The district extends as far south as Bream Bay, north towards the Cape Brett Peninsula, and west almost to Waipoua Forest. It also includes the Hen and Chicken Islands and the Poor Knights Islands. The mayor of Whangarei District is Morris Cutforth who has held the position since 2010, after defeating incumbent Stan Semenoff in the local body elections.
The district population is 80,500 from the June 2011 estimate.

Whau Valley
Whau Valley is a suburb of Whangarei, in Northland Region, New Zealand. State Highway 1 runs through it. The valley was named for the whau trees which grew there in the 1850s.
The population was 2,745 in the 2006 Census, an increase of 81 from 2001.
At the end of the 4 km long Whau Valley Road is the principal water reservoir for Whangarei City, created by the Whau Valley Earth Dam. The reservoir is stocked with rainbow and brown trout.
Some of the early settlers in what was then called Whauwhau Valley were William Hawken and his family, who arrived in 1859, and John MacDonald and his family, in 1860. The MacDonald family was part of the group of people from Nova Scotia who settled in the Whangarei area.
Coal was discovered in the Whauwhau Valley in the 1860s. Henry Walton and William Grahame took a 99 lease on the land and developed a mine. A wooden tramway was built from the mine to the Hatea River so coal wagons could be pulled by horses to be loaded onto ships. The railway line between Kamo and Whangarei, opened in 1882, replaced the tramway. Output of the mine was 45,359 long tons (46,087 t) by 1885.

Adam Blair
Adam Blair (born 23 March 1986 in Whangarei, Northland) is a New Zealand professional rugby league footballer currently contracted to the Wests Tigers of the National Rugby League. A New Zealand international representative forward, Blair spent six seasons with the Storm, winning the 2009 NRL Grand Final with them. He also played for them in the 2006 NRL Grand Final and was a member of the New Zealand Kiwis side that won the 2008 World Cup.
Of Māori heritage, Blair was born in Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand. He was recruited by the Melbourne Storm as a 16-year-old while attending Whangarei Boys High School. Blair was a Junior Kiwi in 2002 and 2003. He also played for the Storm's feeder team, Norths Devils in the Queensland Cup.
After debuting in the 2006 NRL season, he was selected to play from the interchange bench in the 2006 NRL Grand Final which Melbourne lost to Brisbane. He was also named the Storm's rookie of the year.
On 14 October 2006 Blair made his test debut against Australia at Mt Smart Stadium in the 2006 Tri-Nations. In August 2008, Blair was named in the New Zealand squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. Blair scored his first-ever NRL try against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in the Storm's grand final-qualifying final win of 2008. During the 2008 Rugby League World Cup He was named man-of-the-match in New Zealand's win against Papua New Guinea in the pool stage. Blair scored the last try in the Kiwis' World Cup final victory over the Kangaroos.

James Cook
Captain James Cook, FRS, RN (7 November 1728 – 14 February 1779) was a British explorer, navigator and cartographer who ultimately rose to the rank of captain in the Royal Navy. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, as well as the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand.
Cook joined the British merchant navy as a teenager and joined the Royal Navy in 1755. He saw action in the Seven Years' War, and subsequently surveyed and mapped much of the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River during the siege of Quebec. This helped bring Cook to the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society. This notice came at a crucial moment in both Cook's career and the direction of British overseas exploration, and led to his commission in 1766 as commander of HM Bark Endeavour for the first of three Pacific voyages.
In three voyages Cook sailed thousands of miles across largely uncharted areas of the globe. He mapped lands from New Zealand to Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean in greater detail and on a scale not previously achieved. As he progressed on his voyages of discovery he surveyed and named features, and recorded islands and coastlines on European maps for the first time. He displayed a combination of seamanship, superior surveying and cartographic skills, physical courage and an ability to lead men in adverse conditions.

Keith Urban
Keith Lionel Urban (born 26 October 1967) is a Australian country music singer, songwriter and guitarist whose commercial success has been mainly in the United States and Australia. Urban was born in New Zealand and began his career in Australia at an early age. In 1991, he released a self-titled debut album, and charted four singles in Australia before moving to the United States in 1992. Eventually, Urban found work as a session guitarist before starting a band known as The Ranch, which recorded one studio album on Capitol Records and charted two singles on the Billboard country charts.
Still signed to Capitol, he made his solo American debut in 1999 with the album Keith Urban. Certified platinum in the U.S., it also produced his first American Number One in "But for the Grace of God". His breakthrough hit was the Number One "Somebody Like You", from his second Capitol album Golden Road (2002). This album also earned Urban his first Grammy Award win for "You'll Think of Me", its fourth single and the fourth Billboard Number One of his career. 2004's Be Here, his third American album, produced three more Number Ones, and became his highest-selling album, earning 4× Multi-Platinum certification. Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing was released in 2006, producing the record-setting No.17 country chart debut of "Once in a Lifetime", as well as Urban's second Grammy for the song "Stupid Boy", while a Greatest Hits package entitled Greatest Hits: 18 Kids followed in late 2007. This album was re-released a year later as Greatest Hits: 19 Kids with one track added: the number one "You Look Good in My Shirt", which he had previously recorded on Golden Road. Additional albums Defying Gravity and Get Closer were released on 31 March 2009 and 16 November 2010, respectively.

Laura Dekker
Laura Dekker (born 20 September 1995) is a Dutch sailor. In 2009, she announced her plan to become the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe single-handed. A Dutch court stepped in, due to the objections of the local authorities, and prevented Dekker from departing while under shared custody of both her parents. In July 2010, a Dutch family court ended this custody arrangement, and the record breaking attempt finally began on 21 August 2010. Dekker successfully completed the solo circumnavigation in an 11.5-metre (38 ft) two-masted ketch, arriving in Simpson Bay,Sint Maarten, on 21 January 2012.
Dekker was born on a boat in the port of Whangarei, New Zealand during a seven-year trip by her parents. Her father, Dick Dekker, is Dutch and her mother, Babs Müller, is German; thus, Dekker has Dutch, German, and New Zealand citizenship. Her parents divorced in 2002.
Dekker spent the first four years of her life at sea. At six, Dekker owned her first boat, an Optimist, and learned to sail it herself. The next boat she received at the age of ten was a Hurley 700. She named it Guppy and used it for solo-sailing during her multiweek-long summer vacations; her trips included the Wadden Sea and the North Sea. In May 2009, Dekker made a solo-crossing from Maurik, Netherlands to Lowestoft, England where local authorities requested her father to come and accompany her on her return voyage.

Musket Wars
The Musket Wars were a series of five hundred or more battles fought in New Zealand amongst Māori between 1807 and 1842, after Māori obtained muskets.
Northern tribes such as the rivals Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Whātua were the first to obtain firearms, and inflicted heavy casualties upon each other and on neighbouring tribes, some of whom had never seen muskets. The wars were characterised by their brutality and ruthlessness – with treachery, the burning of villages, killing of prisoners, torture, slavery, and cannibalism being commonplace.
Hongi Hika, who was later to lead Ngāpuhi raids across most of the northern North Island, saw two of his brothers killed in this debacle.
Hongi Hika actively sought muskets and other technology from the west. In 1814, as leader of the Ngāpuhi, Hongi went to Sydney and encouraged missionaries to establish themselves on his land. He went to England in March 1820 with the missionary Kendall. Here he met many people including at Cambridge the French adventurer Baron de Theirry with whom he completed a land for guns transaction. With the aid of a large musket based army Hongi Hika captured many slaves who were put to work producing cash crops that could be traded for muskets from passing ships. This gave the Ngāpuhi a huge advantage in subsequent wars, until other tribes also acquired muskets of their own. It is estimated that more than 18,500 Māori were killed out of a population of only about 100,000.

Suzie Muirhead
Suzie Muirhead (born Suzie Ngaire Pearce, 10 April 1975 in Whangarei, New Zealand) is a field hockey defender who was a member of the New Zealand team which finished sixth at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She also competed with The Black Sticks at the 1998 and the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, where the team also finished sixth. Muirhead is New Zealand's highest capped Women's player and was awarded the Hockey New Zealand Player of the Year in 2002. She has played in two Olympics, two Commonwealth Games, two World Hockey Cups and four Champions Trophy's.

Tim Southee
Timothy Grant Southee (born 11 December 1988) is a New Zealand cricketer. He is a right-arm fast-medium bowler and hard-hitting lower order batsman. He was one New Zealand's youngest cricketers, debuting at 19 years old. He plays for Northern Districts in the State Championship and Northland in the Hawke Cup.
He was the third-highest wicket-taker at the 2011 ICC World Cup.
Southee was born in Whangarei, New Zealand, and grew up in Northland. He was educated at Whangarei Boys' High School and made his first-class debut for Northern Districts on 19 February 2007 at the age of eighteen, having already played an Under-19 ICC World Cup for New Zealand. He lives on a sheep farm in Whangarei with his family.
Southee played under-19 cricket for New Zealand from 2006-2009. His under-19 career included 13 one-day matches - 10 at ICC Under-19 World Cups - and a drawn three-match Youth Test series against India in early 2007. His last youth appearance was at the 2008 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he was player of the tournament.

Winston Peters
Winston Raymond Peters (born 11 April 1945) is a New Zealand politician and leader of New Zealand First, a political party he founded in 1993. Peters has had a successful and turbulent political career since entering Parliament in 1978, first serving as a Cabinet Minister in the Bolger Government before being sacked in 1991. As leader of New Zealand First, he held the balance of power after the 1996 election and formed a coalition with National, securing the positions of Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer. However, the coalition dissolved in 1998 following the replacement of Bolger by Jenny Shipley as Prime Minister.
In 1999 New Zealand First returned to Opposition before entering into a government again with the Labour Party in 2005, in which he served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. On 29 August 2008 he stood down as a Minister pending a police investigation into a funding scandal involving Peters and New Zealand First.
In the 2008 general election, New Zealand First failed to reach the five percent threshold and Peters did not regain his seat. As a result, neither Peters or New Zealand First were returned to Parliament. However, in the 2011 general election New Zealand First experienced a resurgence in support, winning 6.59 percent of the party vote to secure eight seats in Parliament.

Whangarei (/ˌfɒŋəˈreɪ/; Māori: [faŋaˈɾɛi]) is the northernmost city in New Zealand and the regional capital of Northland Region. Although commonly classified as a city, it is officially part of the Whangarei District, administered by the Whangarei District Council a local body created in 1989 to administer both the city proper and its hinterland. The population was estimated to be 52,200 at the June 2011 estimate,[1] up from 47,400 in 2001.
The Whangarei urban area includes the suburbs of Kamo, Tikipunga, Otangarei, Mairtown, Riverside, Sherwood Rise, Onerahi, Morningside, Raumanga, Parihaka, Maunu, Horahora, Woodhill, Vinetown, The Regent, Kensington, and Whau Valley.

Captain James Cook and the crew of the Endeavour were the first Europeans to contemplate the Whangarei Harbour entrance. On 15 November 1769 they caught about one hundred fish there which they classified as 'bream' (probably snapper) prompting Cook to name the area Bream Bay.[2]
The Māori iwi Ngāpuhi occupied Whangarei from the early 19th century, and the Te Parawhau hapū lived at the head of the harbour. In the 1820s the area was repeatedly attacked by Waikato and Ngāti Paoa raiders during the Musket Wars.[3]
The first European settler was William Carruth, a Scotsman and trader who arrived in 1839 and was joined, six years later, by Gilbert Mair and his family. For the most part, relations between the settlers and local Māori were friendly, but in February 1842, all settler farms were plundered in revenge for transgressions of tapu. In April 1845, during the Flagstaff War, all settlers fled from Whangarei.[4] Most of the original settlers never returned, but by the mid 1850s there were a number of farmers and orchardists in the area. From 1855, a small town developed, driven by the kauri gum trade. Today's 'Town Basin' on the Hātea River was the original port and early exports included kauri gum and native timber followed later by coal from Whau Valley, Kamo and Hikurangi. Coal from the Kiripaka field was exported via the Ngunguru River. By 1864, the nucleus of the present city was established.[5]
Fire bricks made from fire clay deposits near the Kamo mines supported a brick works over several decades. Good quality limestone was quarried at Hikurangi, Portland, and Limestone Island, and initially sold as agricultural lime and later combined with local coal to produce Portland cement at the settlement of Portland on the south side of the harbour. Local limestone is still used in cement manufacture but the coal is now imported from the West Coast of the South Island.
Whangarei was the most urbanised area in Northland towards the end of the 19th century, but grew slowly in the 20th century. The district slowly exhausted most of its natural resources but was sustained by agriculture, especially dairying. Shipping was the main transport link until the North Auckland railway line reached the town in 1925, and the road from Auckland was not suitable for travel in poor weather until 1934.[6] These terrestrial travel routes forced a rapid decline in coastal shipping but stimulated Whangarei to become the service centre for Northland. The population was 14,000 in 1945, but grew rapidly in the 1960s, incorporating Kamo and other outlying areas. In 1965, Whangarei was declared a city. Its population the following year was 31,000.[7]
The second half of the twentieth century brought the establishment and expansion of the oil refinery at Marsden Point on Bream Bay and the adjacent development of timber processing. A container port could follow, linked by rail to Auckland.[8]

Mount Parihaka[link]
Mt Parihaka is a volcanic dome rising 241 m to the northeast of the city centre. It is about 20 million years old, and part of the Harbour Fault which also includes Parakiore near Kamo, and Hikurangi near the town of the same name.[9] The dome is surrounded by the Parihaka Scenic Reserve. There is road access to the summit of Parihaka, and walking tracks through the reserve.[10]
The dome is frequently called Mount Parahaki, but the original Māori spelling of Parihaka was confirmed by the government in 2005.[11]
Hātea River[link]

The Hātea River flows south through the city and empties into Whangarei Harbour. The river has a spectacular 26 m waterfall in Tikipunga, 6 km north of the city.[12]
Matakohe/Limestone Island[link]

Matakoe, or Limestone Island, lies in the harbour close to the city. Owned by Whangarei District, it is subject to ecological island restoration by the Friends of Matakohe/Limestone Island Society. There is public access by boat.
Climate[link]
Whangarei falls in the oceanic climate zone. Summer days occasionally exceed 30°C, and there is plentiful rainfall spread relatively evenly over the year.

Sports[link]
The Northland rugby league team are a rugby league team that represents the Northland Region in New Zealand Rugby League competitions. They are based in Whangarei. They currently compete in the Albert Baskerville Trophy as the Northern Swords. Between 2006 and 2007 they were part of the Bartercard Cup, playing under the name the Northern Storm. Northland was originally known as North Auckland and has previously used the nickname the Wild Boars.
Whangarei is home to the Northland rugby union team, a professional side competing in the ITM Cup, the highest level of provincial rugby in New Zealand. They play out of Okara Park, the largest stadium in the region, which is also hosting two matches during Rugby World Cup 2011.
The football (soccer) club North Force who compete in the Lotto Sport Italia NRFL Division 1 are based in Whangarei.
Whangarei also has an excellent Field Hockey facility, often hosting international matches between the New Zealand Black Sticks and various international opposition.
Northland is also represented at the highest national domestic level in Golf and Field Hockey. Northland has had reasonable success in field hockey of late, with several players from Northland being selected for the Black Sticks.

Whangarei Boys' High School is a boys' secondary school with a roll of 1060.[14] Whangarei Girls' High School is a girls' secondary school with a roll of 1127.[15] These two secondary schools have a decile rating of 5 and cover years 9-13. Both schools opened in 1881.[16][17]
Pompallier Catholic College (opened in 1971) is a Catholic state integrated co-educational secondary school (years 7 to 13) with a roll of 560 and a decile ranking of 7.
Whangarei Intermediate is an intermediate (years 7-8) school with a roll of 639.[18] Whangarei School is a contributing primary (years 1-6) school with a roll of 577.[19]
Blomfield Special School and Resource Centre provides education and care to students between the ages of five and twenty-one years,[20] and has a roll of 68.[21] The school operates from five locations, four in Whangarei and one in Kaitaia.[22]
Christian Renewal School is a composite (years 1-15) school with a roll of 151.[23] The school was established in 1993 and integrated into the state system in 1997. The school operates in the Christian Renewal Church buildings.[24]
These four schools are all coeducational, and all have a decile rating of 4 except for the Christian Renewal School, which has a decile of 5.
Whangarei also has a technical institution, NorthTec, with a comprehensive range of programs from certificate to degree level. The student body of NorthTec consists of around 23,000 students studying either part-time and full-time. The main campus is located in the suburb of Raumanga.
